This is EXACTLY what I think happened to Kuvira since Season 3. She probably started out just a regular guard with a strong sense of justice. She probably showed enough competence for Suyen to promote her to high rank, giving her more and more power until it slowly corrupted her. I think Kuvira's story is going to be very much a "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" kind of thing.

I like how someone had to point out the bandits were working for Kuvira, like it wasn't totally obvious from her evil smirk and general evilness.
She'll use them to attack states/towns, and then come in as the hero. After last season I don't have any hope for bad guy motivations anymore.

omg adorable
so I finally got to watch the episode... and while I don't find it to be a bad episode... I feel the whole bolin situation is a little stupid... especially with the air nation stretched so thin I can't really think of a reason why bolin wouldn't be with opal helping her when all that was given was he is doing what he is currently doing because he is "helping people" the exact same thing he could be doing with his GF without making it a long distance relationship :/
I mean heck... having an earth bender going around with the air nation people, to help them would help the villagers trust them, and he could aid in reconstruction. Thus I feel it's all just done for absolutely pointless drama :/

I don't think she was behind the original bandits attacking the town. Just the ones interfering with the airbenders.
The poisoning has clearly left her weakened both mentally and physically. She seems thinner and doesn't seem like she has as much muscle mass as before. Its also highly likely she hasn't fought for like 3 years so she is out of shape.

while the nations were at peace thanks to the previous avatar after avatar Voltra's passing the nations started focusing their sites on colonizing space. now that Gundan has come of age his goal is to help the nations make life is space as harmonious as possible... not only is balance on the planet needed this time, but even far beyond.

I thought it was a great way to start out the new season.
For now can support what Kuvira is doing even if some people in charge of provinces are not fond of how she's doing thing, she's bringing the whole kingdom together and some times you got to ruffle feathers to do it. Sadly as some said she's likely going to go down the route of having good intentions but letting it consume her leading her to push too far. Hence the inevitable war with the Metal Clan since they were on what was Earth Kingdom land too. Won't help that the prince is someone who is the type of problem the Kingdom had before which will leave to her deciding he's too much like his grandmother to rule and the whole thing will happen again. Of course this will lead to her being taken down.
Poor Bolin, felt for the guy. Being in relationships can be tricky.
Mako and Asami sure did seem a bit off look wise. Pointy chins? Hair styles? Not sure.
Korra is still fighting back to the world of recovery. She's rather smart, she threw herself into the ring to test her abilities and currently.....she's not at a good place. She's suppose to be the avatar, but being unable to win such fights must be a bitter pill to swallow after being so confined and having to watch others do her "duty".

Finally coming around with the first episode. Pretty good opening in my opinion, even if it was somewhat slower than the last one. Even so, Kuvira with that bending demonstration has showed she is pretty capable of exerting her power and influence. It even brought Azula to my mind, although 13 episodes may be too little for such complexity of character.
The Air Nation has shown that their numbers are their fatal flaw, and of course Kuvira is going to exploit that. It's pretty telling that she controls the vast majority of the continent, and I believe she is going to make a movement towards Republic City - something that it's going to involve every major power as the trailer showed us. Would that even include the spoiled prince or is he going to be in the sidelines, possibly (or forcefully) abdicating in favor of Kuvira's intentions?
As the end of the episode presented, Korra is in a dark place. A complete flipside to the proud, powerful Avatar she has always appeared to the people, and what people wanted since the end of Book 1. The next episode probably is about what she has been doing, and considering her condition during the swamp scenes is possible that we're getting there as soon as next episode. Maybe the stinger is in the middle or at the end of Episode 3, and whatever happens there is going to have repercusions in her sight of the Avatar's role in the world.

Little disappointed this wasn't an hour premiere like the last seasons but I liked the episode. Kuvira is straight up evil looking and her soldiers' helmets sort of resemble the nazi helmets. Still very good premiere, can't wait for next Friday!

