PS3 Question - Why is Gran Turismo 5 needing 27 updates consecutively?

I've been given a PS3 for a while and have been working through games such as Ni No Kuni, Metal Gear Legacy, Last of Us etc. Thought I'd give Gran Turismo 5 a go since it's in the pile.

Now I understand that the games are old at this point and all of them have updates since features have been taken offline or new content was added, patched etc etc. MGS 4 for example had a 700mb download that takes out MGO and patches a bunch, but just a nice single update.

Gran Turismo 5 on the other hand is the first game I have got to that needs consecutive updates and 27 of them to boot. And they are not small either.

Why does it need to do this, and why is it considered reasonable on a console? I was kind of just expecting to hop in within 5 minutes tops but instead I'm at the 4 hour marks and only 66% through at update 12/27

For fucks sake don't buy GT6, you'll expire before it finishes updating.

I don't know why they use such a bollocks updating system. I only let it slide because updates usually equal new free content.

I'm not sure if this is specifically a first-party problem or what. But I just had a similar experience with God of War: Ascension. Booted it up a couple of weeks ago, and there were six or seven updates that had to download. Multiple gigs. Had to leave it running for hours.

Because it is so painful to go through, you will just go out and buy academy edition that has it all ready to go.

Lots of fixes but also lots of free content. I'm guessing you didn't buy the new GT5 spec versions because they already have that installed iirc

Not sure there's much reason to complain anymore. PS4 has fixed this problem and ps3 is clearly too old to be changed. What's done us done.

It's because dlc and stuff adds itself via patches especially for online games so you don't have "compatibility packs"or segmented online.

Having to go through so many updates bugs me for any PSN download on PS3.

I have no idea why, after a certain point, they don't just roll all the updates for PSN games into one download and make that be the default file you download.

They can keep separate updates available behind the scenes for any consoles that have versions that aren't yet updated to the latest, but if you download a fresh copy, it should just have everything already included.

I still remember the dozens of consecutive updates I had to go through for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. Those were dark times.

They're playing it now. That's why they're complaining; because it's a thing they're experiencing which is particular to how the game does updates.

Or any online at all...

Gran Turismo 6 had a lot of patches and installing too. After all of those reviews about a snappier, easier to use product...5 hours of installing and patching.

Sorry PS3, your games were good, but I'm so glad that I don't have to go through that anymore.

Are you serious, bruh?

I have a 30 MB/sec connection and the other day I had to download Dragons Dogma and GT 6 updates, Dragons Dogma was 12GB, GT6 update was 7GB, it took 30 hours to download and install.

Im not sure what it is, Im guessing the HDD in my launch Ps3 must be pretty slow.

Anyway, if you dont want to deal with updates, just press circle when the update screen shows up, most of them are probably online patches that you might not care about. A lot of it is free though, so its up to you.

PD are a joke when it comes to their update system. I haven't touched GT6 for a while and wanted to play a few races. I turned on the PS3 and was greeted with a pop-up telling me a bunch of saves, system update and two GT6 updates were uploaded/downloaded. Nice I thought. I only have to let it install the patches. Lol, it needed TWO hours to install them. After the installation another update needed to be downloaded.... After all that crap I turned off the PS3.

GT5 is an ever expanding living world. How else could they get you the experience you want, no deserve without patches? You should be grateful for Polyphony digital gracing your PS3 with patches each time you turn it on.

The biggest frustration is you can't pick and choose the updates. GOW: Ascensions had gigabyte patches for the multiplayer which i had no intentions of playing and yet i had to download.

I wish the patches were organised into:

  1. Required
  2. Single Player Only
  3. Multiplayer Only
  4. All

That way you can decide what to install depending on what component of the game you are playing.

This is a PS3 issue where it has to go through and install each and every update at a time. A game like GT5 which went through a ton of updates will take a very long time to update if you're starting from scratch and don't have the spec version which includes those updates already.

GT6 takes even longer because of their install process. Hopefully they've addressed installing patches with the PS4.

Or you can just let it auto update overnight or something.

Actually my biggest request would have been a simple warning and change log so I know what is actually going on. MGS4 forces the update but it was at least a single amount and update rather than GT5 having NO final size, just multiple hundreds of MB to download and an indicator of n/27. Also, at least Metal Gear then gave a change log at the end so I knew what the changes were / content was removed so I wouldn't get further confused. Hoping GT5 will at least let me know what to expect, I figure online capabilities must be gone at this point.

Just wait until you upgrade to GT6 and get to then install every one of those patches a second time once you get in-game :D

At least PD consistently update their games with tons of new features and content for free.

Another interesting bit, after using the install option on GT5 plus the updates, it takes almost 30GB from your HDD, it was amazing when I finally deleted it all.

Still less than TLoU on PS4...

It was 14GB when I had installed on my console (I deleted last December), maybe they changed something with the last patch.

This is amazing. 7 hours later, I finally have the updates installed and launch the game to find that an installation is recommended and will take another 25mins. Just fantastic.

I had the exact same experience you're having last year when I bought my ps3. It was especially jarring coming from pc gaming where steam patch automatically and with my internet I can download and install pretty much any game in under an hour. Made me wonder why people say console are plug and play and so much simpler than pc gaming.
