Assassin's Creed "Parity": Unity is 900p/30fps on both PS4 & Xbox One

Chill? Reminds me of the "rational" gamers that were saying chill after the X1 reveal and DRM plans.

No. Don't chill. Raise hell in a constructive manner. Spread the word. Cause a stink. Let Ubi feel the heat, just like MS felt it after seeing the preorder numbers when word got out about their original plans.

Staying quiet in these instances usually equates to being complacent. Raising hell doesn't mean rioting in the streets and death threats. It means raising your voice so even game media can't ignore for fear of missing out on the next attention grabbing topic.

And I've seen a lot of people suspect it in this thread, but I don't know if MS had a hand in this. Because if they did, MS really miscalculated the benefit of having the PS4 version gimped to force parity or at least the ability of Ubi to not be blatant about intentionally locking both versions to avoid debates, because this makes MS' hardware look inferior. Again, I don't know if MS had a hand in this. Wouldn't influencing Ubi to gimp the PS4 version be illegal somehow?

A part of me wouldn't doubt Ubi said this just to cover their own butts, so they don't have to put in the extra effort in the PS4 or both versions, with their COD-like release schedule for AC games maybe resulting in less time to optimize.

I grew up on Atari, so if the game was 720p it wouldn't matter to me if that's the game the dev wanted to make. But to intentionally hold a game back to avoid debates and in favor of the company you just happen to have a co-marketing deal with? I can't support that.

Key word is be constructive.

Sony needs to start enforcing some rules, gimping one version because of the competitions weaknesses is ridiculous
Ubi should be ashamed too, as developers they're letting themselves down, announcing the unnecessary downgrade to the world makes even worse.

so true, and i agree.

Not a viable reason, hence the entire thread blowing up. Why downgrade something? Why not give your consumers the best possible product? There is no reason to downgrade it because of of the platforms your product is being released on can't maintain a certain quality.
Well it is a viable reason. They saw what happened with Destiny. Destiny's image wasn't interfered with talks about resolution and framerate because there was parity with both platforms. The only difference here is Ubisoft freely admitted it. That's why we have this discussion.

40% that we can barely notice while playing. 40% is a significant number, but is it that significant in pratice terms?
I will not argue "numbers", but I do argue what I see. I am yet to see the PS4 showing something that makes me see it as a much stronger console. Last gen I saw horrible differences between the PS3 and XB360, and that never made the XB360 MUCH stronger then PS3.
Such as last gen, this gen I would say XB1 and PS4 are on the same "class". I know one is more capable then another, but I still cant see how that difference is that big.

It isnt, looking a few feet away at a computer screen you can see the slightly more blurry image of 900p vs 1080p depending on the game (the new lord of the rings games the 900p difference is less pronounced due to the AA method).

When viewing from 5-8ft in 40'' tv I cant tell the difference between 900p vs 1080p, It is less of a difference then many PS3 vs 360 games, that did have noticeable problems when viewing from 5-8ft on a 40'' tv.

The only games that have a big as a difference as 360 vs ps3 games is cod ghosts BF4 and MGS:GZ.

360 was the defacto multiplat console to go to last gen. Where a lot of games did have noticeable graphical shortcomings on the PS3 version which did make it a less enjoyable experience
This gen its not the case aside from cod ghosts and to a lesser extent BF4 and MGS:GZ .

Bottomline is when i watch the DF + gamesyde videos of recent games on my gaming TV I can only see the difference when the pointed out to me, going back and forth between X1 and PS4 videos I cant tell the difference.

Needs to be quoted more.

Came expecting some discussion of the CPU-bound explanation.

My expectations were wayyyyy too high :/

Increasing resolution can impact the framer ate. If true, continue.

Increasing CPU load can impact the frame rate. If true, continue.

Assume program is CPU bound. This means any more load will reduce the frame rate below acceptable target.

Assume GPU is not at 100% capacity.

If you now increase the GPU load by increasing resolution, frame rate will now drop below acceptable levels.

Therefore, it is possible that this particular program cannot be run at a higher resolution even though its GPU is not being used to max effect.

But it is more fun to meltdown and post gifs of money.

You do understand that the GPU isn't taxing the CPU's computations by increasing the number of pixels it renders, right?

It's obvious this is Microsoft's doing. No dev gave a shit about resolution parity or any type of parity last gen. What a shit company.

It can't be that hard to patch the PS4 version to 1080p. I'm hoping that there's enough of a backlash that in a couple days they backpedal hard and announce that's what they're doing, this guy mis-spoke, etc.

Making forum posts and it either affecting or not affecting your purchasing decision is the spot on perfect reaction.
I guess I don't understand why a slightly noticeable resolution downgrade would stop someone from picking up a game they already pre ordered. Like, you pre ordeed te game months in advance. Before you knew what resolution it was running at you thought it looked great. And you felt like you would have a good time playing the game based on impressions/past experience with the series. But now that you know it was going to be 900p all along, you refuse to buy it. Either way, those aren't as bad as some of the other posts I've seen in the thread.

Wouldn't be buying anyway.

