Nintendo Downloads - October 2014

Wii Party U was a letdown, I swear if Nintendo doesn't allow 5 players multi on MP10 I'm gonna be pissed... and I kinda like WPU, but goddamn the pad gameplay and 4p only was so I'll conceived and the board mode made for such a fragmented experience especially if you were gonna play it with 1st timers... it's crazy that there's still no definitive party game on the system after 2 years

Does it not? I think the GamePad player plays as Bowser and the rest as the four players.

Every monday i open this thread with hope and i leave it with tears. No SMT IV :(
And totally a crappy week for the 3DS.

Mighty Final Fight, yes! That only took... nine months since the Japanese VC release. Also it's kinda surreal seeing all the 3DS price reductions and realising none of those games were released in Australia.

Edit: Wait, I think we got Bird Mania. Wow.

Jesus 1 f... virtual console title per week for each console. Man consumer has been so harsh to Nintendo, I mean, why would anyone not buy them.

Why is everyone all "No SMTIV *sobsob*"? Atlus explicitely said Late october (and it'll most likely be early nov.). Given their history of delays for Europe (especially for this very game), I'm surprised people are expecting it to be released early...

Anyway, pretty boring week once again... not complaining anyway, got too much to play at the moment.

But the release is PAL anyway, there was no NA release of this game.

But it doesn't matter. A 60Hz version exists, so there's no reason for them to stick to 50Hz just because the Wii release never happen in the US.

Now, if there was no 60Hz version, that'd be another story altogether...

50 Hz or 60 Hz? The only press releases I can find don't say. From what I remember there never was a US version but it has been out on the US eShop at 60Hz.

Do you really want the Wii U version, though? I would think the Wii VC is best given how awful NES games look on Wii U. (Presuming there's no 60 Hz version in EU.)

It did come out in the US for Wii, just not NES. Then again, I have no idea if it was 60 Hz on Wii or not.

If nobody knows or can even tell if the one they played on Wii was 50/60, does it even matter? :D

I'd still take the Wii U VC over Wii VC version just for the system level & emulator features.

Ufouria (and a bunch of other Sunsoft NES games) used a special programming technique to play basslines using DPCM samples that will not work correctly if the game is played faster or slower than the intended speed. Just ask anyone who bought Ufouria in America, it sounds like complete shit.

Wonder if this means we get Mighty Final Fight soon in the US as well. Still deciding if I should get it it on Wii U or 3DS (considering how hard SF2010 is, waiting for Wii U on that).

These sales often remind me how many shovelware there actually is on the 3DS eShop.

I agree with you about 50/60 Hz.

As for what system to buy the game on, eh, given what NES games look like on Wii U (someone posted a comparison image at one point and NES games look kind of dark and awful on Wii U), I'll pass on the system level features to be able to play it looking a whole lot better.

Ah, that's unfortunate. I haven't picked it up yet.

Question!

Club Nintendo Wii U games give DDP points right?

They should, yes.

ETA:

I was able to find the July 2014 discussion of NES games on Wii, 3DS and Wii U. This is on 3DS (which is comparable to Wii in VC game appearance):

And here's Mega Man (NES) on Wii U:

Per sörine:

On the other hand there's no blurry filter, pixels are nice and chunky while colors are vibrant, so 3DS is still leagues ahead of Wii U and I'd even put it above Wii outside native res personally. So basically; Wii (240p) > 3DS > Wii (480i/p) or Wii mode (Wii U) >>>> Wii U.

And here's Mega Man (NES) on Wii U:

Are all VC games poorly colored on Wii U? I noticed Kirby Super Star and Earthbound look considerably more washed out than I remember them. MM Battle Network and Metroid Fusion also seem darker than I'd expect. I prefer the weird colors to the blur though, I can screw with colors not pixels.

From what I've been able to ascertain, SNES games look better on Wii U than on Wii. I don't know too much about this stuff, though, apart from what I quoted above about NES games. I haven't tried out GBA games because I really prefer playing those on a handheld (DS Lite).

Yeah it does.
One of the reasons I like playing retro games is for the challenge so I don't want some slowed down baby versions. (I know that some time based games are harder/impossible due to improper 50Hz conversions).
Not to mention that 50Hz games are, in a way, worse than on the Wii U because, because the games repeat every 5th frame to achieve ''60hz'' so there's stuttering and missing button inputs.

(S)NES games also have extra input lag on the Wii U.

GBA games are supposedly fine.

MY NA Wii U has been very light in terms of games to DL.

Any recommendations or game I might've missed in the NES/SNES era?

Then you should be getting the original versions and playing them with the original controller.
Not these ported versions on a different gamepad with save-anywhere savestates.

The Wii U has savestates?? Since when?

Please stop spreading this misinformation.

Neither of these screenshots are accurate to how they look on the noted hardware, not even close.

Why?
I don't see what's wrong with using a different controller (I don't use the turbo function) and it's not like I abuse save states. I just use them to either to temporally suspend my progress or ''bookmark'' a particular level or cutscene.

Regarding the emulation, I believe it's pretty accurate. I mean if it's good enough for the speed running community, then it's good enough for me.

No misinformation intended. Thanks for correcting me. I was only going from a previous post. Do the 3DS and Wii U games not look like this on their hardware? I'd be grateful to see a more accurate comparison. I believe it was sörine and Robin64 who provided the original screens, so perhaps they can shed some light on their respective sources.

It is true that the 3DS NES VC is slightly scaled though. Yes NES games are 240px high but for whatever insane reason Nintendo decided to crop the overscan area away, then upscale the remainder to fill 240px.

It makes me look forward to Ultimate NES remix for only one reason, those will probably be the "correct" 240px height must like the Wii U version of the game looks way better than the VC.

Augh. I absolutely loathe that overscan exists as anything more than a distant memory. I'm still yet to see any overscanning artifacts even in old games

The first screenshot is from an emulator and is a raw pixel dump. The NES doesn't output square pixels, so the example is not in the correct aspect ratio. The second screenshot is simply the first screenshot (again, with the incorrect aspect ratio) with some nonsense filter applied to it. 3DS has a slight filter to it because it needs to slightly stretch pixels horizontally to provide the correct aspect ratio, but there is not stretching in the example.

You could pull a direct 3DS screenshot from Miiverse though to show it compared to the Wii U version.

Oh, I see. I'll try to dig up some better screens for comparison's sake, then. Thank you.
