Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Was waiting for something like this so I could compare to my Titan Blacks SC. Here is my results from yesterday:

I am at stock SuperClock on the Titans, and I'm assuming you have a 5930k vs 5960x? My 4930k was running at a small OC of 4.2ghz.

Results line up with 980s being slightly faster than 780ti/Titan Blacks and Haswell-E improvements over Ivy-E. What are your temps like?

Well now you need to upgrade smokey. This can't stand!

I am drooling. Definitely try those tests.

From the first checkpoint to the second checkpoint on level two (IE checking weapon caches in the long grass while under fire, sniping out the guns on the tower).

1920 x 1200 Very High/Very High, 4xMSAA.

Min 75
Max 200
Avg 116

I was hearing the same thing about my 4770k as well. This is good to hear. Does that mean that if I did bump up power, temp, and voltage, I could get an even higher core clock?

Possibly. Only one way to find out!

you guys are the worst lol

temps!!

Wait, so what do I do now that I've found a stable OC? Check off "Apply Overclocking at Startup"?

Save it as a profile. If you're using Afterburner or precision you need to click the lock next to the profiles, click save then a profile number, click lock again and there you go. I prefer this method instead of booting your machine with an aggressive OC on your cards.

Thanks.

I'm wondering how far the 980 can be overclocked. Have you tried with each of your cards individually? If so, did you get to the maximum allowable voltage before getting into the mid 80s in temperature?

THat is just damn awesome. Those moments with the frame spikes via fraps.. I assume those are perhaps fraps mistakes? Or did you notice an odd frame time hitch when that occured?

84,83,70

Is this with a custom fan curve you made or no?

Pretty similar to my setup. So the more efficient Maxwell arch doesn't make too much of a difference.

Dont know about 980s but for me I leave my GPU at stock. As you can see from his temps they get pretty hot. I guess you can say they are OC'd since they are Superclock versions.

These setups really should be under water to get their max potential but that's a whole different beast.

That's with whatever they come out of the box with from EVGA. I guess the less efficient coolers on the 980s are why we're seeing similar temps.

So basically I saw this review: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_970_g1_gaming_review,26.html

And I jumped over to the overclocking section at the end, and literally just bumped up my Core Clock by 150MHz, and Memory by 500MHz like they did, but didn't mess with my max temp, power, or voltage like they did, and made it through Fire Strike with an 11396 vs my non OCd 10382.

Should I stop at that point? I know bumping up my Core Clock by 200MHz literally just makes Fire Strike crash, and occasionally my GPU altogether to the point where I have to hard reset my computer. But is there a reason I didn't have to mess with my temps, power, or voltage like they did in the review? Do I have more room to bump up the Memory?

Edit: Pics of final tests

Non OCd

OCd 1,328 MHz / 2,003 MHz

My 780 is close enough, I can breath safe.

I would guess temps will be better on Maxwell once they shrink the node.

Hopefully.

Nah. More like 3 GPUs sandwiched together on air generate a ton of heat. Only thing that could possibly help is the 20mn and beyond shrinks that DarkFlow was referring to.

So...I feel like I'm missing out now, or being dumb, with a 780ti that is less than a month old.

So I check Amazon (God bless them), and it seems I am allowed to return it...by tomorrow.
I assume that means if I take it to a collect+ store tomorrow, it will be okay. ?

So, is the 970 really holding up that well?

It's like half the price...

If you can do it, go for it. Just hit return and you'll lock that return in.

Honestly, if I were as lucky as you, I would return it and get the 970. For one huge reason: HDMI 2.0. Your set for 4K.

But that's nearly 2000 points more :(. My 780 does 9151, oc yours and you can easily go over 9k too.

I wonder if the CPU still plays a big part in influencing scores in 3dmark. Those 4770k physics scores are way past what my 3570k can do.

My Gigabyte 780 OC kinda sucks with OCing, I lost the lottery with that baby.

I have some old results in 3dmark from back in the day. Beat this with your fancy 980.

Also had one with the system I upgraded from. Core2Duo was a huge leap, I took this one the day before.

Thanks, I will do it.

Just talking to amazon customer service to see if it's okay to just take it to a store tomorrow.

--they are all cool with it! I even explained why I'm returning it.

Amazon man.

--BTW she mentioned that I actually have up to a year to return it. It's just I can only create the return label on my end within that month. If anyone is in a similar position it may be worth talking to them about it.

Weird, i get twice as many points in this version of 3D Mark with my 8800GT. I do have an i5 mind you, i just didn't expect the difference to be that big, especially since my GPU is a bit slower.

I think the gt was only a wee bit slower than the gtx. Your i5 though is probably quite a bit faster than his cpu and I noticed past versions of 3dmark tend to like faster cpus a lot

The 8800 GTX came out before the 8800 GT, didn't it? I definitely remember the 8800 GT being the new hotness and oh man it's way better than the GTX (at least in price/performance ratio) and whatnot. It was the 970 of its day in many ways!

GTX was first but scarce.

I bought one with a fried fan controller but kept it and rigged my own lol. Because it took forever to get and was out of stock for the forseeable future when mine arrived.

Look at the jump between the AMD and the Intel chip. Over 2000 more. I also ended up getting the GTX for the price of the GT because Fry's fucked up.

3dMark is annoying to use and the GPU score is still influenced by the CPU, so it's not that great for this thread.

Let's do some Heaven instead?

Is coil whine in the MSI 970 a common problem? I got mine in the mail but haven't opened it up yet, wondering if I should send it back and get the Asus instead...

Nah, it's just a matter of luck. I think we have had instances of coil whine of most brands in this thread by now.

But how about a game like Watch Dogs? Even a 780ti struggles but those Titans run pretty well.

No, WD is pretty shitty on any card, no matter if the VRAM is full or not.

Quick question regarding overclocking on the GTX 970. I've just had mine pass a unigine heaven 4.0 at 1440Mhz, what's the long term implications of gaming on a card at that clock speed, if any? Score raised from 1720 to 1905 - MSI gaming GTX 970 paired with a 4770.

It's all about the temps.

They are letting me hold on to it...till the custom 980s come out here in the UK...then I just ask them to create a return label as long as it's within 11months.

Think I'll get rid of this monitor next.

WTF, IS THIS ACTUALLY TRUE?

The 780Ti is less than a year old at this point, so everyone that bought one from Amazon can just return it and upgrade to 980s?

Edit: just noticed you're in the UK. Must be an EU thing, because I've never heard of such a thing on Amazon US.
