Umm.

Prior to this change legendary engrams had a better than average chance of turning into a blue item (roughly twice the chances of turning into a blue item), some of which were ascendant materials. Now, it can only turn into a purple item, including ascendant materials. without data, we have no idea if the chances of a legendary engram turning into ascendant materials is higher or lower than before but I imagine it probably isn't higher in total, but is higher compared to your chance of getting a legendary weapon or armor piece, simply as a result of having fewer total items to roll against (all of them being decent) compared to the way it used to be.

I wasn't being serious, just a bit cynical. I had a sample size of all of 2 legendary engrams that turned into ascendant materials after all lol

Of course. The overall drop rates for purples has to stay the same if they want speed of progression to stay the same. This patch has always been just a psychological improvement rather than a tangible one. (Besides the improved strike rewards)

Summary:
With this patch, we address some widely-discussed concerns with how Engrams are earned and claimed. Strikes have become more rewarding, and the rewards gained from them are more predictable. Also affected is the rotation of maps that appear in the Crucible.

Cryptarch
Legendary (purple) engrams will always produce a Legendary quality item or higher
Note: Legendary engrams that exist in your inventory will change to Rare quality items when the patch is applied. However, decoding these engrams will still produce the same results as before
Rare (blue) engrams will always produce a Rare quality item or higher
Chance for Legendary gear increased
Materials: Ascendant Shards and Ascendant Energy promoted to Legendary quality (from Rare quality)

Rewards
Rare (Blue) and Legendary (Purple) Engram drops added to the potential rewards for:
Vanguard: Tiger Strike Playlist
Daily Heroic Missions (first time per day)
Weekly Heroic Missions (first time per week)
Known issues
When selecting a higher difficulty for daily missions, XP Bonus not show in the reward display
You will still get the XP bonus, you just won't see it in the UI

Crucible
Reduced time limit on Bastion and First Light in Control and Clash from 15 to 12 minutes, bringing them in line with non-vehicle maps in those playlists
Lowered weighting on Bastion and First Light in Control and Clash so they appear less often in those playlists

Mu hahaha, so I've did the bounty for pocket infinity yesterday, got one for invective and did Juju. Now I have hard light, all within the last week after getting shit since launch.

So after saving 22 blue engrams untill the patch came, I finally put them in Cryptarchs hand.

Those 22 gave me:
1 Strange coin
2 mote of lights
1 legendary chest armo
A whole bunch of rare crap

The cryptarch rose 2 levels from it, and from the two packages I got 1 legendary engram which turned into a legendary shotgun, and 3 blue engrams which turned into rare crap.

Bastion needs work done. That map has some terrible spawn points and general flow.

First Light is alright, but sometimes it turns into team snipers and becomes very very boring/slow.

ahaha, oh, I see where you're coming from now. actually, if you consider the odds that a legendary decrypt might occupy the same slot of an equivalent/better item you already had, the odds of purple engrams "becoming shards" has skyrocketed lol

Same happened for me. Crap for two weeks then Gjallarhorn, Suros Regime, Pocket Infinity, Invective, Super Good Advice and have choice for Thorn/Bad Juju that I haven't made yet. Plus I got the raid chest piece and raid Sparrow on my first completion. Plus about 5 other legendary weapons. I feel pretty good about my gear despite never getting an exotic drop.

Yeah I mean I don't have a choice! It's really fucking hard to not play Destiny right now. But at the same time the Giants' season is on the line tonight! It's win or go home! Major butt-puckerage incoming. Having your emotions invested into a sports team has it's ups and downs.

LOL, yeah I sympathize! I don't follow the Tigers as close as I used to growing up but being a Detroit Lions fan for many years has often painful, especially when they start a season well.
