Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Crysis 3 still struggles to hold 60fps on my rig at 1080p.

Whats Your CPU? Game is very demanding on CPU and HT helps a lot. Grass simulation can tank performance if You dont have more than 4 cores.
Check Your GPU utilization, if its not in 99% bracket than its all because of CPU.

2500k at 4ghz. The second level where you have to run out in the open drops to mid thirties :O

That would be your pocessor CPUI limiting you (that is unless you are running High MSAA or something).

No joke, Crysis 3 in some sections is pretty hard on four threaded processors. It really likes more threads/cores.

Would it be better to get a 970 or a 780ti? lots of sales going on with the discontinued cards

Given the archictectural advantages of the 970, I would say get it instead. Being able to take advantage of its 11.2 and 1.3 dx11 support) will be nice when the time comes.

The 1 or 2% difference is unnoticable with a nice overclock.

Yeah, probably should have spent the extra 50 bucks and got the 2600k 3 years ago.

Just got my 980s installed :D

X99, 980 sli and I guess a 5820k in there. Damn.
I want to resist for 20nm, I have to!

For people in Canada, is this available anywhere yet? I see a page on TigerDirect but they still don't have on sale

I am interested to know the fan speed and temp of the card to achieve those numbers. I should have my G1 tomorrow and the anticipation is killing me.

Didn't go higher than 67 with the default fan curve. Will presumably be even lower when I put it in an Enthloo Pro.

Huge clocking headroom with this card. It's impressive.

DSR sounds delicious to my AA-hungry ears. Tired of the way modern AA techniques mean jaggies behind DoF are so common.

Guys, should I use MSI Afterburner for a custom fan curve with a 970? I think I read that recent Nvidia cards auto-overclock or something, presumably having their own built-in and optimized fan curves, so I don't want to risk over-ruling that with my own guesswork if true.

What 970 do you have? It seems all the different coolers from most manufacturers are cool and quiet enough as it is.

I bought the Zotac after seeing the lower price and reading a review that praised its cooling capabilities, recommending it over the 980. Temps are fairly important to me, because I like a quiet system =)

So if I disable Afterburner the GPU will handle the fans all by itself? I don't want to deactivate the fans altogether - very new to all this lol

Just ran a couple of benchmarks with the same fan profile I had for my last card (2GB 560 Ti) and it seems to be working beautifully with the 970. Unigine's Valley benchmark, DX11 and Ultra settings with 2xAA maintained 60fps and only passed 63 degree temps during the heavy wind and rain section. Fans were whisper quiet.

Time to test Skyrim with ENB! =D

My two Palit GTX970s have just arrived.

Very quiet blowers on stock clocks (they're the same as my old PNY 670 blowers), even when running Valley benchmark on Ultra. Max temps were around low 70s and averaging 90-110 fps throughout the whole thing.

Will install the fan controller and overclock software soon and see what happens...

Is it this card?

I have the 2500K as well, but would the extra threads in the 2600k actually help? They are not extra cores.

In some spots I can get upwards of 85-90% CPU usage on a 2600k@4.6ghz. This game is one that loves extra threads.

Grass simulation is killing Your framerate :) I have i5 2500k and it drops there too.

Thats why i'm moving to 4ghz 6c/12t with GTX 970 :)

Guess it does make a difference. Is there a way to tone down the grass? That explains why changing AA settings didn't seem to alter the framerate all that much.

Took a Crysis 3 screenshot to show CPU usage because I just arrived in the grass area. This is a 3770K@4,4

Looks like some evidence of the 2500k indeed being a bottleneck for the 970s in this particular instance.

Thx for the feedback. I knew it was OC friendly but i wasn't sure what was the cost temp and noise wise.
Sounds better and better.

Thanks for the impressions! I've been close to pulling the trigger on a Zotac for a couple of days now since they've been the only cards in stock anywhere, but wanted to make sure they didn't have any noise issues first. I've been holding out for the semi-passive MSI model, but I have no idea how long it'll be until those cards are widely available.

Great. Finally someone who bought it. Your report is relieving too, because someone else commented about the cheap build quality of the fan and how noisy it is.

Don't get me wrong, these are some crap plastic fan shrouds, but my first impression compared to the two 670s which I removed were that they were damn quiet.

No where near as loud as the fans I had on my XFX radeons.

Has anyone overclocked one of these cards far enough to reach something like 80C under full load? Or is the voltage capped too low?

The cards start throttling at 80 degrees so most people will back off their OC when they see it reaching 80.

This is the first time I've actually wanted a card close to when it's come out, so this whole thing is somewhat new to me. When the cards sell out(like they all have now), how long typically does it take them to come back?

No probs! Just tested Skyrim with an insane ENB, framerates between 45-60 (it really is incredibly intensive) and it managed to push my Zotac 970 into the low 70's. Max temp recorded was 74 degrees. I couldn't hear a thing.

I do have a Fractal case which is all about noise reduction, but I could always hear my GTX 560 Ti through the case loud and clear, with my Skyrim setup making the card run faster and louder than anything else I play. The 970 is practically silent, even at temps of 70 degrees and above. I'll be aiming to make 70 degrees my max temp as much as possible, but it's good to know how silent the card is =)

EDIT:

Tomb Raider Benchmark, everything maxed with tessellation and TressFX enabled, constant 60fps with temps peaking at 63 degrees.
Unigine Heaven Benchmark, everything maxed, constant 60 fps with temps peaking at 67 degrees.

Everything running at 1080p by the way. If, like me, you want a quiet card that can max games out at 1080p 60fps, seems like this is perfect!

Yeah, probably should have spent the extra 50 bucks and got the 2600k 3 years ago.

The price difference was usually over 100€ at release and those spots in C3 are one of the very few instances where it would've been of any use (when only looking at gaming).

With both the Xbone and PS4 sporting 8 cores I guess it makes sense to upgrade the 2500k to something with more threads then? What's the best processor I can find for my 1155?

I'd wait for a while. No doubt games making good use of 8 cores on PC will be coming, but right now there's very little that requires it. My 2600k is still beasting its way through everything. I think there are eight core CPUs available if cash is as common as toilet paper to you, but otherwise, best to wait until they're required, and until there's enough competition to bring the prices down, imo. You'll be spending an insane amount of money for a CPU no games will make use of right now.

The cores of the 2500K are still much faster. I checked last week and the best 1155 cpu is the 3770K but it still costs almost 300 bucks and you only get hyperthreading. Not worth it imo also I'm not sure if the first 1155 mainboards are compatible with Ivy Bridge, you'd need to check. Wait for the next big thing (Skylake) or until you absolutely need more performance in a game which is cpu-limited.

AMD 8core are dirt cheap though.

Aight, thanks guys. I'll wait this out a bit then. Might as well wait to upgrade my 6970, still runs most games at a good pace with nice settings (for me).
