They can't fix the story D: I hope you're not looking out for that.

There are immediate problems with the narrative structure of games like Destiny that make it extremely tough to tell a compelling tale that doesn't detract from the player's personal experience. it's almost intractable. it's not unique to Destiny by any stretch.

any good story bits we get from here on out will be equivalent to "good episodes" of a really poorly executed TV show

Yeah, I'm not expecting them to go back and fix it, but I'm still holding out hope that they can pull some kind of magic with the expansion packs and give them a decent story.

And I'd argue that Destiny's structure isn't actually a decent excuse for the story we got. I've played MMOs (not just SWTOR) that have had considerably better stories and storytelling than Destiny.

Has Bungie said anything about matchmaking coming to the daily/weekly nigthfull/missions? Not have it mandatory but an option would be nice. I really want to do the weekly but have no one to play with.

god damn I keep getting Ascendant Energy from the daily and no Shards. :|

I mean, Energy is fine too but I really would like to actually upgrade all of this armor I have sitting here fully leveled already.

Same, ever since I hit the limits for armour which require Shards all I keep getting is Energy. If I got the Shards instead all my armour would be 100%.

If you're interesting in talking about this a bit, I bet I can prove it to you! I've always heard of SWTOR (and to some extent The Secret World) as extreme exceptions to the rule when it comes to MMO storytelling. But it's not "MMO" exactly that makes the difference.

If you don't mind, what MMO plots would you consider good, and beyond that, what are the games you've played in general you consider to have the best stories?

Kind of jumping off of your statement, I look at Destiny as some sort of badly-executed intro to MMOs with a great implementation of a raid within a first person shooter.

However, I don't know who they're fooling thinking 3 raids is enough for 2 years.

I don't understand this game.

I'm up to around 80 hours. All my friends are currently preoccupied with FIFA, popping back on to Destiny every now and again.

It's frustrating and repetitive, I've done (nearly) everything, then done it again, then done it on a harder setting, then done it as a Bounty, then again as a Daily, then again for another Bounty and so on.

And yet it is utterly addictive.

I find the core experience, the actual gunplay, presentation and minute-by-minute gameplay utterly brilliant.

I'm constantly finding myself wanting something extra; another gun, more mats, more rep, more marks.

I find myself hooked, and yet at the same time worried about what's round the corner.

The core of this game is so brilliant; I just want to live up to what it can be.

WHY CAN'T I BE YOU!

I need just one more Ascendant energy, just one more to max out my ice breaker.... but the game keeps giving me ascendant shards.

I was on vacation last week so I missed most of the news about the Queen's Wrath stuff. Are the kill orders once a day for Legendary gear, or can I keep running them?

TOR's stories aren't good in the slightest save for the Imperial Agent and, to a lesser extent, the Sith Warrior class storyline.

Still though, I think Destiny had something going for it that was, sadly, shafted as far as narrative goes.

Yeah Shadow price looks like a really sweet rifle. Regarding snipers I have 2 legendary and one exotic so far.

The exotic: Ice breaker is CRAZY good, if you get it, never leave it behind!

I'd love to get an Ice Breaker. That would make my descission so much easier. I could just go for a Shadow Price and not worry about the Bad Juju as an option for my primary weapon.

VoG + 1 from the 1st expansion + 1 from the 2nd expansion.

If there's one thing that TOR failed to do, it was to have enough raids to keep people going.

Cool. PSN: Afrodeeziyak. Heading online now.

Currently, WoW is on the same end-game raid for about a year and a half now.

At least at the launch of an expansion you usually get 2 or 3.

I hope they add a bunch more strikes with expanded mechanical bosses (more like the current raid bosses).

I haven't played TOR, it's just something I usually hear.

I think Destiny's world-building and ancillary lore is compelling. great, even. but the mainline narrative, like many stories told in MMORPGs, is a complete non-starter.

there aren't even any named characters that have something to do with the plot! i'm serious right now. There's a Stranger, a Queen, a Queen's brother, a Speaker and "my ghost." holy crap why don't they have names. Cayde-6 and Xur are way more interesting to me than any of them and they don't even function into the narrative whatsoever.

ah but... the first expansion is december... the second is already announced; where do you get 2 years from?

SWTOR has great stories... but it does that with heavy cutscene use and class specific storylines that ignore the social aspects. I.E. Every Consular plays the exact same story where they're the hero. It really is Mass Effects style of story delivery inside of an MMO.

It's exceptional but it was also massively expensive since the heavy cutscene use and multiple stories (one for each class) meant more extensive VO work than had ever been done by an MMO before.

The Secret World's story isn't actually all that strong. What it succeeds at is creating a very intriguing atmosphere and having some really great quests that are a first for MMO's in that they require actual research into the various myths and conspiracy theories that the game engulfs itself in. They went so far as to lead players to websites outside of the game (both real and fake) to research in order to solve the puzzles and complete the quests. Animation is atrocious though and combat is standard MMO fare.

How long did progression take for TOR raids? People seem to be burning through VoG in less than a day or two so I don't know if three raids in two years will keep this game alive.

Need one more for Nightfall on XB1. We're level 27 and 28 Hunters, so a Warlock or Titan (defender?) would be nice.

i'd have preferred TSW just not even include combat :P guess the market can't really sustain a persistent world game like that though.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do a 3rd + 4th expansion bundle during 2015, or something.

I got 25 motes of light. I think I might get the cape with the deer head on it. I'm pretty much at the point where I can't really use any more rep. I'm rank 4 with the Vanguard and there's only 2 vendors that take Vanguard marks. I only need marks to buy weapons and an upgraded sparrow. I'll do PVP now and then, but I am very not interested in playing enough crucible to get enough rep or marks to buy anything, so I can't buy anything from FWC, NM, DO, or Crucible, so their rep is useless to me.

that thread is going swimmingly. just lovely

i'm not getting it:

but both of those areas are on earth and the first raid is on the moon? and those areas are INCREDIBLY glitchy in their current form

like this degree of unfinished

just, whatever, rage if you want I guess.
I agree, but that picture is a bit misleading. It only looks like that because he's outside the map, you can see the geometry in the area he's looking at is (pretty much) finished when he drops down into it.

Some of the most popular event content wasn't even in-game. Funcom hired a company that creates real world ARGs that the players participated in that rewarded them with in-game items. But yeah.. a system with so many puzzles and no combat would be a hard sell as an MMO I think. But that's why stuff like The Longest Journey exists.

A few days to a week and some change. The Nightmare Modes for operations (raids in TOR) were what took the longest. This was mainly because the mechanics were a hell of a lot tighter than the easier modes. (difficulties go from Story Mode, to Hard Mode, to Nightmare Mode).

Stuff like this is kind of the reason why I wish Bungie went ahead and made a full-fledged MMO. That way we'd be paying for constant content with a fleshed out community (provided Bungie could supply. Bioware almost failed miserably, redeemed themselves, then fucked up again).
