I just dont see the point playing f2p. They rely on lies. At the beginning they seem fair and cool but when you get hooked the problems start, suddenly asking you way more, with expensive items impossible to buy without grinding, or even needing real money. I just advice to premium gamers that long for premium games to not even download them, 1 download gives them more exposure and money, and the ads give those developers money too. We should stop giving them money at all costs or the future of the industry is in mortal danger. Stop downloading any free game. Lets go back to paid gaming. Please.

Had a similar experience at first but I stuck with it. It's of course not a game you play constantly unless you fork out some $. That said I had no trouble saving up premium gems for a third builders hut. I also started out upgrading my resource gathering buildings to max before anything else and now I got currency raining in allowing me to upgrade other things easily.
How have you managed to gain enough gems for a third hut? I've currently got around 200 gems, and seem around the same level as you.

I have my Guild Hall now, so can start a NeoGAF guild if others are interested.

I find the problem with F2P games is that they're just not very good, by and large. Far too shallow and bitty for me to really get into.

I feel the same way. Shallow. But that because they hinder the gameplay with all the f2p trappings they hide within or while they design it. So in return we get like one third of the game it was originally and really shallow in terms of fun. EA, Gameloft, PikPok, Zynga, Rovio... experts at milking the cow and removing the fun from games. I prefer a good indie game any day.

And getting back to that, if you like premium games, tired of IAP and f2p, stop downloading games just to see how they are. Do not even download them, do not play them, and if you do, remove them from your device as soon as possible and rate it 1 star on iTunes. All that counts for chart visibility. Ads gives them money, visibility gives them money. I say stop to that.

In what way? What are you trying to teach your kids about computer games?

The same thing I try to teach them when I read them spot books instead of Tolstoy, nothing.

They just have some fun, it costs nothing and when they are ready for something deeper they move on to it.

Come on now, let's not get carried away here

What should always come first is fun, at least IMO. Free or not, IAP or not, if a game is fun, it's worth a try. Maybe not a lasting spot on your device, but a fun game is always worth playing. PikPok's The Maze Runner is a great lane runner that I almost overlooked. Sky Force is one of the best shmups on IOS. Folt is an excellent minimalist puzzle game. Quadrous Rampage, Arcane Soul, Tower of Fortune, Grooh, Robotek, Deep Loot, Reaper are examples of great free games with IAP

Let's not let F2P cloud our judgement on what makes a game enjoyable or not. Do you know many great games I would have passed by if my critieria for dismissing a game was "Oh, free and IAP? Not even going to try that"

Edit: Super Scrapped Robot, Bill Killem, Callys Cave 2, Casuality, Jupiter Jump, Wind Up Knight 2, LightGlide, Blackmoor, Maximus, PILE, Yukon Warrior, Megatroid, Sound Ride, Zombie Kill of the Week, Smash Bandits, Asphalt 8

Yeah, there's a big difference between "f2p" and these shitty tap tap farm whatever world building games. I always get sucked in initially, be it because it's got a Simpsons or Jurassic Park skin, because they have a particular gloss of paint, promise of exciting new gameplay or have social/battling elements. They are all monumentally shit, and yet I never learn. Plunder Pirates certainly looks great, but it is just more of the same wait-15-minutes-before-you-can-actually-do-anything bullshit.

Yes, I get carried away. Just thinking about the damage done by King.com or Gameloft get on my nerves. But you are right, I will try to be more tolerant with free games, try to separate free from f2p. I guess not every free game will tries to milk all my money. Will download some of those to see...

Now I know I finally hit the big time.

On iOS I think you are the biggest publisher after all the larger ones (AAA studios). Thinking why I included you on the list... I remembered Super Monsters Ate My Condo or Giant Boulder of Death. Extremely good iOS games hindered by f2p. Never tried anything else ever since. Sorry.

You're thinking Adult Swim, not PikPok. PikPok are the devs of Into The Dead

PikPok makes a lot of games that are a ton of fun. Definitely one of my favorite devs on iOS, especially Into the Dead. I think it's mostly with their games that get published by Adult Swim that I feel get hindered -- not ruined -- by common F2P elements.

I dream of the day when sites like TouchArcade implement a rating system to accompany a game's score if it's F2P, based on how gross it is. So, for example, if I gave Into the Dead a 5/5, I could also rate it 4/5 or 5/5 on the F2P grossness scale because the IAPs are completely optional, and there aren't any energy timers. Or maybe it should be 1/5 because it's not gross. In that case, a game like Clash of Clans would get a 3/5 or 4/5. And Spider-Man Unlimited would get a 4/5 or 5/5 because it does have an energy mechanic, the "use premium currency to revive" button is placed just about where you'd tap it by mistake too often, and you eventually need the premium currency to progress. This is probably why such a rating system doesn't exist...

people with 6/6+, how do the graphics heavy games run on those?

