The show needs a bad boy. Since Mako became a law enforcer and became less emotional they realized their younger generation won't have anybody to oogle over/relate to because adults and rules are icky.

That's a tough one. I feel like flashbacks shouldn't count. But if it's like...a vision of Toph (not her physically on screen, but a vision of her)...that should count no? I dunno.

Didn't expect Aang to beat a deadbeat father.
Up to episode 8 of season 2. Not sure if I like the flashback with Wan, it all seemed too fast-paced.
Toph was also a shit tier mother.
lol the original Gaang were abusive parents in the making. So sad.

The wetsuit things look so out of place. Some weird futuristic anime stuff.
Zuko seems to be a pretty good father "so far". Also helps when you have someone like Iroh to consult with.

Aang's parental flaws doesn't seem off to me though. Like if they HAD to give him some flaws, then they did it right IMO.
I dunno. Aang was a pretty gentle/caring person. It's still hard to reconcile that he would be such a cold parent to his other children. From a plot perspective it makes sense. I. He's the Avatar. II. He has to focus on training the only Air bender left (his son), so he had the entire weight of re-building his people on his shoulder.
BUT, I just can't accept that Aang would be that neglectful. Hell, I can't see Katara accepting that. She was a tough as hell person, and would not put up with Aang doing that. She would have chewed his ass out for being absent from his other kids. The whole things feels off to me. I have no issue with Aang being flawed. But I just can't imagine these specific characters doing this.
Book 3 spoilers? But I guess I could see that, given how Lin turned out.
I actually like that they did that. That episode where they were looking for Ikki is my favorite of the season so far.
Under the context of their younger selves, I'd agree. It makes sense to me, as they grew older they took on their respective responsibilities. I think Katara would understand, and her relationship with Kya and Bumi are probably stronger because of it.
I might wanna throw Gandhi in. Great guy, but had some problems with his children. There is one thing being a spiritual father and another to be an actual father while still being a spiritual one.
Katara would understand Aang's responsibilities, sure. But I don't think she would accept Aang being THAT absent of a father. If the children feel that hurt as adults, surely they must have been feeling really bad as children (always wondering why dad isn't home, or why he only spends time with their brother). He could have had his responsibilities and still made sure to spend time with his kids. They even make a point to say, he only took Tenzin out when traveling to the fun places Aang visited as a kid. Why not the other kids as well? Even if Aang was using it to teach Tenzin bending, he could have done so with the other kids watching or being apart of it.
Ghandi also didn't have Katara to put a foot up his ass. The whole thing doesn't jive IMO.
EDIT: Well, you could argue that "people change" as they get older. And that is true. Logically, you could argue this. But this is why I find this kind of storytelling problematic (to take past established characters, and then start writing plot that makes major changes to them, without us actually seeing those changes, or having enough depth to explain why the changes exist). I totally get the reasons why Aang would be busy (as I said above). But just the way the plot is presented to us, it just doesn't sit well with me at all. I like the plot with Tenzin and the kids itself. I just don't really care for how they presented it with integrating past characters.
I dunno, this will never sit entirely well with me. Is what it is. I guess if you accept people change as they get older though, it certainly makes it easier to accept the drastic comparison between the characters in ATLA we knew, and what we are being told they ended up becoming (off screen). Sure.

But it's realistic tbh. It's very ordinary that people who seem like very good, level headed, reasonable people in their teenage years usually become more hardheaded in various ways when they are adults.
I'm just saying I don't like it from a storytelling perspective. Although I still don't agree Katara would put up with it.

If you butcher a show you can throw the small pieces around as to your pleasure.
Zuko was probably the best parent, that parent that has been though some rough stuff so they have the most patience with you because they have the most context on how not to be a bad parent.
That's a fair point. I guess I'm just not a fan of telling story for established characters off screen. Especially if it involves a major shift in personality/morality. I'm more okay with action, but when you get to personal changes then it rubs me the wrong way. Even if logically it makes sense.
I guess it's why I'm weary of time jumps as a story telling device. They can be used really effectively. But I also hate when time jumps make major shifts in charcters personality/morality as I feel it cheats the audience and feels jarring. Just a personal preference. While I still think it's strange Katara put up with it, I can agree with everyone and say it's not illogical. Just a subjective opinion why i wasn't feeling it. *shrugs*
Although I did like the plot from the kids perspective. It provided good material for Tenzin and his siblings.

Well Book 1 is good. Book 2 is mostly awful. Book 3 is great and reaches ATLA level of quality. And Book 4 isn't out yet. So if you hated Book 1 right out the gate, and you will probably hate Book 2 for half of it...
Maybe don't watch it lol This series is very rough and up and down. Does it get better? Yeah. But it's a really rough journey to that point.

The outfits aren't that bad, even through they do look kind of like something from a futuristic anime or such indeed. XD
And eh Book 2 might have been a mess, but where there was some really crappy parts, there was also some great parts, especially in the second half. Plus skipping it would be like having a big hole in the series.

She deserves more screen time. It´s really sad that Zuko´s kids have not been featured, and showing 2 minutes of his son is nothing. Sokka is a big mystery, and i want to know more about his adult life and his family. No, he and Toph did not get together.

Yeah, Kya is a great character, but doesn't get enough time. This shows biggest problem is that it has WAY too many characters, and not enough time to spread it out among them. I mean, it's crazy to think we have Kai and Opal and Su added to the mix going into Book 4. Like holy fuck.
And we didn't even have enough time as it was for Bumi, or Kya...let alone Asami (who is a main main character). I just get a headache thinking of how large this cast is, and how they try to juggle their screentime.

Yeah man all of the characters would be GREAT.... Like f****** amazing if this were a much longer series. I mean comparing this to Naruto, there are a TON of side characters in that series, and only a tiny fraction of them I find interesting enough to actually enjoy segments that are more focused on them.
Legend of Korra has more side characters than they should be able to handle, yet all of them, just from what we have seen of them, I find interesting and would like segments that focused on them more.... But that's just impossible given the 12-14 episode per season format.

I don´t think there will to introduce and feature many characters which is sad, since these characters like Toph, Soka and Zuko´s kids, should have been introduced before and elaborated upon at some point. To put so much in the last season will definitely rob some characters of developing no doubt since there won´t be time to flesh all these characters out.

Yeah....they've already gone out of their way to to show Aang as a deadbeat father, and Toph as a corrupt/awful parent. What makes people think that Sokka didn't have a one night stand with Toph? Or that he even stayed together with Suki?
Really, all they have to do is allude to it or briefly mention it without going into detail. They pretty much have already shown they are willing to use time off screen to make major shifts in characters. So why would we rule out Sokka hooking up with Toph?
