PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | October 2014

@givepsvlove We're still making New 'n' Tasty for PlayStation Vita, and Munch's Oddysee HD for PS Vita is also in the final stages.

Inb4 Munch's Oddysee coming in 2016 and NnT coming in 2020

So did Sony actually raised the activation limits for portable systems like they said they would when they released the Vita TV in Japan?

I still own a PSP and don't intend on getting rid of it, but if I get a Vita TV will I be able to activate it to my account? Is three devices allowed?

PS TV or 64gb memory card, hmm... Pretty ridiculous that they're around the same price lol.
I'll never understand the appeal of playing handheld games on a TV. It misses the point and that's what a console is for anyway except consoles have more and better games. Console games on your handheld upgrades your handheld. Handheld games on your TV is a downgrade compared to a console.

You must have a Vita now (as you need a Vita to use a MC), so just get the MC then :). I mean, all the Vi...I mean, PlayStation TV is only a crippled Vita with lack of support with at least 30-40 percent of the native Vita software and no touchscreen/rear touchpad/gryo controls...... So, why not just get the memory card and use it on the thing you can take every with you instead of getting a tiny box that only plays a fraction of the Vita software available.

Sorry to be so bitter on the PS TV, but the fact that it cannot play EVERY Vita game and not support using a Vita as a control really bothers me for some reason :(...

Mostly yeah, but there are some exceptions. Personally I'm looking forward to playing Persona 4 Golden on a TV. Should at least look better than playing the PS2 version. I'd rather play RPGs like that on a TV than a handheld

Taking a break from TitS and have had a great time playing Tearaway. Platinumed.

Wonder what I'll play next. Are there any similar length-wise?

If you own the Sly Collection, the original game is a easy platinum and it is very short compared to Sly 2 and 3 :).

Guacamelee for just beating it should not take that long (though trying to platinum the game might take a long while; getting all the trophies, beating the game on hard mode, getting the secret ending, ect).

To all the VitaGafers that recommended Frozen Synapse Prime, wow, thank you all so very much! I just jumped on it based on the recommendations and the experiences from the owners and I am very hooked! Such a great game! To anyone else that is still on the fence and loves tactical and strategy games, but is scared away by the price and the fact that it has had low media coverage, just do it. Double Eleven did a fabulous job with great graphics, excellent control and touch implementation and wonderful gameplay!

This person speaks with the wisdom of a god!

Does it have forced touch controls, or a good balance of touch and physical?

Well, it's a new gen so it's $60 on ps4 and $40 on ps3/vita. I wouldn't let that affect your decision anyway, though. Imo Natural Doctrine is definitely a 'full' game, as worthy of my $40 as, say, Demon Gaze was.

You've got a couple questions in there:

1) What I like is that it's a truly tactical game. A lot of SRPGs don't actually have all that much strategy. For example, as much as I like Jeanne D'arc, it's pretty easy and standard. Lots of others are easily breakable -- FFTactics, for example, you can grind your characters into gods... and even if you don't, it's hard to keep your challenge level right because you're often either too weak (grind) or too powerful (easy). This game doesn't really suffer from that in the same way. The game requires tactics, the game requires you understand and use the combat system not only to attack your enemies, but to defend against them.

This requires a combination of understanding your special moves, understanding range, movement, etc, understanding how to chain/link your moves for best effect, while never leaving yourself over extended. And of course, there's a bit of luck thrown in since you can always miss a key swing (though it provides all necessary info, such as your chance to hit, before you commit).

It's tactical in a way I always wished Valkyria Chronicles was... but that game (as much as I loved it) was crippled by a terrible scoring system that valued speed over all else, so you ended up doing ridiculous things to beat a key enemy 'fast' (usually with all scouts). I wanted something that valued actual tactics -- a game that recognized minimizing team damage against terrifying odds requires more skill than running one character across a battlefield to get a lucky shot in against an enemy captain. This game would kill that stupid scout and eat it for breakfast.

You open a door, and you see, say, a multilevel area in front of you, with 15 enemies strewn throughout the zones. You need to approach that situation intelligently and tactically, understanding your core strengths and weaknesses, focusing on ways to eliminate key threats (usually the next queued enemy) all the while moving in such a way to link your moves. Because if you don't, the enemy will, and you'll be dead.

You need to be able to assess whether you'll successfully be able to push forward, chaining moves, linking your turns (by killing next queued enemies while keeping some of yours in reserve), or whether you need to retreat and regroup. Even retreats must be tactical, since a large group of enemies can chain pretty far.

2) Some practical examples -- you might spec up your main character to be able to use a two handed sword and get some special attacks, or you might repec him for a certain mission to be a gun wielder. Or another character might need specing for extra health potions, or you might want to focus on her damage output. Or for another warrior, who does lots of small attacks, you can focus on damage output or you can focus on more attacks with less damage but a better chance to 'stagger' your enemy (staggering gives bonuses to other attacks and prevents counters). I currently have a bunch of points spent to give my main character a skill that will counter on every attack evasion... nasty against lots of grunts, especially since he's wearing two evasion rings. But that wouldn't be a good setup on mission that's primarily ranged enemies.

