Helldivers 2 dev says next game will not be funded by PlayStation

Treason will be dealt with accordingly

This isn't new. Arrowhead made it quite clear that they wanted to become the next Bungie or Fromsoft about a year or so ago and that they did not want to be purchased

I respect that. I just hope they grow the studio enough to keep giving HD2 major updates. HD2 can still reach 100k+ on Steam when new content drops. It still has a great fanbase

Helldivers 2 dev promises next game will not be PlayStation exclusive or partnered

Sony, come on...

EDIT: Some context because it looks like the article is a little more inflammatory than the actual thing:
What a bunch of lies.

No Helldivers 2 dev ever 'promised next game will not be PlayStation exclusive or partnered' and never said 'there will be no more Playstation partnership resulting in one-console exclusivity'. These are lies made up by the butthurted fanboy Paul Tassi.

Arrowhead's CEO said instead that they are self funding their next game, which will start with a 'very, very small team' later this year and that 100% of them continue working in Helldivers 2. He said they are very happy with Sony, that will continue with Helldivers 2 for a 'loong' time and that they are open to work again with Sony in the future.

Here you have the receipts that this article is 100% bullshit, this is the full conversation with the whole context:

If Sony hadn't antagonized them so much and constantly interfered with their handling of the game (remember the PSN debacle? it was just a year ago), then maybe they would have had a better chance of keeping Arrowhead in their corner?

Sony actually cut them some slack and allowed them to drop the previously agreed PSN requirement when they were struggling during launch.

Good stuff. Although we got Helldivers 2 day one on PC, its good thast more people get to play their games

The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you. ❤️ The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we'll call 100% of those shots.

The supposed lack of exclusivity is a lie made up by Paul Tassi.

The Arrowhead CEO never said their next game won't be console exclusive, didn't say anything about exclusivities. The Arrowhead CEO said they'll continue focused on Helldivers 2 for a loong time and that are open to continue working with Sony in the future.

While at the same time a 'very, very small' team will start later this year to 'sloooowly' work in a 100% self-funded project.

Definitely some sour grapes between the two behind the scenes. Arrowhead probably got fed up with Sonys bullshit and decided to part ways.
They didn't decide to part ways.

What the Arrowhead CEO said instead is that will continue working in Helldivers 2 for a 'loooong' time, that are very happy with Sony and that are open to continue working with Sony in the future.

The self funded Arrowhead project -its CEO never said it won't be console exclusive, Paul Tassi also made that up in his article- is something they'll start later this year with a 'very, very small team' and that they will work on it 'slooooowly'.

If something they may be licking his balls for basically doubling the 1st party games revenue in half a decade, almost a year before they planned so.

And part of it being because he allowed Arrowhead to have a 5 years long delay with Helldivers 2 instead of cancelling it.

Maybe this is the reason of why the Arrowhead CEO just said they are very happy with Sony, that Arrowhead will be focused in working in Helldivers 2 for a 'looooong' time, and that Arrowhead is open to work with Sony in the future.

Honestly I doubt Xbox as a walled garden console exists by the time this self funded game releases. It will just be a matter of putting the PC version on the Xbox app. So nothing really changes.
Ironically, MS is by far the best case for a 3rd party publisher now if these devs don't self-publish. GP works well with live service games. MS puts their stuff on everything now and they have money for marketing and big events still. MS publishing anything is now the opposite of walled garden.

Gotta love seeing folks like Kenneth Haight Kenneth Haight getting a hard-on over this, as if Sony isn't basically benefitting for their work with Arrowhead from god knows how many years. :messenger_sleeping:
No hard on here. Just a funny observation. They both won and it's good to see an independent developer in all honesty.

They had this strong relationship with arrowhead from the first game yet purchased this pile of steaming garbage in firewalk that they believed was going to be the GaaS coming of christ. I only have a PS5 pro and have enough to play for sure, no complaints here but I can't help but wonder about the sunk cost in to GaaS this gen and the slower output. That's maybe just the way it is now. I have plenty in the backlog so I'm happy to be a cheapskate this year having went crazy the last couple of years.

Nah. I bet they want to avoid anything that requires a login. Also MS has done a very bad job of marketing their games the last 5 years or so.

