Destiny |OT5| New patch out Tues., Master Rahool reportedly crying into his robes

This quote in particular is troublesome to me. Why should we play the game that Bungie wants us to play? Isn't it up to the players to play how they want to play?

They're talking more about the reason players want to shoot at a cave without moving for hours on end. I don't think the majority of the player base actually bought Destiny to do that.

They need to move quickly on the engram stuff and strike rewards changes.

On September 9th the Bungie team traded late nights building Destiny for late nights playing Destiny with all of you. We'd looked forward to that day for years, knowing that it would bring millions of fresh eyes into our world and quickly change many of our plans and priorities. We were not disappointed.

In the last two weeks there have been many surprises, bugs, exploits, world firsts, and a whole lot of fun. It's been an amazing time. We think now is a great time to step back and let you all know how we think the game is holding up and to talk about some changes we are contemplating going forward.

We will be patching some of these issues as early as today. Others may not be addressed for a month or two. Stay tuned for updates and thank you for all your feedback online.

Loot

He Who Shall Not Be Named
Long ago during development, the Cryptarch decoded engrams of a given color into gear of that same color. Early in 2014 we added randomness, both for better and worse, to the decrypting process. The result was that end-of-session engram decoding got a lot more exciting and the Cryptarch himself suddenly acquired a personality. Both of these experiences were positive additions to the game.

But we didn't adequately communicate the potential random outcomes of decryption. Players see what looks like the familiar metaphor of item identification, while the Cryptarch thinks he's opening a grab bag of loot. Rage sharding of blues ensues. Expect to see changes to address this soon.

Destiny: The Cave
The social experience of a cave farming run is amazing: the herding to get a team of Guardians all behind the line and firing in the right direction, the rush to grab the loot, the scramble when the panic wave starts, the beckoning glow from inside the cave. The speed at which the community organized around this activity was inspiring and humbling to us.

But shooting at a black hole for hours on end isn't our dream for how Destiny is played. Our hope is that social engagement in public spaces is only one part of the Destiny experience. Expect changes soon which decrease the efficiency of cave farming and correspondingly increase engram drops from completing activities.

Reward Celebration
Growing more powerful by acquiring new upgrades, gear or progression is central to Destiny's player experience. Our goal is to always celebrate when this occurs, both as a reward in and of itself and to communicate to players what is going on.

During development we sometimes prioritized making a system functional over celebrating its rewards, for example:
The Vault of Glass contains highly coveted loot but the actual moment of reward happens without fanfare and can be easily missed.
The lowest level of the Daily Heroic gives great XP and Reputation rewards, but neither of these progressions appears on the postgame screen.

We will slowly be addressing these and other issues going forward.

Social

Voice Communication
Our vision for Destiny is that all players, even matchmade players in the Crucible, Strikes, the Tower or public spaces, be able to communicate with one another in a way that promotes positive socialization. Voice communication is the easy answer, but existing voice paradigms, including those in our own Halo games, have not done enough to protect players from abusive griefing from a minority of players.

Destiny's near-term solution will be to allow players to opt-in to voice communication during matchmade activities. Work on this feature was underway at launch and should be rolled out this year in Strikes and the Crucible.

Activities

Strikes
Strikes are intended to be a fun, combat-filled romp and stomp with a big boss and cool rewards at the end. Better with cooperation, but doable in a pick up group.

Since launch we've tracked down an issue which has made Strikes more challenging than originally designed by both increasing damage taken by players and decreasing the damage inflicted by players on the boss. Expect to see this addressed soon, and for Strikes to become a little less grindy as a result (sorry, Raiders - incoming damage is working as intended in the Vault of Glass).

Balance

Our goal when balancing Destiny is to never have one player choice-- for example a choice of class or weapon-- either be so much better than the alternatives that it is the only valid choice or to be so much worse that it would always be a mistake to choose. When we are successful with this kind of balance the result is a wide set of equally compelling player builds, some of which may be preferred by one player or another but none of which is an absolute right or wrong choice.

Exotic Weapons
Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel and sound overpowered, but to not actually break the game. We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts and expect their idiosyncrasies to sometimes be a little frustrating. We find ourselves wanting to collect them all and hope players feel the same way.

Not all our Exotic Weapons currently live up to this promise. In particular those weapons received from completing exotic bounties including Thorn and Bad Juju have disappointed many of us who have gone through the great effort to obtain them because, despite looking and sounding amazing, they feel underpowered. We're here to offer some advice: don't shard those guns. Their time will come.

Auto Rifles
The Auto Rifle archetype is designed to appeal to players who like to throw up a wall of bullets and not worry if a few miss their target. It is intended to inflict sustained damage at close to medium range, but to lose effectiveness at longer ranges.