Asphalt 8 and modern combat 5 are the games that struggle the most on my ipad mini retina.

I tried Asphalt 8 on the 6+ and the only obvious issue was at the start of the race there was a bit of stuttering (like maybe a couple seconds of frame-loss), but then it otherwise ran fine.

Looks good on the bigger screen.

Braveheart Legacy looks/runs well, but that isn't exactly a heavy graphics game.

That Defenders iOS game seems to run well, although I don't like it all that much for a TD game.

Downloaded XCOM again to see how it looked and it was better looking than I remembered, seems like they added some fidelity to the player models since I last checked it out a few months ago.

Very interested in that Vain Glory game coming out since it's using Metal and I think a MOBA on mobile could be great if done right.

Still looking for something a bit meatier to play on the train...debating grabbing the FF Bundle, but I don't know if I'm looking for something THAT meaty.

Anandtech has some preliminary benchmarks that shows the bigger res on the plus making quite a difference to performance.

Now, of course it remains to be seen how many games will run at native resolution on the plus anyway.

Getting iPad 3 vibes from these numbers.

There is certainly a very steep learning curve in making F2P work, not to mention the landscape is constantly changing.

That being said, the App Store is a harsh mistress no matter which product model you pursue.

It is certainly difficult to succeed in the F2P market. What pisses me off though is that Fishlabs was doing really well as a premium title developer, and I was looking forward to seeing their next game. But instead of pouring their money and effort into creating a true Galaxy on Fire successor, they created that awful f2p game

Into the Dead is fun, but PikPok had some really great stuff on the beginning, with Monster Flip and Monsters Ate My Condo. MAMC is, for me, one of the greatest games of all time. Any platform, any era. Of all time. Unfortunately MAMC is not compatible with the iPhone 5 resolution and I cant play it anymore.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Think I might get a regular 6 instead, as I'm a bit of a performance nut.

Having owned an iPad 3 I'm starting to worry about the performance of the Plus in 2 years when it's running iOS 10. Will probably go with the 6 now.

Downloaded Dragon Quest VIII on my new iPhone 6... man what a waste of money. This game runs like garbage. I think it's been hard coded to run at a locked 15 fps or something. Terrible experience.

Sorry to hear, sort of the reason I never picked it up. If you had read a little you'd have seen that before purchasing. It was extremely well documented and mentioned often... though I guess the whole iPhone 6 was a bit of a wild card (however Anandtech's recent benchmarks don't show it performing that much better than the 5s speed-wise). I imagine you could still get a refund if you cite that as a reason (bad performance resulting in unenjoyable experience). DQIV on the other hand has no such issues and is a perfect port from a technical aspect if you want something else but still DQ.

Thank you for saving me money.

ipad 3 comparisons wouldn't make sense because the resolution is pretty much ipad resolution, and those run most stuff fine on last 2 year's chips.

I didn't know refunds were even an option. I'll give it a try.

As someone who is rather sensitive to low frame rates, this really is unplayable.

Either way, I'll certainly be more careful in the future. I guess I just didn't expect a port of an old PS2 game to give modern mobile hardware any trouble.

I have my Guild Hall now, so can start a NeoGAF guild if others are interested.

I'll join that once I, you know, figure out how to do anything.

True, it'll definitely run apps just fine. But the regular 6 will probably be more future-proof.

Question to 6 Plus owners: When you take screenshots in games, do they come out as 2208 × 1242 files like the homescreen screenshots? Is it possible for game developers to render 1080p without scaling?

Fwiw, I got the 6 and when I opened the box I initially thought they had mistakenly sent me a plus. It's huge (to me at least) and great for gaming.

I honestly can't imagine using a plus. I'm still trying to get used to the regular 6

SMAMC is F2P but it is the better game in my opinion. Wasn't particularly well balanced economy wise (in the gamers favour) so you never really need to pay either, and it doesn't have any ads.

If you haven't tried it because it was F2P but liked MAMC, then you should give it a shot.

I'll actually be interested to see this year if there is a "X" chip for the iPad (aka A8X) now that they have a phone that does iPad resolutions.

maybe. there really aren't many graphical heavy games that im interested to play these days. Gameloft game still don't run that great even on the best stuff. So im perfectly fine if a 6+ can run board games and card games decently.

Man, Goat Simulator made my iPhone 6 get crazy hot. Gonna hold off on playing it for now and see if there's some sort of update down the way.

I dunno, never spent a gem incl during the tutorial parts and saved up via quests and such. 3 builders doesn't help much though yet.

Made a NeoGAF guild earlier but I've since joined the Reddit guild, had 32/50 members. It's open to all, not sure at this point if more members = more perks.