3) New equipment... it depends. Sometimes a new longsword +X just changes your damage output. But then there are other decisions to make... do you give your gunner a sniper rifle you found that does 1 shot with high damage, or let her keep a hunting rifle with considerably less damage but 2 (or more, depending on your skill loadout) shots? Again, it's very situational, since it's rather wonderful when she can take out two weak ranged enemies in one turn. Ultimately, though, this game isn't too lewt heavy -- you'll find some new powerful weapons behind optional doors filled with hard enemies.

4) Story events affect party size, etc, so it's hard to answer this without spoiling anything.

...anyway, I didn't sit down to write such a long essay. I'd rather be playing ND. I'm just sad it got such a lot of pre-release hate that scared people away, because I think it's an absolute gem. It's probably my favorite vita game, at least in the rpg category. It -is- hard at times -- specifically, if you don't understand the combat system and try to brute force it, you'll die. But if you do take the time to plan your turns tactically, you can often wipe out larger forces with only some scrapes and bruises. And when you finally take out some side corridor in some optional dungeon you've been skipping, it's got that feel of 'hell yeah'.

I'm still playing this game on 'lethal', and fighting for every inch, and loving it.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, I really appreciate it and I hope that I will be able to play it sooner than I think ;)

No problem. I think you, specifically, will love it because I see you love Frozen Synapse so much. While they have different combat systems (obviously), I believe they both scratch that same itch so many games promise to scratch but don't - namely, forcing you to use tactics and have a strategy.

I doubt ND will ever be a success, which is a shame, but it deserves every sale it gets. I hope they localize more like it - in a better gaming world, a new and interesting battle system would not be a death knell, but a cha-ching at the register. Unfortunately, I fear Frozen Synapse Prime may share the same fate, which I find equally depressing.

Okay, guys. My finger is on the trigger. Amazon just processed my refund for my Destiny Ghost edition, so I have a bit of extra cash and an excuse to blow it on a Vita. I really want a white one to match my PS4, so I'm thinking of getting this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F27JDUY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Will I have any problems playing it in the US since it's Japanese? Like, will I be able to buy a memory card in the store and pop it into my Vita without any problems? Will I be able to connect to my US PS4 for remote play?

Only problem you'll have is that the functions for circle and X is swapped. So circle for confirm and cross for cancel instead of the usual.

You can use it in the US without problems. You can connect it to any PS4 and memory cards are not region-locked or anything. The only "issue" is that the functions of O and X are swapped in the UI and in some games as well.

So that's literally the only difference?

Also, what games should I check out? I'm mostly getting it for Persona 4 Golden, P4: Dancing All Night (whenever it comes out), and Muramasa Rebirth.

ONE MORE THING. I'm sorry, just insecure. Would you guys definitely recommend the actual Vita over the Playstation TV?

It'll be kinda nice to hear what genre and preference you have. :)

Personally, I'm recommending :

Dragon's Crown if you like brawlers.
DJ Max Technika Tune/Project Diva f for your rhythm needs
Toukiden/Soul Sacrifice Delta for some Hunting game.
Tearaway and Little Big Planet for Platformers
Killzone Mercenaries for FPS
Demon Gaze for RPGs
Danganronpa/VLR for Visual Novel/Mystery/Puzzle
Gravity Daze for some Action RPG.

I'll recommend more once if you state your preference for games. :)

Well basically it all comes down to where you usually play. If you like to play on a sofa at home then PS TV is really the choice. Otherwise remote play outside of home, gaming at bed or any other place where you don't have a TV, I pick the Vita. Vita is good if you attend an offline meet ups as well as gaming at the office.

One more thing. Not all Vita games can be played on the PS TV. Usually it's because of the touch based games and other license stuff.

Does it have forced touch controls, or a good balance of touch and physical?

You don't have to use the touch controls, that's the best part. But they are so perfectly implemented and crafted that it just makes it much easier to navigate and create your squads movements! It's a great game and you can tell a lot of love was put into the final product. Just dive in!

I already have Dragon's Crown on PS3. For Soul Sacrifice by "hunting game" do you mean like Monster Hunter? That seems like it could be fun. A friend of mine also recommended Danganronpa so I will probably check that out.

Honestly I prefer to play JRPGs and action RPGs, platformers, and adventure games.

Yes, hunting games like MH.

Vita is basically a treasure trove of JRPGs and indie games and most of them have the same genre as your preferences.

If you missed some PSX/PSP games then you're in for a treat. Lots of outstanding PSX/PSP games can be played on the Vita.

You should also check out Ys: Memories of Celceta and if you didn't have a PSP there are also Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky or older Ys titles.

Nice, didn't realize you could play PSP games as well. Good to know there are lots of JRPGs. I think someone also mentioned that I should try out Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth but I'm skeptical because I've seen the reviews for the other games in the series...