Today the Auto Rifle is too effective at long range, even beating Scout and Pulse Rifles in some circumstances. Expect stability and/or damage adjustments to the Auto Rifle to address this in the weeks ahead.

Scout Rifles
Scout Rifles are for players who like to keep their enemies at medium range and hate to miss. They are intended to be an awkward weapon to use at close range but to be dominant-- as long as you land your shots-- at medium and longer ranges.

Scouts just aren't hitting hard enough today when compared to other precision weapons. We'll be addressing this soon.

Shotguns
Shotguns are for those situations where you need to deliver a massive spike of damage, right now, to the thing standing next to you about to do you harm.

Today shotguns are effective beyond their intended range, especially when upgraded with that intention. Expect changes soon to address shotguns which push the envelope of what it means to be close quarters.

Thank you for helping us drive these changes. Keep sharing. Keep talking. We’re watching and listening.

This deserves a new thread. I'm sad they didn't say anything about matchmaking.

I don't really care about the cave. I never used it since Legendary Engrams have yielded actual legendary items maybe twice in the whole time I have been playing the game. But the Queen's Missions did always give legendary gear, usually redundant, and you could break it down for shards. I'm not sure what the point of redundant gear is going to be now if you cannot get shards, and there was never any trading with vendors. It isn't like a lot of people are creating second and third characters of the same class. If they were handing out weapons that you could save for when another character hits 20, it would at least make some sense.

So no more farming the moon missions, no more farming treasure cave, just do strikes/missions over and over hoping for a drop. Enjoy those cutscenes!

Same, I was excited to try out the loot cave. Guess I'll stick with Diablo tonight.

Excited to try out the loot cave? Haha, dude, here's what you're missing: Shoot into black hole, reload, repeat about 20 times, run into cave to collect ammo and some engrams, return to bluff, repeat all previous steps until you go blind.

The rage on here about them removing it is pretty hilarious. The only gripe I am willing to hear out on that is that they should be fixing the engram/cryptarch/loot drop shit at the same time.

But really? You thought that cave was going to stick around?

The Queen's Bounty Legendary ass shard nerf is dumb. For the sake of consistency, sharding a purple should result in the same thing no matter where it came from.

"We are going to fix our loot system in the coming weeks ahead so that you actually play the game to get loot.

But for now, you can just have an impossible grind of nothing."

Hmm, with DriveClub and a slew of other games around the corner, and Bungie's persistence in making things impossible, I wonder how many people will stick around. There's a lot of people, like me, who have defended this game, but when Bungie starts screwing us over with these updates that dick us over, that support diminishes, and one thing we know is that gamers know how to hold a grudge.

I still have hope that there's a master plan somewhere at Bungie that includes free content. I'm starting to think that the stuff about the Golden Age, the Collapse, and the Darkness is auto-biographical, and represents a mighty studio's fall from grace thanks to the evil powers of evil Publishers.

Luckily I spammed the Queen's stuff and have like 40+ ass. shards. It was kind of inevitable that this and the Christmas Cave would get a patch.

For real. Almost hilarious how excited folks can get over updates that don't even have a real rollout date set.
It's reassuring to read that Bungie a) is aware of the issues, b) has a similar opinion on them as we do, and c) is working on them. So yeah, "hilarious". Oh right, "almost hilarious".

again, this isn't about the cave. its about their lack of understanding the problem that they created and how that this type of farming - which is going to pop up somewhere else - is the player response to the screwed loot system

them attacking this instead of doing the simple thing like making elites/majors more likely to drop, bosses, or even previously beaten story missions offering loot on completion would've solved the problem almost entirely

sure, but i imagine that figuring out the best way to balance out the increased drops from your proposed changes is more involved than just upping the respawn timer to a bunch of mobs. just because this was patched first doesnt mean that they arent working on solutions to the other problems, its just far easier to change this now. they already said in the dev post that they were looking at how to change the drop rates of engrams and the decrypted rewards as well. so them patching out the loot cave doesnt mean people cant grind out gear any more...that grind is just slightly more involved, but still the same thing

They're talking more about the reason players want to shoot at a cave without moving for hours on end. I don't think the majority of the player base actually bought Destiny to do that.

They need to move quickly on the engram stuff and strike rewards changes.

Fortunately for Bungie, they basically made a weasel statement that allows them no real culpability or timeframe on how fast they make the needed fixes.

This quote in particular is troublesome to me. Why should we play the game that Bungie wants us to play? Isn't it up to the players to play how they want to play?

You can still shoot at that black hole for hours if you want lol But getting more engrams from standing afk by the cave was BS and everyone knows it. No one should be arguing against the nerf.

Bungie you fucking idiots.

Please explain to me as a level 28 almost 29, has any use for the Queen's Wrath now?

