Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Welp... I ordered the Gigabyte 970, I guess I'll be able to enjoy it sometime next year!

Realistically it will probably be sometime in early to mid November, but if that's the case it might as well be sometime next year = P
I guess I'll just have to join the waiting club.

So I installed a new 980 in my system and it seems to be working fine. The only problem is I'm sure my old computer parts are a bottleneck for this beastly card. Here are my current specs:
Intel Core i5-760 (2.8GHz)
Corsair XMS3 DDR 8GB
Antec 750W Bronze 80 PSU

I'm thinking of upgrading to an i5-4690 (3.5GHz) and Z97 motherboard. Does that sound like a sensible choice? Should I upgrade the RAM and PSU or are those still OK?

Also, I'm thinking of getting an SSD and was eyeing the Crucial MX100 as the ideal price/performance option.

It's been about 4 years since I built my computer so I've been a bit out of the loop. Thanks for any advice you guys can give me.

I would get an i7-4790K that way you're guaranteed to get 4.0-4.4 GHz. I have already encountered an i5 4690K that wasn't stable at 4.2 GHz and 1.27V. I don't know if the i5s have a lower core frequency Gaussian curve, but I imagine they are considering Intel speed binned them a bit to differentiate the i5/i7.

But yes your CPU is the bottleneck for many games. 50% more core frequency and 40% gain in IPC can be had with i7-4790K. Maybe some newer instruction sets are used in software too.

What benchmarks or tools would everyone recommend to stress-test a GPU?

Since this is a fairly large investment for me, I want to make sure that the card doesn't break down for at least 4 years (which is the cycle I follow for upgrades).

How are the reference coolers in regard of cooling and sound?
Is it better to buy a graphics card with an reference cooler or an custom cooler (TwinFrozr, Windforce)?

Andy, when is Nvidia going to implement the entire control panel as a tab in Geforce Experience.

It's about time really. Having some options in one and not in the other and vice versa..is really cumbersome.

Twinfrozr for quiet, Windforce 3X for overclocking.

Doesn't matter which one really, both are quiet and don't get hot while overclocking. Windforce is a bit cooler though. I'm at 1543MHz and my highest temp is 66C with my fan still unnoticeable on my MSI card.

So just get whatever is in stock really.

Alright thanks for clearing that up, I'll get the Gigabyte tomorrow then, my retailer has them in stock.

Still troubleshooting my msi 970 - it has a noticeable buzzing that isn't the fans, and it happens immediately when under load. I've found a few others online that report they same problem.

Maybe it is the coil whine?
Sometimes the coils are isolated very poorly, because production is different for each card.

Furmark is what I use.

I've heard that could be it , but I need to look up some more coil whine examples . This is most definitely a buzzing , or a vibrating noise.

edit:"I definitely have a bit of coil whine with my MSI 970(only audible if I put my head near my PC). But I would never describe it as a 'buzzing' sound. "

maybe that is it and I just haven't experienced coil whine before then

Any loose screws causing wobbling?

Any loose screws causing wobbling?

screws was my first thought, then maybe some interfering cables. I've reinstalled it twice now being careful where I wrap cables and being sure to screw the card in tightly but the noise persists.

its so weird because it kicks in the moment a game starts, and it stops right if you quit or alt tab out

fuck Mordor's ultra textures, I still want (and am getting) a 970 :(

I've also got a very low pitched, low volume buzzing from my gigabyte 970 under full load. But it's only audible when I put my ear RIGHT next to the card. And I can only even hear it because I have all my fans (including hyper 212) at the lowest speeds 99% of the time.

And it's still a far cry from my evga 670 ftw which sounded like a floor fan on max speed under full load haha. I'd much, much rather have this almost inaudible buzz. I'm sure the loudness of that buzz varies greatly between people, though.

I think all of them have a bit of coil whine, but some of them seem especially bad. Like mine I can easily hear it above my case and CPU fans when I'm sat at my desk. My open back headphones do mostly drown it out, apart from when it's a menu/logo video with a unlocked FPS which causes enough screeching/buzzing/whining that even my headphones don't stop it.

I can't believe coil whine is still so widespread, it's so annoying. I have to RMA my Gigabyte 970, it distracts me too much. What's the point of even trying to build a silent system; fan noise is actually tolerable, pleasant even, but buzzing/squealing... blech.

My previous 780 GHz buzzed too, but only so lightly I literally couldn't hear it without putting my ear to the card. My 970's is louder, however.

How many fps are you guys pushing when the whining starts? Sometimes at really high fps that happens, just lock it down to something like 100 see if that helps.

Yeah indeed. Honestly, my case and cpu fans aren't that quiet, but I don't mind the noise. It's constant, doesn't change, and is just there. The coil whine though, it just gets on your nerves a bit. Especially because it's always changing pitch depending on what it's rendering/FPS/load.