I have Ys Origins on Steam and it's pretty awesome. I'd definitely be willing to try out other games in the series. I've also heard really good things about Legend of Heroes and have thought about buying it many times on Steam.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth is actually a remake of the first game in the series. The battle system is remarkably redone and the framerate is stable. It's a very good game especially if you want some comedy stuff about the console wars. The story is also said to be the best in the whole series so it's a good start if you want to play Neptunia games. If you're still skeptical then you should at least read some reviews of our fellow gaf members on its OT. HDN:R

If you want to try some Ys games then be sure to also pick up Ys: Oath in Felghana. It's my personal favorite and lots of action with one of the best OSTs.
Also recommending Child of Light because I love that game too.
Also started playing this yesterday. The chemistry between a mix of RPG and Platforming is simply lovely. Also the combat is not boring despite it being turn-based because of its resemblance to an ATB style battle system that you can actually manipulate. All in all, I also recommend Child of Light. :)

Play Persona 4 Golden. Seriously. Best JRPG on the Vita, and definitely my favorite JRPG of all time.

Also recommending Child of Light because I love that game too.

If I order a Vita soon, P4G is going to be the game that I order along with it. Can't wait to play the PSP version of P3, if that's even possible on Vita.

Definitely possible but you should know that there are some stark differences between the Persona 3 Portable and Persona 3/Persona 3 FES.

Persona 3 FES:
Fully animated cutscenes.
3D world
"The Answer" scenario
You cannot control other party members

Persona 3 Portable:
Cutscenes are rendered as images instead of an actual animated one
2D world where you travel as a dot on a map.
No "The Answer"
You can play as a female MC with a newly made OST and weapons just for her.
Female MC has different choices and scenes that are specific to her and her social links
You can control every party member

It is, yes. Just buy it on the PSN store.

This is good to know! I'm getting more and more excited lol.

Get Demon Gaze.

Looks interesting, what is the actual gameplay like? Turn based?

I didn't know about the cutscenes or 2D world. That is kind of disappointing. I still have a copy of FES for PS2, though, so it will be nice to compare/contrast the two. Being able to control all of the party members sounds worth it to me, though. Will probably run through as the female MC for the hell of it, as well.

Well I forgot to mention but you are only on a 2D world when you're traversing the real world or basically any place where there are no battles like the mall or at school. Otherwise everything is in 3D like in the Tartarus.

Are you a new Vita owner? If so, congrats man :D; wonderful system :).

As for the PSP games, if you never owned a PSP....you hit the jackpot man :D; almost hundreds of games you now have access to on top of the Vita and PS1 library :').

My recommendations on the PSP side include the following:
- Daxter (3d Platformer)
- Sega Genesis Collection - PS3 Transfer tittle (Collection of Genesis games; only way to play Sonic 1 and 2 on Vita as of now)
- Gurimun: A Monstrous Tale (Megaman Legends X 3D Zelda....whats not to love :D)
- Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (2d Platformer; very solid game)
- Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (2D Platformer)
- Ape Escape on the Loose (3D Platformer)
- Hot Shots Tennis (Tennis game; really fun :D)
- Persona 3 Portable (JRPG - If you love P4G and don't mind no 3d hub to explore....get this NOW man :D! Wonderful JRPG that I loved even more then P4G (due to the story mainly and the cast :D)

Hope this helps :).

Edit: Oh, as for P3P, the core gameplay is much more streamlined compared to the FES version; no 'tire' system, a Easy Mode added in, Female MC with improved S. Links, and the combat system getting refinements (control party, guard function added, ect). Honestly, after playing P3P and trying to play P3:FES.....I just couldn't do it; the gameplay differences really turned me off the game :(. I loved the PSP version on my Vita, so I really recommend that if you loved P4G :D.

Edit 2: I think you asked which is better to get; a normal Vita or a PS TV. I think the Vita is the stronger option, just on the mentality of having access to more games alone. The PS TV is more or less a gutted Vita that can only play a fraction of the PS Vita library (as many games use the Touch Screen/Rear Touchpad/Gyro/ect). That is bad due to you missing out on many great games (Gravity Rush and Tearaway come to mind). Besides, the Vita's screen is awesome (even better if you can find a OLED Vita), so playing games on that is sorta like playing them in HD (but not really; many games are sadly not native res outside of a select few and a majority of the Indie library).

Dunno about you guys but I really like playing PSX classics on my Vita. Looking forward to Strider 1+2 next week X3

Wish we could access multiple stores though cuz dem PC Engine games on JP PSN are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

My only handheld is a 3DS XL but I barely use it (I'll probably sell it) as I just can't see the screen well enough. It's not the size of the screen, I just move it too much (controls) that naturally causes the screen to move around. I'm happy for those that are either steady enough, or who have good enough eye tracking, but I just can't do it.
I'm happy to see traditional portable games come to the big screen. If there was even a video out for the 3DS, I would love that.

I am in the mood to play Jak 1.
...but I don't feel like connecting my PS3...and I'm sure I don't have the Jak Trilogy on the Vita.
...and I only want Jak 1 on my Vita as I don't like 2 or 3.
Make it a Plus freebie soon, Sonty pls.

In Europe, i'm 100% sure that it already was. Not sure about US/Asia.
