Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

So I found some more instances of intense coil whine on my MSI 970, even worse than before and not limited to my previous examples, so I decided to exchange it.

I live literally 4 miles from newegg, I picked the card up personally from them today, but to return it I was told I had to wait 24hrs for a shipping label, mail it back to them at a UPS box, wait a day or two for them to receive it, wait 3 business days after they receive the package for them to process the RMA, and another 5 business days for them to mail a replacement. I am not allowed to return the item myself or pick up the replacement in person.

I told them in nicer words that that was some bull so they told me it would be a better idea to process the item for a straight refund, mail it back, and just buy another one to pick up myself. It was in stock so I said okay.
Got my RMA refund authorization and went to purchase the second card. Got as far as the final authorization screen when...whoops! Item removed from your cart, out of stock. Sign up for notification!

God damn it. I dont even have a shipping box to put it in since it was never shipped to me.

The Gigabyte G1 is extremely long, pushes past the edge of my motherboard by about 2 inches.

Super long, yeah. Had to move my hdd cage around. Was too long by 2mm! I can't believe that shit.

Hey, is there any way to test for coil whine? I've been messing around in games and I haven't heard anything and I ran Kombustor at high load for 15 minutes and didn't hear any. I should be fine then right?

But the bullet and bought 2x MSI 970's. I ordered from amazon and cancelled after waiting 4 days, meaning I had to pay the extra $300 or so "Fuck you for being Australian" tax. Hoping to get it tomorrow or friday and buying 'old' CPU + motherboard off a mate this weekend. I plunged on a 4k TV and have 1440p 120hz monitor, both of which I've barely been able to reach their full potential. Gonna be an exciting test going from an AMD 6200 + 2GB GTX 670 :)

Just order this on amazon and put it on my newegg watch list. It will be mine (the 980GTX).

Pretty funny, I considered changing up my case to a smaller form one with a micro ATX board a few weeks ago. Glad I stuck with my Corsair 650D!

Ok I found some measurement specs on some other sites. It seems like EVGA has the shortest board at 9.55 inches long. Some of the others get up to like 16 inches apparently.

If you havent heard anything yet youre probably fine. I hope I dont have to wait long for them to get stock again after that bull about just ordering a replacement.

I ran windows experience test, kombustor and the triangle of death. I could hear it real, real faint in the WET, but the rest, nothing, and putzing around with DSR in Far Cry, Dark Souls, Wasteland etc got me nothing. Looks like I'm safe!

Thanks man.

I asked on the Build a Pc thread but this is probsbly the best place, so...

How does the Asus Strix version compare to the Msi Twin Frozer version of the Gtx 970?

Awesome news, mine should be arriving in the morning, how are you finding the fan noise?

I previously had a 750 ti from EVGA which I couldn't hear the fans on. I have three case fans that makes a small bit of noise, but I honestly can't really tell the difference between the two cards. I haven't had one of these 10 inch monsters before, so I can't really make comparisons, but my card seems really quiet, even messing around with the super high resolutions in Far Cry 3 and Dark Souls 2. I haven't heard anything to complain about, and I use speakers too. No coil whine, at least on the ACX 1.0 version of the card. Also, temps haven't gotten past 55 after another 3 straight hours in Dead Rising 3. Good stuff.

No way any of the cards are 16 inches long.

Finally got my MSI 970 ordered. Should be here tomorrow. Tomorrow. I love you. Tomorrow.

Very similar. Both have fans that power off during light use. MSI has slightly higher clock out of the box. Both have similar overclocking headroom. Similar temps.

Go with the one that looks best to you or is cheaper. Or if you don't want to mess with overclocking yourself, then the MSI will be that tiny little bit faster.

I'm pretty sure the 980 Windforce is the longest, if it's even longer than the 970, which is only like 12 inches long and fit in my mid tower just fine. Less than an inch longer than the 770 Windforce I replaced with it.

I'm debating with myself whether or not it's worth overclocking my card. There's a review that shows it can vastly improve fps, like by 20 frames in Tomb Raider, and not change anything in a game like BioShock Infinite.

Anyone know if it fits in a haf x with ease?

Why not, man? Decent bump in performance in most games while still hitting perfectly good temps.

My 980 seems to have an issue with randomly dropping to 1% usage which then causes performance to tank for a few frames. Note the minimum FPS...