Ah okay makes sense. So that game the small team is making is the one they can decide to not make an exclusive then?
Paul Tassi lied mading up that this self funded game won't be exclusive.

The Arrowhead CEO never said anything about it being exclusive or not. It's just a personal guess from Paul Tassi. The Arrowhead CEO didn't even say who will publish it. I posted above everything what the Arrowhead CEO said, you can read it.

I mean, maybe even they could make it console exclusive and ask Sony to publish it if they like it. Pretty likely the time it releases Xbox consoles won't exist, so...

Reading what he really said, sounds like Arrowhead already agreed with Sony will continue working in Helldivers 2 for a 'loooong' period of time, so pretty likely won't ask Arrowhead to start working in another game until several years in the future, and Arrowhead is open to work again in the future.

And meanwhile, Arrowhead (pretty likely will selfpublish) a self funded smaller side project. No drama involved.

We have to stop assuming that every developer wants to sell itself. Arrowhead literally stated that it has pride on being an independent studio.

LOL, Paul Tassi doing Paul Tassi things. This is a charged headline and it has nothing to do with being negative against Sony or not wanting to partner with them.

As a studio they want to try and get the most return by self publishing their next game.
These two companies are going to be tied at the hip for the foreseeable future imo.

A Bungie/MS situation if I ever saw one.

But Helldivers 2 isn't even a PS5 exclusive, so what changed ??
They made a lot of money with Helldivers 2 so will selfund a side project while they continue working in Helldivers during many years and are open to continue working with Sony in other games.

The Arrowhead guy never said anything about exclusivity, and never said they won't partner with PlayStation these parts are a lies from Paul Tassi, who wrote the article.

Helldivers 2 is a GAAS that is getting and will get continued support from years to come that is, very obviously, all funded by Sony. You need to explain your reasoning of 'burning bridges out' here.

As I said, there is no reason for them to say anything bad about Sony since they still are under contractual obligation to continue support of Helldivers. Once that gig is up they will go separate ways. These people are professionals. Not even From went on record talking nothing but love for Sony and their support of Demons Souls even after Shu publicly said it was crap.

But it's obvious something went down behind the scenes between Sony and Arrowhead that prompted Arrowhead to move on independently. I mean after such a tremendous success with HD2 it's weird they are announcing a split with Sony. I wouldn't be surprised if their relationship soured after the PSN sign in debacle on PC, which is where Helldivers has had its most success. It isn't the first time Sony fucks up their partner relationships, they have a proven track record with this. But from Arrowheads side they will continue to be professional and not burn bridges, because relationships can mend and partnerships can continue, even after there has been some bad blood. After all, it's just business.

They don't have any reason to publicly praise them, either, and you're missing that they still value that relationship even after that debacle. Sony supported the development of a sequel of a modest seller for 8 straight years.

They didn't anounce any split with Sony.

Sounds like that due to the big success they already agreed to continue supporting it for many years, (and who knows, probably even Helldivers 3).

After working 9 years in the game, (plus also in Helldivers 1 before it) I assume some people -specially the creative ones- may be already burned out and may want to do something different at least for a while or leave. So I assume gave them a side project that would be self funded with part of the Helldivers 2 profits while the bulk of the studio continues working in Helldivers.

Just taking a moment to say that I honestly, genuinely despise Paul Tassi's method of games "journalism". He is one of the worst in the industry, by far.

Just in case he's lurking around: I want him to read that. Can't block me here, kid.

The game is very based. Sony is weird if they will not fund Arrowhead, since this game was a success. Sony is obsess with GAAS and they will just leave arrowhead which was a success? This game was there golden goose. They rather waste there money on woke infested firewalk and bungie, and more ND remaster.

For real. Devs have said they're a small studio so they don't have all the manpower as larger ones to have a Pro patch out or cross-progression in a timely manner between fixes and content updates.

Sony should be assisting with the tech then, the game is a clear major success.

Invest more and be rewarded.

I do hope Sony will be wise to negotiate with them again since with all there live service obsession, with majority had failed, this is the only one with success. Me and my brothers, enjoyed this game. And the game is very based, none of that woke twisted gender ideology binary and misuse of pronouns crap. If Sony is still obsess with live service, this game should be there template on how to do it.
