Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

It seems that this is normal to some extent, but it seems a bit much?

I guess it does help with my GPU1 temps though, so at least it's the right card.

Just ordered a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980. Hope Amazon ships it soon.

At $630, it certainly ain't cheap, but seems to be the fastest single GPU on the market right now with amazing cooling and OC potential. I know it's not near the bang for the buck that the 970 is, but I have some weird psychological issue of wanting the best version of something.

I was going back and forth between 970 SLI or 980 for a while, but decided I would rather get a single card for the moment, at least until those SLI voltage issues are sorted. Didn't want a single 970 as it would actually be a step down from my overclocked 780Ti.

If performance is satisfactory at 1440P on my ROG Swift, I might stick with one. If not, I'll just order another one. Don't have plans for 4K or multiple monitors anytime soon, so it should be a pretty solid setup for the foreseeable future.

So... are you guys waiting for the 8GB version or not?

No. They'll be priced out of my acceptable price to performance range.

I also don't see the 4gigs being that big of a hinderance. The only game remotely requesting that much is mordor ultra and we'll see exactly what the reality of it is once its released.

I am, but that's because I'm not buying a card until the holiday season.
Good idea. I'd like to do that too, but right now is really the best time for me. Anything closer to the holidays (financial crunch), is going to probably piss off my wife..

I game in 1440p on a 27" monitor and ideally I may even want to downsample as well. I really should wait for 8GB.

So... are you guys waiting for the 8GB version or not?

Yes but only because I have a 780ti atm, working well enough but I expect to hit close to or more than 3-4GB VRAM with upcoming games in like 6 months at the resolutions I want to play at. Sli 970 makes too much sense price/performance.

I then expect to upgrade next year again due to expected large performance gains, then hopefully not for a while...

So... are you guys waiting for the 8GB version or not?

I am, but whether or not I opt for 8GB cards depends on the price. If there isn't an offering at USD$399 or less than I'll probably settle for 4GB instead.

Damn, Amazon has an expected shipping date of November 11th for the 980. I really hope that's a placeholder as I can't wait that long.

Seems like *all* of Canada is just out of stock. Went to a few local areas as well as online-shopping - nothing, nada, nowhere. Red Flag Deals users are apparently having massive trouble finding units anywhere, too.

I grabbed mine hours after the announcement on Newegg.ca and they went out of stock, seemingly never to return soon after that. It's kind of nuts.

Following up on this, I did check the voltage of my two cards in Precision:

Kind of impressive to still have this OC run stable with the first card being under-volted. I hope this will get fixed so I can crank out a bit more performance (not that it's needed...)

Sure.

Impressive indeed, disappointing however that it is the case...hopefully all is sorted out soon.

They literally priced the 970 so it would sell like crack coated hot cakes and it sold better than expected. Nvidia's laughing on its way to the bank while its partners try to fill the orders everyone's sending in.

I have no plans to play at higher than 1080p anytime in the near future, so I'm thinking (hoping) the 4GB 970 will be fine for me for 2-3 years. Right now, it's still just sitting on my desk in the box still, going to see how Mordor runs on my 770 2GB model and make a decision then.

Eyeing the 970. MSI gamer or asus strix? What say you gaf? I'm torn on the two... The noise levels have put me off of my favored card brand (evga) and I've had really bad experiences with MSI CS in the past... But It would seem the asus may be the 'weakest' of the bunch?

Sigh, think my MSI 970 card may have coil whine troubles. It doesn't do it all the time, but it's quite audible when it does do it.

I mean I think it's the card anyway, I don't believe I've heard it before(although I do have headphones on most of the time).

I know what you mean, especially if that's the reference model. In sense the 780ti lightning would shit all over the 980 in any test. A good reason to completely skip the 900 series

You guys holding out for the 8GB are more than likely going to be waiting at least a year (two?). IIRC, the rumor that nvidia is going to release them any time soon isn't even substantiated (I may be wrong though). As of now, these cards are a great value. And even if they do release 8GB versions, they will most likely be priced accordingly (much more expensive than the 970 or 980). And you're not going to see a $150 price drop or something for these cards even if they do announce 8GB versions soon. Their current prices are right on the money (especially the 970).

I keep wanting to get rid of my 780ti for a 980 but logic would tell me that's dumb. My saving grace is that likely next year when the proper upgrade is out, the VRAM will be there backing it up.

I think it makes sense to wait until we see more non-crossgen games early next year.