I'm getting it at 60FPS on games which are stressing my GPU. So like Rome 2 for example, at Max settings, 60FPS that was causing it. I downsampled Fable Anniversary with it locked at 60FPS and that caused it.

Like I wouldn't be as bothered if it was only at ridiculously high frame-rate, and it is a lot louder under those circumstances. However, the fact I'm getting it during normal gaming scenarios is just annoying in all honesty.

I have 2 reference EVGA 980s and I can tell you that I'm running 1365mhz cores boosting to over 1500mhz on air pretty easily. 100% stable.

I bought the EVGA superclocked version and I also have it to 1367. That's about the highest I can get it stable, but others have had more luck.

Why are the MSI 970's so popular? I thought the go to were EVGA and Gigabyte?

Good cooler, turns off the fan completely at idle so even less noise (but you really don't hear it while it's on at idle anyway) and just overall really quiet.

Gigabyte is also very popular and haven't seen any complaints about them.

EVGA is not as good as the others at the moment (but not bad), they do make a bit more noise that some people find annoying. Heard there will be a bios update to fix the standard fan profile to make it a bit more quiet, I'm not 100% sure about that though. They do have their great step-up program though and good costumer support from what I hear.

And complaints about coil whine is not limited to any one manufacturer, they all have it to some extent usually but mostly it's not noticeable unless you have unlocked framerate in a menu that makes it spit out 2000 fps or something.

Since this shit is sold out EVERYWHERE and it doesn't seem like more are coming in until November, I bit the bullet and got one of these from a local Fry's.

$630 for a reference 980. Fail.

I hope it OCs well. I might SLI it if I can find my damn modular PCI-E cable.

God I hope when I'm finally able to test these damn cards out I don't have any serious coil whine issues. Having 2 cards just makes my chances all the higher. When will old age set in so I can't hear those high pitches? Me and my ageless hearing.

All my other bits should be here by the weekend, except for the god damn card.

I'm going to annoy MicroCenter and call them every day until then...possibly drive down there since it's like...half a mile from my home.

Same for me, especially I hear the coil whine on graphic cards and the power supply.
I hope my new GTX 970 from GigaByte won't have this high pitch coil whine.

Thx for the response, that's helpful to know cheers!

Think I finally got a stable overclock on my Gigabyte GTX 970 after having some time to play with it, anything higher/any lower voltage locks up Firestrike completely.

Based on the scores I've seen throughout the thread, I'm pretty content.

You should try flipping it if it's sold out.

Try lowering your memory to 400 and see if 150 on core clock works.

What does your gpu clock max at? Unless it's in that pic and I don't see it haha

Believe it was 1490 MHZ.

Try lowering your memory to 400 and see if 150 on core clock works.

I actually tried just that earlier and got lower scores. I'll probably play with it some more, like I might need more voltage if I increase the clock further.

Edit: I don't think I can get it more optimal than I already have it. Tried 400 memory and 150 core clock, with max voltage and it couldn't even finish Firestrike. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't totally satisfied with my performance so far though. This card is a fucking beast.

So initial impressions of the 980 are quite disappointing coming from a 780Ti.

I only tried Unigine Valley at this point, and the following at the best scores my cards have posted on Extreme HD settings.

780Ti max OC

78.7 avg fps
score of 3291

GTX 980 max OC(1425mhz core, 7.5Ghz memory)

78.4 avg fps
score of 3279.

Hoping this might be a Valley quirk and performance is better in games and other benches, because it's pretty sad that I actually LOST a tiny bit of performance after going through all the hassle of getting this thing.

Anybody have scores I can compare against? For both tests, the cards were paired with a 2500k@4.7Ghz, and 8GB 1866Mhz ram.

Performance should be a bit better in games, and I think I remember hearing Valley being messed up atm for 980 owners.

Another thing to remember is the 700 series has had tons of driver improvements and is basically as efficiently coded as possible at this point. The 900 series should (will) see some decent performance gains as drivers mature.

But I feel you... you really just side-graded. However you should have done more research before buying if you are truly that surprised.

That's a bad ass mem oc. I have same card and got 150/150 working. Still tweaking memory.

What resolution did you run the valley test at? I assume the rest was default...

I tested the 980 on 344.11 drivers. Downloading the beta 344.16 to see if anything improves.

Those 780Ti scores were recorded from the launch in November of last year, so I'm not actually taking into account driver improvements over the months. Who knows, it might have scored better if I tested it again yesterday.

I always knew there wasn't going to be much of a difference between the cards before buying, but didn't think the 980 would actually perform worse. Figured it would be around 10% better, especially overclocked.

Default 1080p for all tests.

Interesting, the Titan Black I got rid of in favor of the SC GTX 980 was nowhere near that fast. It scored right around 3000 coupled with a 4930K @ 4.5Ghz. The 980 (overclocked) scores about 3300, and I'm guessing that's just about what to realistically expect from them with the reference cooler.
