I fucking love Destiny's lore, setting and atmosphere/feeling but I could not care less about an overarching story.
agreed 100%. destiny provides a rather interesting, intriguing and awesome-looking sci-fi universe in which to kill many, many things with guns. it does this well. looking for narrative stimulation beyond that is where it gets bad.

Again, I'd bring up the ad. Is there voiceover proclaiming the need for Guardians to fight back the Darkness with Light? Or a melacholic near-detached portrayal of character-building as to "what came before" you pick up the controller, as in ODST's live action trailer?

No. It's three friends blasting "Immigrant Song" by Zeppelin and killing aliens while giving each other shit and traveling the solar system. That's Destiny.

I just fully upgraded a Pocket Infinity...holy crap that auto fire mode. The thing is like a completely different weapon. If this pops up in your exotic bounties *Grab It!

Looking for more people who are at Atheon in Vault of Glass. We are 2 so far. Minimum lvl 28 or 27 if you are experienced and know the mechanics of the fight.

PSN: samme195
message me if interested.

Just got my seventh exotic bounty. It's the second one I threw away since they are repeats. I turned in four bounties of different types (3 crucible, 1 queen) at once. I only turned in four since I still have one my other exotic bounties active.
Lol, that's a lot. I just got my 4th exotic bounty the other night and I chose the Invective one. I'm pretty sure this will be the last one I do and I'm not really in a hurry for this either. I've got 4 exotic weapons already and it's not like they are better than legendary weapons yet. Plus, the bounties are a pain in the ass to complete. I'd rather just continue leveling up my vanguard marks and buying the guns I actually want. Or, just have the cryptarch give me shit when I turn in engrams which so far he has mostly neglected to do.

I'd rather do crazy bounties for a large number of ascendant shards or something. I don't need any more blue items at all. I've vaulted enough for the two characters I haven't even made yet. Just give me materials for upgrading the stuff I have. Every single legendary armor and weapon (and some exotic ones too) are ready to upgrade but are waiting until I have enough mats). This drives me nuts.

If you're interesting in talking about this a bit, I bet I can prove it to you! I've always heard of SWTOR (and to some extent The Secret World) as extreme exceptions to the rule when it comes to MMO storytelling. But it's not "MMO" exactly that makes the difference.

If you don't mind, what MMO plots would you consider good, and beyond that, what are the games you've played in general you consider to have the best stories?

Well, I'd like to preface my statements by saying that I'm a characters-first reader/player when it comes to story. I much prefer a tale rich in characters and light on plot complexity to the alternative. So Destiny essentially fails by my criteria before we even come to any consideration of the plot, which is actually somewhat interesting in places (Rasputin especially).

That said, I'd point to City of Heroes/Villains as another MMO in addition to the two you named that offers much more interesting story beats than Destiny. There wasn't much to start with, of course, but even in the beginning there were interesting characters and plot lines. They also later went back and totally redid all the starting content, offering players a ton of choices in what quest lines they'd like to follow, some of them quite good. But I suppose it's somewhat unfair to compare Destiny to the final product CoX became.

Speaking more generally, while most MMOs are known for an unobtrusive story, it's generally much more fleshed out than Destiny's. When you complete a quest, you'll generally get some sort of story-based acknowledgement of that fact, even if it's just a few lines of text. More impressive achievements will generally receive larger, more elaborate response, up to an including cutscenes. Destiny... doesn't really do that. Consider The Dark Beyond. You go to the Moon (apparently quite an achievement at that point, since traffic has by and large ceased), you find a dead Guardian (who really should have been named, btw), fight off a massive wave of baddies, and return with his Ghost to tell the Speaker the Hive is planning an invasion. You get absolutely zero story acknowledgement of this. Not a single line of dialogue. For a story-based player, there is no payoff.

No, as to the last point, favorite stories? Well, that's tougher :P Halo is one of my favorites (which is why I'm so disappointed in Destiny), Mass Effect, Rise of Legends (which nobody but me remembers :P), Dragon Age, City of Heroes (again, some of the later stuff was fantastic), KOTOR, and Jade Empire probably give a decent sample. I like colorful characters and flavorful worlds more than I like deep, meaning-laden plots, but Destiny doesn't really provide any of that.