Fuck newegg. I'm never ordering anything from them again. I have a new, unopened 970 Gigabyte G1 that I want to RMA and they are trying to charge me a $55 dollar restocking fee.

Complain to them about it and they should take it back for free. I did that a couple of years ago and they even sent me a free UPS label to print and send it back with.

It wants 6GB of VRAM for it's downloadable texture pack, yes. Not necessarily 'it wants 6GB for ultra." Even then it's a bit grey as to how much is really needed at 1080p because the 6GB may also be including supersampling.

I don't know where this "higher resolution needs more VRAM" schtik came from but we stopped worrying about the size of the frame buffer a decade ago.

Hold out as long as you can. I have the same cards in Sli and was going to upgrade but will now hold out for the 6 or 8 gig version. I may just skip the 980 entirely and see what comes out in q3 next year. None of the games I currently own tax my system at all.

I don't know where they plan to go with GM210. GTX 990? 985? 980Ti?

That's the one I'm waiting for I think. It should have 60+ fps 4K on a single card.

So... are you guys waiting for the 8GB version or not?

no real reason to IMO.

I have been using 2x980's over the weekend on a Dell UP3214Q 4k and every game is doing 50-60fps+

The extra 4gb isn't going to be worth the extra premium they are going to charge(probably $150-200 extra) for it. Performance to dollar isn't worth it even at 4k. That might change next year with new games, but by that time there will be a GTX1080/R 390x

The 4gb ones are probably fine if you only want to game at high settings or above at 1080p, right? I'm paranoid with all of this Mordor and Evil Within talk.

Going by the last cycle, Titan 2 then maybe 1080->1080ti. 3 gens worth of cards hardly represents a pattern, though. So who knows.

990 would likely be saved for a dual gpu card.

If Mordor and Evil Within don't play well at 1080p on a GTX 970 with 4GB of VRAM, they might as well not have released the games on the platform. Mordor's only setting that is even in question is a optional texture pack downloaded separately, so I'm sure that will be fine. Games with some over the top settings that are only achievable with super high end hardware, or hardware that doesn't exist can be a good thing, as long as it scales to reasonable levels.

Evil Within, your card is well above recommended specs but the wording in that blog post doesn't fill me with confidence with that port in general. Id Tech 5 is weird.

Same, 4GB VRAM isn't giving me any issues at 4K right now. Been gaming on my 55" HU8550, most titles run very smooth. Witcher 2 is a locked 60 @ 4K.

Good, thanks, i'm one of those people that only likes to upgrade their stuff every 3 or more years.

I rather go for overkill now. I'm waiting on the 8gig as well now.

It's only the EVGA 970s having issues, right? Would I be in the clear if I ordered a reference 980?

Set up an auto notify for newegg. Managed to order one during a brief window yesterday.

Nice. I just did that. Hope I can score one before I leave for vacation on Wednesday.

I really wanted it from Amazon, but not if that November 11 estimate is accurate.

I like how my 970's just barely strong enough to keep 60fps with Assassin's Creed 4, but only with SMAA and no soft shadows. Also, turning PhysX on causes the game to stutter like crazy. Nice port.

I have a asus 970, any brain dead easy guides to overclocking for someone who has never done it before?

I have the same card and this is what I did:

1. Download MSI Afterburner
2. Run Uniengine Valley 1.0 benchmark to see your card's stock score
3. Increase core clock by 100
4. Run Valley again and see if it's stable and it finished the benchmark with crashing, artifacting or your temperature going too high (my card fluctuated between 67-70c during the tests)
5. Increase core clock by 100
6. repeat step 4
7. Increase core clock by 10
8. Repeat steps 4 & 7 until you get crashes/problems and dial back the overclock until it's stable
9. Increase Memory clock by 100
10. Follow the same steps as for the core clock overclock

My Asus 970 is sitting with a 200 core clock increase and a 300 memory clock increase with no voltage increase. I could push it further but I want the card to be stable and not too stressed.

Based Amazon UK. Thought I would check what can be done about my overly noisy PS4, they are giving refund. YAY. As soon as a pair of 970s are in stock they will be mine :D

Caved and popped the 970 in this evening at almost midnight. After installing the latest drivers from Nvidia's site, I fired up the notorious Watch Dogs, which ran like garbage at pretty much any setting on my 770 2GB. Set everything to max at 1080p, and the game runs flawlessly now, none of the hitches or slow downs, looks great, and runs awesomely.

Finally, I might actually play Watch Dogs.

Can't wait for Mordor on Tuesday now.
