Asami and Korra's friendship/relationship is coming out of nowhere. Since when has she ever confided in Asami aside from the wheelchair thing?

They were really good friends in season 3

-Driving around the city
-Sand adventures
-Hanging out by the car while Mako and Bolin investigated the desert town

Eh. She did that type of thing with other people too, but nothing enough to convince me "only Asami would understand Korra's pain" aside from they're both girls I suppose.

As WhereAreMahDragonz said and
two years is a long time so they've probably become the best of penpals during that time period.

Didn't Korra say it was the first time she'd written back?

This was a really good episode but they never did the legwork to establish the Krew and that undercuts some of this stuff.

But it was really good.

Then show us how it flows naturally. I get that a timeskip kinda brushes all these issues away, but it bothers me that we didn't see their friendship develop more like the Gaang's over time. It's like they realized they done messed up by the middle of Book 3 and tried to correct it but it was too late, and now they're trying to shoehorn this big friendship between them. It just doesn't feel "earned" yet and is one of the few things that bothered me about this fantastic episode.

It really doesn't feel shoehorned. You want shoehorned relationships go watch the S3 premiere of Arrow, cause that is some bullshit from the writers.

Well
Korra only wrote to Asami once
, but I can imagine that Asami really is the only one she can talk to.

Mako is obviously out because of their past relationship, plus he and Bolin seem to be very protective of Korra. They would worry, and get on the next ship to the southern water tribe to be with her. It's obvious that Korra's too proud to admit that she needs their help, so this is the last thing she wants. Tenzin would also worry, too. I'm surprised she let him come visit her, but I suppose she thought that she'd be back to her full strength by then.

Asami seems to trust in Korra's abilities and strength moreso than the other two. You never really see her telling Korra "I can handle this, you go do something else!" She's always working with others, probably because she has no bending skills of her own.

Not to mention they've bonded over the course of season 3 regarding Mako and everyday life (considering they're both girls). It's not surprising that Asami is the only one she'd write to. Frankly, it'd be weird if she did write to Mako or Bolin.

After all the S2 crap with Mako, Assami would be the closest person for Korra to talk to about, etc.

But at that point she's just confiding in a friend by process of elimination. She should confide in Asami because of Asami. What makes Asami so special aside from everyone else sucks? If there isn't a good answer then by having Korra write to only Asami, it feels unearned. That's what I mean.

This is a reasonable point, although I do feel that the reduction of Asami to a person who does almost nothing (that we as an audience get to see) but selflessly offer to do things for Korra over and over sort of robs her of any significance of personality of her own that is independent from the main character of the show. Which is especially weird since Asami is supposed to be (a) a central character, and (b) an important businesswoman and leading public figure in Republic City. But aside from the train station opening we've seen almost nothing about her business, and she was able to just up and leave it to chill with Korra in the EK for most of Book 3. There has been (relatively) more developed for Korra and Asami then, say, Korra and Bolin, but it's still not really clear why they'd spend time together (at least not from Asami's perspective; Korra as you point out doesn't really have anyone else).

I guess I wish they bonded more like they did with Book 3 Chapter 1 when they talked about Mako with each other. We needed to see more of that. You say that she seems to trust in Korra's ability by her not trying to protect her, but I woud love to see a less passive and more active action that really solidifies why we should believe there's a special friendship built.

But Asami really doesn't have anyone else either? When book three starts, she and Mako (in terms of their friendship) are on the rocks, much like with Korra and Mako. Bolin is a doofus, so Korra was the only person she had.

Hmm re watching the scene she writes
"Dear Asami I'm sorry I haven't written to you sooner but every time i've tried, I never knew what to say."
"The past two years have been the hardest of my life even though I can get around fine now, I still can't go into the avatar state."
So yeah it does sound like this is her first response or she hasn't written to her in a while.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't show any of the krew visiting Korra at least once during those years.

Man we gotta get you a bigger GREAT UNITER one.
At this point I'm just waiting for the right episode.
I'm kinda surprised they didn't show any of the krew visiting Korra at least once during those years.
That's because they don't give a shit about Korra. =(

Nah, they are absorbed in their own lives and their own personal progression during those three years. So they're pretty busy.

TOO busy to visit THE AVATAR.

This episode already got off to a good start before the video began when Nick requested parental authentication when last week they didn't. I already knew this shit was going to get real, real fast.

Overall this was a very strong episode.
I loved how they showed off all of the letters the gang sent on the dresser. You can also tell how Korra was getting frustrated with her friends doing awesome things but was failing to appreciate how awesome it was tell them the milestones she reached in her recovery.

The decision to use Katara and Toph were on point. Toph is a hard ass but she still is someone who learned to get around her disability by listening and finding patience. She will be a great teacher for Korra's spiritual recovery. Katara didn't even need to use water bending to fully heal Korra. She had the presence of mind to get Korra to help herself recover physically.

LOL moments

Picturing Bolin wearing a fedora as he wrote those letters to Korra.
Bolin's LARPing in those letters.
How Tenzin avoids getting slapped.
Aang still loves that "trick" from season 1.
Aang rolls.
Korra getting punked by simple thieves.

Korrasami confirmed?!?!?

If so, who's bottom and who's top? ~_~

Poor Sokka maybe we'll get at least one flashback of him now that Toph is back.
We already saw Sokka in Season 1 as an adult during Yakkon's trial.

Still you think one of them would at least try to visit to see how she is especially if she's not responding to any of their letters for such a extended period of time.

Well yeah, but I think maybe that's what also contributed heavily to her depression.

It's obvious that they care a lot, but
it was obvious from their letters that they were too busy with life to visit. On one hand, it makes them really shitty friends, but I guess they figured that Korra didn't want them around anyway. Which is true.

Actually Korra did explicitly say to Asami she glad she is around because they can relate to each other as women in a previous season. I can't remember which one though.

Asami is rich enough to fly herself around at will but Mako was far from that and based on what we've seen of Bolin's post mover lifestyle it looks like he still is in the same boat.

So my girlfriend is really curious as to why the grown man she is dating (me, obviously) is devoting 30 minutes of his life the last two weeks to watching a cartoon...
Long story short, I've convinced her it's just a really good show and managed to get her to agree to watch an episode of Legend of Korra to see if she likes it (if I watch Downton Abbey with her... Ugh)
I really want her to enjoy the show but I'm worried that starting without having seen the original Avatar series will leave her confused as to what the big deal is or what the heck is going on...

Serious question:
Can you enjoy Legend of Korra without having seen the original Avatar series?

Has anyone here started with Korra and not gone and seen the original series?

kind of don't want to watch Downton Abbey if I can avoid it... ^_^;;

You can definitely watch Korra without seeing Aang's avatar first. In fact it probably is better so the disappointment with Book 2 isn't as harsh.

Book 1 is almost as good as what the original avatar had going for it.

As for Downton Abbey it was good show. You shouldn't watch what's going on now but you could have her rewatch the first 2 seasons. That's the best they've made. It's all downhill from there.

Does anyone else feel like they reused animation from Book 1 during the part where
the firebenders are sparring with Korra? Except for the part where they beat her this time...

Cost cutting?

Maybe, but I don't feel like it took away from anything. It's pretty useful for showing the difference between season 1-4 Korra.
