You should be running missions on the easiest difficulty now. Since it's been confirmed that even a legendary engram can drop from a level 1 there is no point to running heroic missions. Also since the new hotfix today, if you die - your chances of getting an engram drop is lesser. More kills per minute and no deaths = more chance at loot.

Oh, so light increases as well? It's not like that with regular legendary and exotic gear is it? I definitely haven't noticed if it is.
It was the video game form of literally shooting fish in a barrel. I think that's why some people found it fun.

All these future updates sound well and good, but a part of me was hoping all these "fixes" would come in a more timely manner. Also, I do still hope that some actual free content will come other than the paid expansions. Heck, just add more enemy variety to the current Strikes so they don't feel like the same experiences every time or create some more patrol missions for us to engage in.
This is true. However, it would be like in MMOs where you get actual gear or you get marks/comms to trade in for gear that make you perform better in said raid until you get the drops you need.
Where this falls on its head I think is the fact that gear can be upgraded.

Its cute that Bungie are making the same mistakes every MMO/Grindtastic game dev makes. Instead of improving the game and fixing real issues, they patch harmless exploits that are allowing people some small relief from the incessant grind.
I'm really glad I didn't get the season pass. Its looking more and more like I'm not gonna care by the time the first dlc releases.

You're in luck, there's a tentacle-faced weirdo who literally sells you exotic weapons and armor every weekend. Public events and Weekly Strikes get you currency to buy, no irl wallets to open! :-D
I'm still going to play the Queen's bounty in hopes of getting that nifty sniper rifle, no just won't be racing to do it as much.
Keep doing strikes/story and crucible. The loot will come...might not like most of it but it will come.
To get legendaries efficiently, focus on either Vanguard (PVE) or Crucible (PVP). Do your bounties every day when you can. You will quickly earn marks and reputation that will let you buy gear to supplement your Queen's gear.

I was fed up after getting 3 chest pieces in a row. Those missions are recycled shit anyway. Now that Shards are out, I see zero reason to waste any time here. The things you can buy from her are useless anyway.

If you've got all your gear from Queen's, you should start running strikes and crucible for Vanguard and Crucible Marks. You can use those to buy more gear once you have level 2 with a given faction.
Outside of that...Yeah, just run stuff for fun and hope you get goodies to dismantle to upgrade gear to get to light 26 so you can raid?
Yeah, admittedly this surprised me after my first heroic, strange coins are nice, but absolutely no loot other than the random drops, which in turn brought about the whole loot cave craze. There is no point to pushing yourself in anything other than nightfall or raiding for loot...very disappointing.

You get 2 Ascendants for completing daily heroic on level 28, right?

It is. You get 2 Light per armor upgrade on a legendary, except for the first upgrade in the final column (which is 1 Light). The raid item you have has 3 base Light higher than any other legendary in that slot, on par with an exotic.
They're level 24 so probably not.

What level are you? I'd recommend doing Vanguard bounties and patrols until you get your Vanguard faction to rank 2, then doing the daily Heroic mission and the level 20+ strike playlists to farm emblems to buy Vanguard gear with. You'll get a decent number of blues along the way that have an okay-ish chance of being upgrades. And of course, do the Queen's Wrath stuff for purples if you're able.
Not gonna lie, it's an uphill battle.

The loot will come, once you buy it from the vanguard, crucible quarter master, or Xur.

if i were to run a story mission on level 24 or whatever just because i happen to like that mission (or if its accompanied by a bounty), there's no reward at completion. at all.

I'm pretty sure I beat the story and hit level 20 without receiving a single blue drop, let alone a purple. I'm not looking to max out my character a week after release, but I would like to be able to make SOME progress without relying in exploits. I simply don't have hours every day to play this and make progress on my character.
Well, the one reliable way to get Ascendant Shards is now gone. Good job to everyone who got dozens of Shards already, then. Completely fucks everyone else out of progression for months potentially, depending on how RNGesus smiles upon you. I'm sure this is exactly what people wanted!

So how long do we have to wait until the Cryptarch gets fixed? Loot is even more scarce now, and the Cryptarch is still completely broken, so the only option is to grind like a madman on alts for marks? FUN.

Patching the cave is fine, but lowering drop rates on Engrams, not fixing the Cryptarch for god knows how long, and removing the only reliable way to get Shards? Absolutely ridiculous. People were frustrated with the maddeningly slow progression before, imagine how they'll feel now! There needs to be a way to get shards that doesn't rely on RNG, because as it is, I almost always get Energy from the Ascendant quests, which is useless for progression. Marks can't be the only way to get gear that isn't RNG. Some kind of barter system needs to be added to the raid and the Nightfall, maybe one token per boss, per week, that can be used at a vendor for Shards, Energy, or a selection of raid gear - just like every other MMO ever. Even if you limit progression to one piece a week (or even one piece every two weeks) it would be better than the RNG bullshit that's in place currently. It's very clear that Bungie has no fucking idea what they're doing here.)