I found that very funny because I understand why somebody in her situation could be irritated. I know she's not mad to the point of break-up with him, just irritated/having a rough patch because he's hanging out with people she's currently mad with, and that makes her mad with him.
But when he's giving food to the hungry, smiles at her with a very innocent looks and she walks away pissed off I couldn't help but laugh a bit. I mean jesus, I don't know what else you can expect a guy to do to get good karma lol
She can't blame Bolin for following orders though. She asks him to stay and help, but considering that he's in the military he can't just not pay attention to his superior officer when he still sees that they're doing good. She and the audience knows that Bolin is only doing this to help people and he has the innocent heart of a child of being good, it's just that life isn't black and white when you're in the military. I like that they put this couple in this position. We have both sides of being helpful, and eventually we'll find BALANCE (tm) in the end.

It's... his orders? He's still doing good out there and wants to help people. Nothing much he can do outside of quitting which depending on the situation he doesn't feel like he has to do because he hasn't seen the bad side of Kuvira. Again, the morality at this point from him is not being questioned, she even says that largely she's mad because he's hanging with them.

Bolin basically joined the Mercy Corps. Lots of people go do that to grow up for the people they love or because they feel it's the place where they can do the most good. Bolin is idealistic, he probably loves that he can give food to people while also working toward a grand, unifying solution and doesn't just want one without the other.
It seems to me like they are using mercs ( bandits) to get people to join with whatever weird government thing they got going on.
I would like to see the time line on how long he has been there, because if its years. Either he is a complete idiot ( which is completely possible) , or he is willfully ignorant. The latter making for much better television considering.

You're viewing it from the point of view of the audience member. Do you seriously think that at this point that Opal, or more importantly Bolin, know that Kuvira is using bandits to get her away? Do you really think Bolin, the lovable goof who disapproves of bad stuff, would stand for this and stick with her if he knew? It's not about being an idiot or ignorant, it's about Kuvira being sneaky with her tactics. I'd be surprised if anybody of the underlings outside of those who have made it clear they monetize out of war situations (Varric) know of what's going on, unless they are in her inner circle. Bolin is obviously an underling ignorant of his superior's officer's nature, it isn't unheard of. In fact it's once again pretty basic tv writing 101.
If you're implying he's playing coy then you need to seriously watch the show again because nothing of his character in three seasons gives the vibe that he'd be cool by tactics like those.
As to how long he has been there it was implied he joined whenever Kuvira started to do this, so about 3 years.

It's possible that Kuvira hasn't actually shown her "evil side" just yet. Unifying the Earth Kingdom has probably taken a lot of time, and despite her obvious ulterior motives (to the audience, anyway), Kuvira has helped a lot of people. I think Bolin just hasn't seen a problem yet, and views her actions as stern, yes, but also really beneficial for a lot of people. To him, she poses no real threat to the Earth Kingdom.
Until she takes it too far, he won't see her in a different light.

Considering that Tenzin and the higher ups of Republic city didn't seem to give an opinion about Kuvira it should imply that as a whole they're seeing what she's doing as helpful and lawful. Nobody knows what she's planning or what her tactics are. Hence why she's saying "pledge allegiance to me" instead of the army.
Heck, even Kai who was with Opal doesn't disapprove too heavily of her tactics. Opal is largely taking out her frustration with Kuvira and what she did to her mother on the situation. Not saying she's wrong about her stance of helping others, but there's obviously a largely personal side to her opposition because Kai even tells the guy "you are doing the right choice" when he hands them the paper.

It can easily be argued that Bolin saw that speech with the bandits as her trying to reform them. To the audience, the implication is obvious. But to those on the inside, who see the good she's doing for an entire nation of starving and scared people, it's not that simple.
They see her as a leader who will bring the Earth Kingdom back from the brink of destruction, not the powerhungry villain we all see her as.

The Earth Kingdom's entire political structure feels like it's undergoing a shift similar to how Germany progressed after WWI, and is leading to a reaction that's creates a dangerously powerful government. It's a coincidence that the show has a 1920s-like culture but the showmakers seemed to really accentuate this element in the first episode of the season - there might be thematic tie-in.

To be fair, Bolin is kind of an idiot.
It's also not clear how long this has been going on. The straightforward protection racket she presents herself as running seems pretty uncontroversial (only Opal objects, that we see) and may have been working pretty well as she consolidated 90% of the Earth Kingdom territories. Maybe she only recently decided that the remaining holdouts needed an extra incentive beyond that provided by independent bandits.
But yes, the scheme would be pretty obvious if she was consistently offering to wait at the border for just one day, and then the place always gets attacked that day.
