Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

The clutch is the one on the left.
:P

You'll love playing 'stick'. Adds a whole new layer of control. I couldn't get on with the G27 shifter though, found it too floppy and imprecise. It's one of the reasons I sold the G27 and bought a GT2.
I think coming from the DFGT I'll find it good enough ;-)

Force yourself to learn heel-toeing, if you're anything like me it's going to suck pretty bad at first and you'll probably end up concentrating so much on the shifting while breaking that you'll mess up most corners, but when you get better and it and you don't have to think about what you're doing it's going to be (in my opinion) one the most rewarding and "involving" things you can do in sim racing.

The feeling you get when you pass someone under brakes while working all three pedals simultaneously and nailing the corner is really something else.

I personally used a sequential at first to get it right but honestly I think you're better off learning the H-gate right away.
Thanks for the in-depth reply! One question: Do you need to heel-toe with all type of cars? Seeing tutorials, you're supposed to clutch to neutral, then clutch to downshift, so I'm guessing sequential shifting doesn't need heel-toeing?

Okay, I have few questions and WMD is so cluttered that I will appreciate answer or direction to the proper topic, PM is perfectly acceptable because it is basically still a WMD-releated info:

1) Has SMS disclosed details about the funders getting a free version of the game? I have never seen any option for that yet (I am Senior Member)?

2) Can we choose the version for the "free game"? For example, I would like to get a PS4 version.

3) What is the situation related to Limited Edition and funders?

Thank you guys in advance.
1- Full members and up get the free copy. Lower members get discount. How the discount will work is not yet known.
2- You're supposed to grab the version you want, but as stated above, how this will work isn't yet clear.
3- They're working on giving the LE to all Full Members and above. Are discussing with Namco, so no oficial word on it yet.

Can you tune up cars in this? Like bigger turbos, exhausts etc?
You can setup your car. There's no tunning per se. Think motorsports, not street races.

I'm on weekly updates however theres been 3 massive updates in the past 4 days. Anyone else having this issue? |
I would hardly call that an issue ;) They've been introducing all the pit to car speeches and introductory videos to career contracts.

Has anyone from GAF gone hands on with the game at E3 or Gamescom? What's your opinion? How was the handling of cars? Was it more towards NFS:Shift? And about the visuals?
Many peope here have been playing this game for years now. The game is a sim through and through, so no, it doesn't feel anything like NFS: Shift.

Why are these people releasing the steam version at a later date? I saw in a interview where a dev said it was coming out on pc,ps4,xbox one on November and on steam at a later time... Makes no sense.
I would check that info twice. The game is Steamworks, so I don't see how they could release the Windows version without Steam. Probaby it's the SteamOS version the one that will release at a later date.

TOCA was never a true sim in the vein of top of the class PC sims, but from what I've seen, Grid Autosport is a simcade with a more motorsport-like career structure.
Eh. Felt like TOCA 3 was definitely a simcade, too. Wouldn't even rank it with GT and Forza in terms of physics.

I do remember it having a shit ton of variety though, so I guess Autosport doesn't quite have that.

I agree with this. Learn it ASAP. If you're a no-driver-aid kind of guy, many cars will plain be undriveable unless you heel/toe.

It only took me about a week, playing an hour or two every day to get a somewhat decent grasp of it(its basically just about training muscle memory). You soon stop thinking about it.

So I patched up PCars today after quite some time to give it a whirl and the aliasing is just terrible. What's the best solution to get a smooth picture?

I'm not sure if I just misunderstood what you wrote there, but are you talking about double clutching? I learned to drive a tank in the military that had a non-synchronized transmission which required you to double clutch on downshifts, was a lot of fun that. I've yet to encounter a driving sim that required it though :P

You don't need heel-toeing on sequential cars (since you won't have your left foot on the clutch anyway while driving), but some cars with paddles or sequential stick do benefit from giving a blip of the throttle on downshifts.

I'm sure you already know this, but if someone who's less familiar with heel-toeing is reading this the idea is to match your revs on downshifts so that you minimize any engine braking, which makes the car much more stable in corner entry. It's basically giving a blip of the throttle with the heel of your right foot simultaneously while braking.

Man, I miss driving a tank...

Have you deleted your CARS folder? Best AA solution is DS9X :D

Best playable AA is DS4X/DS2X, depending on what you can run. DS2X is good enough except for some elements. I would use FXAA or SMAA, as both can add artifacts to the image.

Well, I don't know shit about heel-toeing,so I looked up for a tutorial, I found some, two of the most easy to follow explained that you indeed double clutch when you heel-toeing.

Ah I see what you mean, if you're going down multiple gears and want to use some engine breaking to improve braking power then yeah you'll press and release the clutch (when it's in gear) multiple times. Sounds more complicated than it is.