I just got the Gigabyte 970 and it doesn't fit in my Rosewill CHALLENGER case. Anyone have any recommendations for a new case that will fit the 970? I was comparing the 970 to my 670 windforce, and it's a lot longer than I expected it to be.

Can you remove any HDD cages from that case? Most will allow you to.

The Gigabyte 970 is exactly 297mm long. You can probably look up your case and see what the clearance is.
Are you sure? Gigabyte's site says 31cm.
If somebody could measure it up end to end it would be great, because I'm a little short on space here. Post a photo maybe too.

As someone who just purchased and put together the Phanteks Enthoo Pro case with my Gigabyte 970 two days ago, I recommend it without reservation.

Excellent cable management facilitation, great stock fans, very roomy, easy to get set up, and sells at a delicious price point of $99.

It's a case that generally gets a ton of praise, and it's very well-deserved.

As far as the Gigabyte 970's size goes, it is fairly lengthy. However, it did fit comfortably enough into my old Coolermaster CM 690 case w/ the HDD cages, which has a card size limit of 304mm.

Here is a side by side of the Gigabyte 970 (on top) and 670 (below it). The 970 is about an inch longer.

And here its installed in my Antec P280 case. Its dusty in there, I know... I did pick out the large dust bunnies. At least my cable management is decent!

Lovely blue windforce logo. My case doesn't have a window, so this is probably the only time I will ever see it, lol.

I could, but I have 2 HDDs and 1 SSD that I need the cages for.

This actually looks really nice for a great price. I'll check out it out, thanks!

Paypal messed up something with my 780 ebay shipment, gave me a $25 credit that more than covered my shipping costs on top of the $350 I got for it and my Gigabyte 970 shipped today with an estimated arrival date of Friday. End-result: I barely paid anything to sidegrade from a 780 to a 970 even though I sold the 780 after the 970 announcement and release. Happy times! :D

I hope 970 prices drop further by February, planning on SLI for TW3.

Apparently people are hitting over 1500Mhz *core* clocks with their 970's while still having under 70 degree load temps.

Flippin nuts.

*raises hand*

Comfortably got my Gigabyte 970 to 1542mhz at low temps and I haven't even tried to go higher yet.
Wow, i might actually jump from my gtx680 sooner than expected. Anyone tried to dress these new cards in old custom cooling systems? I have Thermalright Shaman on my reference card, will i be able to install it on 970/980?

I posted it before but for those who wonder what kind of OC is possible with the 970 G1 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cxCn_7MZZE
For bragging rights 1800mhz and temp at 63C is ridiculous (and not completely stable).

Bit of a noob here - what should I use to "measure" my GPU temps? Saw an earlier post about someone playing Tomb Raider and his card getting hot.

How hot should it get until I should be worried?

You dont want your GPU close to 80C. Then it all depends of the cooler you have. Between 60 and 70 with your GPU at 100% is what you should expect, for the 970 serie anyway.

The easiest way to check you GPU temp is through GForce experience if you have installed it. There is a section which list your GPU status.

Else there is the very popular MSI Afterburner, which allow monitoring and tweaking. It also comes with Rivatuner for an OSD solution.

is the AMD event not in some hours?

rQxgK5K.jpg

They even hinted VR stuff
Bx92JJeCMAALWje.jpg

But i cant find the exact time when this starts.

Last year at 25th September AMD had their GPU 14 event on Hawaii, where they announced the 2XX GPUs.

So pretty good chance for some new AMD GPUs if they have a new event exactly one year after the last event where they announced new GPUs.

Isn't that just a FirePro event?

I'm curious about people's temps with their new SLI setups.

Mine idle around 50°C and 41°C. (funnily enough Nvidia inspector tells me the GPU at 40°C is at 0% fan lvl and the one at 50°C is at 7%. All controlled automatically through AI Suite 3 from my motherboard.)

During a session of Metro both ramp up to about 71-72°C. Never seen it go above 73°C for the top card.

Thanks.

Amazingly, this thing won't fit just for a few mm. My luck.
My case is "guaranteed" to take up to 29/30cm cards, but since it doesn't have an had cage, or better it does but it depends have a closed wall towards the end of the card, I should be able to fit anything. I'm still worried or won't though lol.
