Bayonetta 2 off to a slow start in Japan [Update: Week 2 sales]

I'm sure the latter will be true, but I can't see how many more bombs Platinum can have and still get access to the funding they need to make the games they want. People have every right to worry about their sales numbers in light of that, especially if (like me) they enjoy the studios' output.
Every game has performed below expectations except for MGR I'm fairly sure. I think they'll somehow manage to continue to get funding. Even when they were Clover they had multiple bombas, and yet they got to release 4 games in a 2 year period when they started Platinum. (Infinite Space, Mad World, and Bayonetta were all released the same year and then Vanquish came out the year after.) Korra will probably perform well for them, and they already have Scalebound under contract with MS. MGR 2 is all but confirmed as well.

Platinum's last non-Wii U game didn't bomb at all. I'm not worried about Platinum's output in the slightest for now.

Thank you WiiU userbase, for proving me right once again.

Well Japan is more attracted to handhelds now so this isn't the best example for determining the Wii U userbase's interest in B2.
Let's wait for the sales in other regions.
Not that I'm expecting the game to sell great regardless.

I certainly hope so--I LOVED Revengeance--but it's that "somehow" that bothers me.

I'm not sure what you're even asking. Just buy the game if you want to play it man.

No. Don't buy it. In fact, go buy that crazy Zelda hack'n slack game. But I'm going to buy it when it comes out.

Stop confusing me.

Does Bayonetta 2 have Mario in it? I am only allowed to buy 2 non-Mario Nintendo games a year. I would sure hate to buy this and inadvertently support bad Nintendo business decisions.

This is the company that approached Nintendo with an idea for an all-stars character action game with Nintendo characters and they walked out of the meeting getting to make a brand new IP. They'll be fine. Worst case scenario, they just go full indie and start focusing on smaller downloadable titles and maybe a big budget title every 4 or 5 years. Korra is maybe an indication of their plans in the future. Maybe we'll get a handheld exclusive game out of them. Who fucking knows.

Ask your mom.

I honestly don't care how much it sells. It was a miracle it was released to begin with. Game is glorious. I treasure Bayo 1 and now I will treasure both games.

no one should be surprised at this. the WiiU is as dead as the 3D0.
Fun fact: As dead as it may be, it's still the best selling current generation home console in Japan. And quite possibly the second best selling worldwide. Think about that for a moment.

There's a Mario type outfit I think for Bayo...if that counts at all. Besides which, you shouldn't be listening to anyone who tries to dictate your purchases or tastes bro, you should be able to be you, an individual.

Mind = blown. :)

Not sure why it matters. The low sales don't make the game any less good. Platinum Games will continue to get work and Nintendo will continue to fund games for studios. For those that are thinking it would've been some huge hit on the other platforms, they tried that shit already. The weak sales there is the reason Nintendo had to save this game in the first place. I'm sure they went into this knowing that it wouldn't light up the sales charts. And despite that, the game EXISTS. AND it's packaged with the first game for one price. Whatever their goal was in publishing this game, I could give a damn. Good shit Nintendo, thank you for the charity.
I couldn't agree more. Nintendo's support for Bayonetta 2 is a powerful statement of their values as a game company, and an extraordinary gift not just to action game fans but anyone who appreciates deep rich substantial gameplay over flashy but hollow spectacle.

a) It wouldn't have sold much better on other consoles anyway, how many Platinum games have to come out to prove this?

b) It wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Nintendo. Platinum knew it probably wouldn't sell billions, Nintendo probably knew, EVERYONE knew... yet here were are getting the game anyway. Whatever their reasons for making it are, we should be thanking Nintendo for donating a game to the 'I love Bayo I wish there was more charity'.

They saw an opportunity to give something to the hardcore audience and delivered, well done!

Buy a Wii U and have fun as a means of thanking them.

"GAWD DAMN IT WHY DIDN'T NINTENDO RELEASE THIS GAME ON MY SYSTEM OF CHOICE?"

"WII U? NO THANKS, IT HAS NO GAMES LOLOL - EXCEPT THIS ONE EXCLUSIVE GAME IT HAS I WANT THAT I'M REALLY UPSET ABOUT."

The original title sold far better in the first week (and so did Rising, I believe), but the second point still remains - it wouldn't be in existence if Nintendo hadn't stepped in. We can debate all day, but the fact remains that Bayo 2 exist because Nintendo deemed it so.

