It can easily be argued that Bolin saw that speech with the bandits as her trying to reform them. To the audience, the implication is obvious. But to those on the inside, who see the good she's doing for an entire nation of starving and scared people, it's not that simple.

They see her as a leader who will bring the Earth Kingdom back from the brink of destruction, not the powerhungry villain we all see her as.

The old man, just mentioned that he suspects some type of manipulation, and thats fore hear.

Surely , Surely, someone who has been with them, someone who has been in the command room to some degree has to have noticed an unusual amount of meetings and then bandit things happening around resistant territories

I'm not saying this dude has to be going through an extreme moral delemma, or has been a double agent or something. But if in a future episode it seems like he thought about for like two seconds, I will be fine.

Kuvira hasn't shown her powerlevel?

She doesn't have too, two seconds of thought would have brought anyone to that conclusion.

" Uh.. Commander maam sir, isn't odd that every time we try to unite a territory epically one that's been resisting, it conveniently gets attacked before and/or after our arrival followed by compliance from said territory. "

" Eat your peas bolin "

" I have to go to a meeting with these nice people"

" those people look like bandits"

" They are , we are about to give them work, make them better people "

" what kind of work"

"odd... jobs "

Again you're entirely seeing this from the point of view of the audience member, which isn't much of an argument as to why a character in the show doesn't see it. "Why didn't anybody see that X character is evil? I mean we're seeing specific scenes in their entire lives that display their evil so they must see it too"

Similar to watching a movie with a huge twist that you have already seen. You'll see all the context and symbolism that make it obvious, but an audience member that is watching it for the first time doesn't see it because they're not looking for it. Example: Bruce Willis in 6th sense.

To be fair, Bolin is kind of an idiot.

It's also not clear how long this has been going on. The straightforward protection racket she presents herself as running seems pretty uncontroversial (only Opal objects, that we see) and may have been working pretty well as she consolidated 90% of the Earth Kingdom territories. Maybe she only recently decided that the remaining holdouts needed an extra incentive beyond that provided by independent bandits.

But yes, the scheme would be pretty obvious if she was consistently offering to wait at the border for just one day, and then the place always gets attacked that day.

Even if he is an idiot, more specifically the puppy character, it can't be blamed on him that he doesn't see this when nobody else, not even police officers and political figures see it. He's too distracted thinking of all the good he's doing and he doesn't see the evil in people until it's really obvious.

He doesn't have to think about it because following basic writing she'll give it away or he'll see it first hand and then leave her side. Again I'll say this, even Kai who has seen first hand her tactics and hangs around Opal who I'm sure complains about their tactics, doesn't see the issue with it. So it's not like it's blatantly obvious.

I kind of understand, I'm sure she probably had fans or some people don't like the old system of government so there wasn't resistance , but I don't believe that's the first time that has happened.

Anyone else noticed the Kuriva's design is more pronounced now that she is a central character? Even though Kuriva's look did always stand out to me among the very minor characters, I went back to look at shots of her in S3 and she seems like.... blander or something.

Damn, this episode set up a lot for this season. Kuvira is a mastermind and idk what is going on with Korra. In the preview trailer it looked like she was doing underground mma style fighting but I didn't think they would actually go that route, a definite shocker.

noooooooooo

my emotions

I don't really buy that Kuvira is evil. She's ambitious, but working in a gray area.

I also thought the same thing about Zaheer though....

these writers can't write morally grey, and to be fair it'd be confusing for children I guess. Zaheer had to go and kill the queen and try to outright kill people. They never really went in depth to explain his philosophy which is a shame.

Anybody seeing any similarity between Earth Kingdom Prince and this dude?

That last Earth Queen was quite obviously based on the Empress Dowager. You think they'd take it one step further? Maybe even draw on a little bit of China's civil war history?

I knew Korra was still in a dark place after the mess from Book 3 but even after 3 years... wow.

How far has an Avatar fallen?

Srsly, I mean it's one thing to wrestle Bonesaw to get money to impress maryjane, but she's just wrestling to get her shit kicked in. So fucking dark and sadistic - I'm actually pretty impressed they went this dark.

Also sad they didn't get Mick Foley didn't reprise a role as Boulder Jr. or something.

Someone like Boulder Jr. would be in the highest champion circuit.
Korra is currently a scrub being knocked around in bar-backroom fights.

to be fair she has only left the safety of her family 6 months before the first episode, so she probably hasn't done any serious fighting and has been recuperating for 2 years and a half, so yeah. Probably needs to train her body again, she won't stand a chance against fighters.

im going to do ember spirit instead

Well do you really think they are doing more wrestling circuit matches. I do hope we get Mick though

To me it looked like she was fighting to get beaten up.

How the hell did I not realize this was Mick Foley?? He's obviously the only person worthy of this role. Rock n' Sock Connection was perfection.

Man, I think this is the first time I've seen Korra get legitimately wrecked by an average joe. Either she's still not over the poison, which to be fair looked like some grade A lethal stuff, mercury lethal, or she's trying to forge her bending to become a better avatar. Korra was only using earth bending during the bout so these 6 months could have been spent training.

But backroom fights? Damn.

Some fighter isn't an average Joe. Korra is decent with all elements, but by no means master. That ringfighter is a specialist and most likely more skilled than Korra when it comes to earthbending. Since her recovery just ended months ago she probably getting back in shape. And fighting people who are skilled in fighting but won't kill her is a good way, she may also learn a thing or two. Or maybe she just want to feel and dish out pain.

The Earth Rumble sure has changed quite a bit since Book 2.
Lot safer to actually watch it now without the fear of flying boulders hitting the stands.

It is almost universally the case that the wider world is on the side of the secessionists (when secessionists are in the clear majority in the territory) on almost every occasion where the secessionists don't clearly want to secede just so that they can do something horrible.

I think the issue with comparisons to the modern world is the fact that Avatar picks and chooses which modern values it wants. There were no elections to choose Zuko to be fire lord and I highly doubt they choose his daughter either. The earth queen was a tyrant who Korra helped take tax money and impoverish the people. Half of season 2 Korra spends shouting that Unaloq isn't the real chief as if there is a inherent righteousness in the order of succession. Now Unaloq's kids rule the north, still without a single hint that any elections or form of democracy took place. This episode we have another unelected prince being paraded and helped to succeed the throne. If they are fine with these feudal systems then when the show looks at a completely bloodless reunification of a country and tries to tell me that the methods are wrong?

It doesn't take much look at history to see how secessions and rebellions have led to ridiculous amount of bloodshed and destruction, Even today we have Ukraine, where the internationally supported government is fighting to keep their country whole. Georgia too with the US giving it "full support" towards it's "territorial integrity". So while I agree that the layman is all for secession, political reality shows that countries that are on the "good side" regularly fight and kill to keep parts of their territory and this is not denounced.

I always found it a little weird that she never uses her native element that often. I guess her personality would cause her to lean more towards firebending, though.