Can't stand Ubisoft games - talk about same old shitty time and time again....
I'd love some more same old shitty Rayman. :(

Even after they didn't bother with any AA in Rayman: Legends PS4! I'm forgiving like that.

Ohhhh my GOD Ubi how dare you do this shit!

Because of this I will not be buying this game on my PC, fuck you and your forced parity!

j/k I'm not a console warrior

Huge overreaction in this thread.

Do we know any of the other facts? Do we know that there is parity with all of the other grapical settings as well? Maybe its 900p on both, but we will see differences in other areas like shadow quality or something?

I mean I get it, going with the lowest common denominator for parity's sake is extremely lame, but its not like its going to ruin the game. I'm not saying dont be angry at all, but don't let it ruin your day lol.

Edit: And yes I am kinda pissed about this, I think its really lame. AC4 obviously looked beautiful on PS4 at 1080p, and WD at 900p looked noticeably worse. I'm not going to cancel my PS4 preorder though. Can't go PC either, dem Ubi ports...

Ahahahahaha. Ahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa.

Oh wait, you're serious, let me laugh even harder

What a great decision. They're CPU bound so they're artificially creating resolution parity. Yes. That makes almost too much sense.

I've decided to not buy the game on PS4, thanks Ubi.

Seriously Ubisoft, this is one of the most bizarre announcements I've seen in gaming, it shows a complete lack of awareness by Management.
They need to look inside their Management culture, how this could ever be approved is beyond me. It could have avoided so many debates and stuff.

I won't be purchasing ANY Ubi games new ever again because of this. Sucks because I really wanted FC4 day one. Oh well, I can wait.

They did it with black flag so I'm sure they'll do it following the backlash

This thread right now:

People who realize its anti-consumer action: "This is bullshit"

PC elites: "Sucks to be you guys. Running it at 1440p. "

People unaffected/don't get it: "Why is everyone overreacting? Why does the resolution matter that much?"

oh god it's happening again

People act like this is a horrible case of anti consumerism. It isn't.

It's stupid. But that's about it.

Your saying purposely making your product inferior for 1 specific set of consumers to match another is not anti-consumerism? When they can release a better version for little to no extra work?

They are purposely downgrading... Sure why not have Radeon and Nvidia resolution + FPS parity because of stuff and debate....

You know what really fucks me off?

The absolute cavalier attitude the article has to this news. Look at what they write:

'Assassin's Creed Unity will run at 900p/30fps on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Ubisoft has confirmed, with the publisher opting to aim for platform parity to avoid discussion over the differences in performance.'

They actually present Ubisoft's argument as if its true. Jesus christ. Who the fuck writes this shit? This is quite clearly a MASSIVE FUCKING STORY that the journalist has stumbled on, but he doesn't even fucking realise it. He doesn't even fucking realise it. It takes the community to have to explain what a fucking massive story this is. Can you imagine the same thing happening in any other industry? What in Christ's name is wrong with video games journalists?

I don't expect it, but I really don't mind it.

I do own a ps4 but I'd rather have the game for Xbox one however I would obviously have some reservations about buying it knowing the performance on the ps4 version would be meaningfully better. Now that this point is moot I can buying the Xbox one version without worrying about it having lesser performance than it would on my ps4.

You'd mind if they said they were matching all console versions to the Wii-U

Even then, it will probably only piss off maybe 5%-8% of the gaming populace when all is said and done. That's not very much when you consider how many gamers there are in the world.

The game will still do very well.

46 pages on GAF in a few hours.

5-8% of the populace.

So many delusional people sticking up for bullshit yet again. This shit depresses me so much. You people are singing consumer rights away a bit at a time every time you defend garbage policies like these.

Canceling a pre-order is acting like they killed my mother? Hyperbole much?

Do you realize how much effort and money it takes to pre-order a game online at Best Buy? Zero. Do you know why I pre-ordered it? Because BestBuy is offering $10 back for pre-orders on select titles. Unity was one of them.

The great thing about pre-orders is they can be canceled. I owe them nothing.

So there's that ^

We all know your agenda here, but this is just complete bullshit. The gap between PS360 games was never as big as PS4/XB1. Just because your selective eyes all of a sudden can't see the difference when last gen you could spot a 2 pixel win from the 360, yea you are full of shit. You already got your MS tag you don't need to be so delusional anymore.

Didn't Cerny say that the PS4 was designed so that the GPU could be used to offload some of the CPU stuff? If I remember correctly, this was something that the developers would learn to do when they were more familiar with the hardware?

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing this in one of the conferences he gave.

So for Ubisoft its more important to give a tap on the back of Xbox users while nerfing their offer to Playstation users instead of just giving away the best product they can?

Well that's an incredibly shitty way of thinking. And since when it does make sense? I don't remember them cheaping 360 and PS3 versions for the Wii or again cheaping the 360 version for the PS3.

No, seriously, what a load of bullshit. Assassin's Creed is not part of gaming budjet anymore for now.

I have a feeling its gonna happen.

Wow, totally done with Ubisoft. With this coupled with the murdering of all Tom Clancy titles (Splinter Cell Conviction / Blacklist is the worst shit ever as an old hardcore Splinter Cell fan), I'm done.
