Mario Kart 8 is not a 3DS game. I wouldn't look too deep into this. Toon Zelda and Isabelle aside, all of these characters appear in Smash Bros.

Between new hardware, kisekae plates, themes and Amiibos Nintendo is going to clean up this holiday in Japan.

I didn't really put too much thought into how this all plays together but seeing it together the customization aspect on the New 3DS is incredible. It's seems like it'll be rare to find two that are themed exactly alike.

This site is really fun! You can make your own plate combinations and there is tons of info on each theme; every plate seems to have a corresponding one save for the special MonHun ones. Each theme page even goes into detail on the music, sound effects, etc. My wallet is not ready!