Have you deleted your CARS folder?
Which one are you supposed to delete? The actual game folder? Isn't that one maintained by Steam?

DS2X is already an incredible performance hit with really bad smoothing. I can't even turn on FXAA in the options for some reason.

He most likely means the CARS folder inside My Documents. Usually you delete the profile file inside of it with each new build to avoid some bugs and other weird stuff but it's not a bad idea to delete the whole folder every once in a while (reset graphics options, etc).

What Arucardo said: It's the CARS folder in My Documents. I recommend you to delete the whole thing.

I meant I wouldn't use them, sorry. Anyway, delete the folder and then come back and tell us how things are now.

@Arucardo: Thanks for the tips ;-)

Okay, I deleted the CARS folder, disabled SMAA/FXAA and set AA to DS2X. Looks much smoother now (or my eyesight got much worse suddenly). Thanks!

Good to hear.

Edit:

I just recorded a video of the Pagani Zonda R @ Monza GP. It's special because I'm using some tweaked files by WMD member JetPistol. They basically set back the depth fog render distance, so it starts rendering a few hundred meters away from what it used to. I found the default setting too close and gave the game an artificial image that's mostly gone with these tweaks. You can download them from here: http://forum.wmdportal.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160198 ). I encourage everybody to try them out by unpacking the RAR into the CARS folder found in My Documents.

Any mention on 'ultra' setting for world detail & another option max setting is high? Would love to see a bump in visuals if it's possible.

I don't think it is in the plans.

This weekend we raced three moderately long races, In case you're bored or can't sleep:

In case you're wondering: Damage, mechanical wear and fuel usage are turned off. Tyre wear on. Damage and mechanical wear are off because there're still some small lag issues that can contribute to unavoidable crashes and there's a fuel usage bug.

Not specifically related to project cars but I just got an email from Fanatec about their new wheel base and an interesting tidbit that I've bolded here...

The new ClubSport Wheel Base V2 has many exciting new features!
Brushless servo motor for about 75% more power
No cogging (notchiness) at all. Nothing!
Optimized belt drive with ultra-low drag for a much wider spectrum of fine force-feedback effects
Super durable construction with a new cooling system, more and bigger ball bearings, as well as completely new sensors and electronics
DUAL HALL and DirectSensor technology with more than double the resolution
Multi-platform! Upgradeable to next generation gaming consoles when paired with optional steering wheels (in development)
Choose from a large selection of wheel rims of all popular racing styles. 11 models and growing!

Did I miss something? Last I heard, new gen consoles were a no go.

http://www.fanatec.com/eu-en/wheel-bases/clubsport-wheel-base-v2-eu.html

Fanatec is adding the new gen connection functionality to the actual wheels and not the base unit. Going forward this is a great idea and wish they would have thought about it sooner. They did say they have one consoles support and working on the second but didn't mention names. The one supported console will have a wheel out by the end of the year.

I am very interested to find out performance of pCARS with GTX 970 and FX8350.\

[lol, I currently have GPU below minimum, but game is playable with everything on minimum and 720p window]

Sounds familiar, I5-750 and AMD 5850 :P

Was playing the waiting game with my upgrade (pCARS + other next gen impact) and hoping for 20nm to arrive before this game was ready, but the 970/980 series might be good enough.

Oculus Rift CK1 prototype is confirmed to be 1440p and 90Hz.

Even GTX 970 will struggle to render pCARS in such demanding environment.

Xbone version probably "slightly" lower res :

"However, Lee did state that the PS4 and Xbox One (my video of the Xbox One version of the demo can be found here) versions of the game were both running at 60 frames per second, with the PS4 version managing 1080p and the Xbox One running at a slightly lower resolution (Lee did not say exactly what the resolution was, but commented that the Xbox One version’s resolution was still a work in progress, and resolution of the demo wasn’t necessarily representative of the completed game)..."

1012peee incoming.

Also they are currently running 24 cars on the track at 60fps on both XB1 and PS4, but apparently they can go higher so the game could have a lot more cars on the track than any of it's competitors. For MP though they might need to limit it, but they're at least going to have just as many as Forza or GT.

How did it feel compared to FM5?
Difficult to answer. On the XB1, the controls were garbage for me. I literally couldn't keep the car going in a straight line, which I think was mostly just being unable to lower the sensitivity. Cuz later I played on PC with a Shield controller and thought it was much better. But to compare it with Forza is hard cuz its been a while since I've played Forza and when I played PCars on the PC, it was with an Audi R18, which isn't the sort of car I spent a lot of time with in Forza.

So I dunno. It felt good. 'Close' would probably be my estimate, but it depends on how picky you are about these things.

Isn't that a bit of an issue on PC too? Many cars just feel very unstable.