I'm not sure why some people think Nintendo is going to abandon Wii U in 2015. Nintendo's already announced that it is releasing at least 8 games for next year (not counting Fatal Frame 5, Devil's Third, Fire Emblem X SMT, or eShop titles such as Mario vs. DK). It's probably safe to say that 2015 will probably have the best software lineup for both halves of the year compared to 2013 and 2014.

Bring out the list man (and the chalkboard while your at it, I haven't seen it a while).

Those were before the death of consoles in Japan.

Lets not pretend a huge part of the appeal of Bayonetta(and Platinum games in general) isn't the flashy, hollow spectacle

Then bigger question is, why the fuck does the Wii U, the successor to one of the most popular videogame consoles every made, have an install base in Japan that is lower than the Xbox 360, one of the worst selling videogame consoles in Japan.

1) Aging population in Japan
2) Everything going handheld/mobile

The fact they took a license that has proven to be a dud and funded a sequel is a pretty good insight as to why this company is failing with their console.

I don't think there's a developer in the world who could make a Metal Gear game not sell on the two biggest console platforms + PC
I think there's an argument to be made MGR lost sales with platinum attached. I know of at least one person who didn't buy it, because they were sold on the original vision and were not fans of Platinum.

How's Hyrule Warriors doing there?

It seems like both games in all territories had/will suffer from poor marketing and Smash 3DS stealing its thunder in such a close time frame.

I think the audience for such retro/arcadey games in Japan is almost non-existent on any console but I was hoping for more sales since Japan is supposed to be the land of the killer app, meaning fans of the genre would have bought the console just to enjoy this one game.

Hopefully western sales fare a little better, atleast the RRP will keep it's price compared to other systems since most of the playerbase is accustomed to buying these type of games at bargain bin prices despite their cult status. (If this was on any other console it would be £10 bargain bin fodder within a month so launch sales are more important on other systems)

EDIT Whatever the sales I've nothing but respect for Nintendo, they've done more than enough.

If Nintendo continuing to be bad at business meant I can get a few more awesome sequels I wouldn't mind too much.

Fund God Hand 2 Nintendo. It will surely save the Wii U.

Hyrule Warriors - 78,773 first week, 114,252 LTD

Bayonetta 1 + 2 - 33,114 first week

I'm buying it next month regardless of the sales data. Take that internet!

Hunting exclusives to generate goodwill with the hardcore crowd is far from a bad thing on Nintendo's part, and if anything, they haven't been aggressive enough at it. They're failing with the Wii U for a lot of factors, but these sort of partnerships are in no way a detriment.

There are tons of parts of the games where when gameplay would normally be taken away from someone it isn't. Like when you deal the finishing blow to the last two bosses of the first Bayonetta. The flashy spectacle is an appeal, but a lot of that flashy spectacle is controlled by you.Sure, they have QTEs and stuff, but they also have some of the best designed normal encounters and boss fights in the business. The entire point of the character action genre is to feel like you're fully in control of your character and you feel an immense sense of accomplishment when you get a Pure Platinum in Bayonetta or Wonderful 101.

I still don't get the Scalebound deal. Kamiya said he wants Scalebound to have more "mass appeal" than his previous titles, but what's the point of aiming for mass appeal if you're pre-emptively dooming its sales through choice of platform?

The Bayonetta deal makes sense because it's the only way the game would've been made, and it's still catering to their hardcore fanbase (though the fans haven't followed them in very large numbers =().

*high fives*

I've got this and Hyrule Warriors pre-ordered. Amazon shipped my copy of the latter today!

So what are the odds that Nintendo will give this game some marketing in the west? Good-slim-none?

I don't know.

My hunch is that they were going to do this game some justice in regards to exposure as the buzz around the game is pretty loud(even if it's a loud minority) but hopefully this doesn't dissuade them.

They seem like they want to just put all their eggs in "one" basket ala Kart and next Smash and have DLC for them to keep them afloat.

With Hyrule Warriors and Smash coming shortly before, they'll really need to remind the public that the game is coming out if they want any chance of it selling well. It got its own Direct...almost two months before actual release. It'll be overshadowed if NoA doesn't put marketing muscle into this, and you and me know they just won't do it.
Prove me wrong, NoA....