6 legendary items that have no use a day?
Items for sale from the new vendor that are useless at this level?

Your first addition has proven to be USELESS.

Fuck!!!

Some activities aren't meant for some levels. Lower levels should be running the base matchmade strikes. As a level 28, you should not be running the level 18 strike playlist.

The queens wrath is an event that seems tailored to people who need to get legendary gear. My friend got her first legenday from it and is grateful.

Its just not its not used for easy ass shard farming lol. Game has barely been out and people are already close to max level. Calm down. Run the nightfall. Run the raid. You are at the endgame buddy.

Its not about the cave - its about them thinking that THAT is biggest issue with the game and first on their list of things to do lmao

everything that bungie has said and done after release says that they have no plan or don't give a fuck if things make sense or not

They're fixing stuff buddy.

Bungie are saying (in summary)

- Rewards from the loot cave were not as intended. To balance this, they will be adding better rewards for doing actual missions/stuff

- Voice chat will be available in match making (opt in)

- Some Exotics are not 'exotic' enough and due to the grind involved, they will make them better

- Auto Rifles are OP at range. Shotguns too. This will be balanced much better

It is all there, read it - http://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=12188

In honour of the new OT I made a quick gif of the "Precision kills with this weapon cause the target to explode" perk.

So much fun.

bkhjac.gif

I enjoy that rifle a lot haha. At first I was disappointed my first legendary weapon was a scout rifle but the explosions make up for it!

I think it was a little heavy handed, but with how long the event is I suppose it was too much of an unintended draw.

I'd rather see Ascended Shards become slightly easier to earn outside of the event. Otherwise people would just be stuck in the same hole again after the event ends.

Hmm.

Destiny's near-term solution will be to allow players to opt-in to voice communication during matchmade activities. Work on this feature was underway at launch and should be rolled out this year in Strikes and the Crucible.

Opt In still makes me feel not great about it. I'd prefer opt out just so that the *default* is being able to talk to people. If people need to go into a menu to enable it I still expect they often won't.

and another big thing for PVP...

if you're going to nerf ARs, then SRs DEFINITELY don't need a buff

thats some scary shit to think about for a lot of people complaining about the kill speeds especially. maybe if they just raise the damage on non-precision hits or something but still... this can't just be a plus/minus thing

FFS, just logged on and got the update, I got 6 helms and 4 vests in inventory...

Broke one down and got nothing at all.

So queens content is pointless now, yes? I see the cave is done for too.

Less and less reasons to play the game.

I feel like I want to play it, but when I come to my senses and see what there is to play, I don't. There just isn't enough. The last 3 days have been spent shooting at the cave, PVP with the sole aim of trying to finish bounties and strikes in the random hope of getting some engrams. Everything I've done has been done with the intention of getting slightly better gear.

So am I missing something? Is there anything else left to do? I've done the story. Everything I am doing is just taking me back to a place I've already visited 20 times. I'm just grinding for gear, but for what reason?

Game is small. Very nice, but small, and I'm feeling like it just wont do.

Pretty much. Game needs more content not more loot grinds.

People are arguing against the nerf because, as of today and likely the near future, there is no alternative. Doing strikes gives you nothing. Story missions, nothing. That's the issue. If these were fixed, no one would care, and if they were fixed initially, no one would even be doing the cave in the first place.

Yeah, I understand, but unlocking new gear is the ONLY way to see more of the game. The most efficient way to do this was to cave farm, which actually wasn't that efficient in itself because of the randomness of engram decryption. Like I said before, this update feels like Bungie is taking from the game without giving anything back. Now it will only take me that much longer to get to the raid, to play the higher level strikes, which is the only stuff that's interesting to me at this point in the game.

PRECISELY.

amen

"And on the Third week, RNGesus emerged from the Cave of Treasures and ascended to the Heavens by depleting the Ascendant Shards and in his absence, the Cave was one of Treasures no more."

Cryptarch 7:77

HA! Are people really that salty about the cave patch?

The other fixes need to happen like yesterday. Matchmaking improvements, voice, etc...

I'm glad to hear the boss damage is actually a glitch, though I'm a bit skeptical about that.

Well I have basically no motivation left to do anything more on my 28 character. I was enjoying the Queen missions because playing them was a half decent challenge and I got a few shards from them. It's not like getting 5+ shards a day is going break things for me. I've already put a huge amount of time into it and I guess am now really burning out of replaying the exact same stuff endlessly.

So many little frustrations with this game.

The Monte Carlo AR has an extremely unpredictable and shaky recoil. It makes it impossible to get crits consistently. Does anyone know how much the stability upgrade helps? I love the looks of the Monte Carlo, but I'm fearing it might be worthless.

Mines upgraded all the way except for some extra damage and in my opinion it's not great.