Kind of jumping off of your statement, I look at Destiny as some sort of badly-executed intro to MMOs with a great implementation of a raid within a first person shooter.

However, I don't know who they're fooling thinking 3 raids is enough for 2 years.

There's probably going to be additional expansions after the first two.

Got another exotic bounty today. Now I have Thorn, Bad Juju, Pocket Infinity, and Invective. Haven't completed the Bad Juju bounty yet, guess it'll have to wait till next weekend.

It amazes me that so many people have been getting exotic bounties and legendary drops. I have yet to get either. This game plays favorites!

Edit: oh, and Bungie's claim that the PVP is balanced when it's not Iron Banner is utter bullshit. Bullshit.

Has Bungie said anything about matchmaking coming to the daily/weekly nigthfull/missions? Not have it mandatory but an option would be nice. I really want to do the weekly but have no one to play with.

I hope matchmaking comes for those modes soon and I don't even understand why they weren't included in the first place.

A few days to a week and some change. The Nightmare Modes for operations (raids in TOR) were what took the longest. This was mainly because the mechanics were a hell of a lot tighter than the easier modes. (difficulties go from Story Mode, to Hard Mode, to Nightmare Mode).

Stuff like this is kind of the reason why I wish Bungie went ahead and made a full-fledged MMO. That way we'd be paying for constant content with a fleshed out community (provided Bungie could supply. Bioware almost failed miserably, redeemed themselves, then fucked up again).

Hm yeah. Coming from FFXIV where we're about to get our third raid in just a little over a year (raids that take a week or two for the hardcore progression groups and then months to a year for more causal players) I have my doubts raids alone will keep the endgame "community" afloat in Destiny.

I agree, but that picture is a bit misleading. It only looks like that because he's outside the map, you can see the geometry in the area he's looking at is (pretty much) finished when he drops down into it.
i see what you mean about the interior ground level where there are acutal enemies. it's "built" but unfinished and untested. there are defintely entire structural elements that need to be locked down let alone polished in the build we have in game

OPEN THE DOORS BUNGIE
Not really, IMO. The thing I loved about Guardians of the Galaxy was the characters and their interactions, which is Destiny's weakest area by far.
That's the thing, I know exactly what he's saying. YOU'RE the characters and your interaction with your friends are their interactions.

It's not a game like it's about the Guardians of the Galaxy, it's a game like you ARE the Guardians of the Galaxy, which, ha, oh.

I can't speak for you, but my interactions with my friends are a lot less entertaining than that :P

The two Legendary Engrams I received came out as Legendary items surprisingly. Mark of No Tomorrow and the Zombie Apocalypse WF47 machine gun.

The mark is nothing for my Hunter, though with that and Helm of Inmost Light, the Titan class will be my next character to progress. As for the ZAWF47, I already have Super Good Advice, though the Void damage should come in handy for the Raid when I dive into that.

Not too shabby. Just need a Legendary/Exotic for my Special Weapons.

You know what, people can say whatever they want about the game, everyone has their own likes and opinions, but this is me every time I play this game as my more and more awesome looking Hunter

Destiny is a fun game
for me

I haven't played TOR, it's just something I usually hear.

I think Destiny's world-building and ancillary lore is compelling. great, even. but the mainline narrative, like many stories told in MMORPGs, is a complete non-starter.

there aren't even any named characters that have something to do with the plot! i'm serious right now. There's a Stranger, a Queen, a Queen's brother, a Speaker and "my ghost." holy crap why don't they have names. Cayde-6 and Xur are way more interesting to me than any of them and they don't even function into the narrative whatsoever.

Don't forget Rahool.

I wish friend requests weren't borked so I could at least use destinylfg to try and get a hard mode VoG going.

Hey my ps4 name is toddv360. I'm a level 29 looking for others who want to do the hard raid. If you ever need another person count me in. Feel free to send a friend request if psn ever starts working right lol

Make it 0/14 on legendary engrams being legendary or exotic items. Hopefully I get to a cool 15 before Rahool is replaced by his much smarter twin brother on Tuesday.
