Is Halo still relevant?

First things first I'm a huge fan of the Halo series but as I'm contemplating getting an Xbone for the MCC I was wondering if Halo is still the juggernaut that it was ten years ago? How much of Halo 4's drop in multiplayer population due to the controversial changes to MP or is Halo's time as a premier shooter series over due to the popularity of games like COD and Battlefield? Will Halo 5 be a system seller for the Xbone or will it only sell to Halo fans?

I'd say yes, but not to the extant it was 8 years ago.

sadly, I personally believe Halo 3 was the peak of the franchise as a whole

MCC is relevant. Whether Halo continues to be remotely as relevant in the future largely depends on Halo 5.

On the...plus?...side, after Destiny I'm no longer 100% sure Bungie would have made a vastly better game than 343. Whether 343 makes a game half as good as Halo CE remains to be seen.

It was already kind of loosing it's popularity before Halo 4, but they still had a dedicated fanbase that still played. However, they seemed to loose a lot of those people with Halo 4 by trying to change a working formula. Honestly, I don't even give a fuck about Halo 5. If it comes out and there's lots of praise I will give it a shot, but future Halo will never live up to Halo 1-3. If Halo 5 doesn't return to what made Halo great in the first place, I can see MCC outselling it. I really hope 343 took a clue with Halo 4 and learned from their mistakes.

Sci-Fi shooters in general don't seem to hold lasting interest these days. Maybe laser blasts and hulking armor just aren't as satisfying as bullets.

You are already debating buying a $400 console for a Halo game and you are asking if it's still relevant?

I'm pretty positive the answer is yes, and I'm sure there are plenty of other people who will be buying an Xbox One this Holiday just so that they can play the Halo MCC.

Yes. It's the one big game that is imminent for XBO.

It has a lot to prove, but it is very relevant. Halo 5 being good is a huge deal for MS. Gears next iteration is far out.

Halo MCC will be the first game I have bought for my XBO Day 1 Edition since launch.

As someone else said it's not as relevant as it used to be but a great Halo 5 could put it back at the forefront(?).

It probably just doesn't count as THE top dog for FPSes sales-wise anymore like it did pre-CoD, but it's still absolutely a relevant game series.

Nah. Halo died when it went from saving the galaxy as a single badass to dealing with your feelings while trying to bang the hot blue chick living in your head.

Halo is dead. The brand is on life support.

Id have to say no,
Once cod 4 dropped,
Me and my fam could not,
And we really did try,
To go back to halo 3.
Reach and 4 didnt do the franchise any good either.
Honestly I dont know why people are excited for halo mcc,
There is a reason we quit playing them,
And now they are going to play them back to back?
Is ms trying to incur franchise fatigue in one swoop instead of gradually?

I think MCC is still relevant because it is a return to the older favourites. Halo 4 definitely turned some away and other franchises have been hording players for quite a while now. Whether Halo remains relevant I think will depend on Halo 5 and future games. As it is I think people are losing interest but not to the point it has become irrelevant.

Halo, along with CoD and GTA are the biggest releases in the video game industry.

Halo is DEFINITELY still relevant.

One MEDIOCRE release of Halo isn't going to change anything. Word of mouth for the amazing-ness that is the MCC will travel and Halo 5 will be huge :D

I think CoD releasing new mainline entries every year has certainly hurt it. And also Battlefield being more relevant on console has also hurt. Combine that with poor long-term reception for the last numbered game and yeah the series isn't reallg as relevant around the time of 2 or even 3.

Halo will never be as it was since Bungie isn't developing it. It'll be good, it has good developers behind it but just won't be as good as it would be if Bungie was behind it. Same with Gears of War.

Are you on mobile? Curious to why you type like this.

Halo is still a juggernaut. I'd argue it is the most relevant non-nintendo first party brand.

Also, Halo 4's campaign was great, one of the best in the series. The multiplayer they faultered a bit but I'm sure they learned from it.

Mediocre? Really?

The first three games were some of the most popular first person shooters of their day, were genuine system sellers and helped popularize online console shooters and multimedia integration.

The next iterations will sell in the millions but surely won't have the influence of their predecessors.

I wouldn't say it's irrelevant. It's still a huge Xbox exclusive. If not the biggest (I can't think of any 'bigger')

But. Competition from third party titles such as Call of Duty, Battlefield and Destiny and whatever else, I think makes it a little less relevant overall. It's no longer the face of consoler shooters as I'd like to think it once was

Of course. It likely won't have near the same pull as Halo 3 did (talking about Halo 5) but it should still do well. 343 does need to prove themselves though, so far the best thing they've done is remaster games made by another developer, that doesn't exactly speak well of them.

I started and stopped caring with Halo 3.

I'd say it's still a relevant series though but it doesn't really have that 'aura' that surrounded it for Halo 2/3.

I really don't understand why people put Bungie on so high of a pedestal, like no other dev could ever make a game as good. Isn't 343 made up of a bunch of ex-Bungie guys anyways?

If Microsoft hadn't told them to go after the "COD crowd" with Halo:Reach, I'm sure the series would be almost as popular as it was when Halo 3 launched.

But, they made Halo:Reach. I liked it for what it was and I know a lot of people loved it, but I hated it as a Halo title. I think 343 will knock it out of the park with Halo 5.
