Ring a Bell for me
So I was thinking of getting a new laptop to replace my current Dell Inspiron 6400 (nothing really all that wrong, just old) and was looking at getting an Asus M50Vm. I don't have much experience with Asus laptops, but everything else I've ever used for PC has been Asus (been through 3 Asus rigs by now).

I was wondering if anyone had/has an Asus notebook, and what you think of them as far as build, reliability and what not. Just wanna make sure I do my research before sinking so many bones.

I've got one, which I use with Linux. It's never given me any issues at all.

I have the V1s. It's pretty good. I've had it for a year. Nice build quality. Poor battery life.

Uhm, pretty sure a stick of RAM is dying tho. Good thing they have 3 year warranty for this model >.>

It's nice that most of their models have 2 or more years of warranty attached to them.

Oh, if you do order one, I recommend

EDIT: Apparently, they came out with notebooks recently with more than decent battery life. I'm surprised.

Well, lets see... of the three Asus laptops me and my brother have bought:

1st A6T (my machine) broke after about 6 months, after three or so months in repair it was replaced with another machine. (not the same model, a slightly better machine with more HD space for instance). It's still working great, knock on wood.

2nd A6T (my brothers, bwahahaha... just joking) has broken down three times and been sent in as many times. Since the last repair it's not been working correctly and is being sent in for the fourth time tomorrow. Hopefully for the last time.

Another Asus laptop, no idea what model, broke a few days after it arrived. The HD died. It was in repair for less than a month, probably no more than two weeks or something and has been working since then.

Now, if I were to buy another laptop in the future I'd still go with Asus. Fact is they have two years warranty and takes care of picking up and shipping the laptop if it breaks. A bad HD can happen to anyone at any time really, and as for our seriously abysmal track record with the A6T model, something must have been fucked up in the production run since both machines had the same sort of issues from the get go, I was just lucky enough to get a new machine instead of the old one back.

Sister in law has had a W7 for two years. Aside from one of the keys coming off (put it right back), no issues.

Wife has had a W5F for 2.5-3 years. One of the memory modules failed a few months ago and I replaced it for $25.00. She had an S1 that lasted her like, 5-6 years from when she started college. Still worked fine (although a bit slow and some of the external materials were starting to wear).

Otherwise, been working fine; great laptops.

If I were to get a new machine today? I'd go for a Dell. I don't think Asus has a 14" notebook capable of supporting 8 GB RAM do they?

I have the G50V-A1.

Currently playing WoW in windowed mode, and watching UFC online.
- 60 fps constant.

Never gets hot. I love my Asus ;)

I have an Asus EEE1000H.

I'm not sure what to say about it other than the build quality is spectacular. It's a very refined little machine.

I have an ASUS S5N that I've been using heavily for almost five years. I've replaced the keyboard three times when keys broke off or stuck, the hard drive once when I started getting BSODs, and the fan/heat sink once when it started making noise and running hot. All the parts were cheap, easy to obtain and easy to install. The thing runs with incredible efficiency, it weighs only 3 pounds and the battery life is just shy of 3 hours even after all this time.

I've got a Asus W3J you mother lovers!!!! WOO WOOO!!!!

The best thing about this baby is that it's easy as pie to upgrade.. I put in a 200gb hdd, another 1gb of ram and a C2D cpu and I don't know jack about computer hardware =]

(upgraded from core duo process, 1gb of ram and 100gb hdd)

I've also got 2 batteries in this thing, got over 4hrs of battery time (a 9cell and a 6 cell in the hotswap bay)

it's light, it's durable, and it can play games woo! i love my w3j !!! :D:D:D

(bought it 2.5years ago) never had a SINGLE issue. WOOOO!

I'm using an A8JS, and it's had a few issues.

Biggest one at the moment is a huge crack around the lower left-hand corner of the monitor, and also right through the left-hand hinge. Every time I open or close it, it makes horrible snapping noises. A few bits of plastic have even come out.

For the record, I've been really careful with it - it's just that opening and closing the lid seems to cause the lid to open up along its seam. All of the damage seems to be radiating from that left-hand corner of the lid.

It also won't multi-screen without kicking up a huge fuss every time you plug or unplug it, and it has a very short battery life. Oh, and the shitty touch pad thing is shitty. It's a work machine, and I'm actually tempted to go out and buy a different laptop with my own money to use at work instead of this one.

I liked it for a while - it's a nice design, and pretty powerful. But less than a year in, it's gotten really slow and busted. For the record, I look after my PCs pretty well - I've never gone through one this fast before.
