All these years later and they're just adding text chat. But really, they have such an impossible hill to climb to become relevant.
- one of the most popular games in the world is exclusive to EGS
- other big games that used to be on steam are now exclusive like rocket league
- have spent a fortune giving away free games the past few years rather than spending money advertising (smart IMO)
- moneyhatted exclusives and pissed people off (dumb IMO)
- all the big chinese gacha games are on EGS and many are not on steam, for instance Genshin and ZZZ
All this and nobody cares. Kingdom Hearts was exclusive for a long time and I feel many people didn't even know there were PC ports, then when they got steam releases they showed up on NPD charts.
Steam is just so entrenched and not just in the West but also extremely popular in Asia. If EGS is just now implementing text chat how long would it be for things like steam workshop and community controller layouts?
I know people hate EGS but I want Valve to have viable competition. Too much is riding on Gabe. Once he is gone everything is up in the air. Valve could go public and be beholden to shareholders or get swallowed up by a bigger company, or his son could take over and everything could continue as normal. Who the fuck knows. Either way it's not a good thing that they have no relevant competition.
So what do you do? Seems they are back to moneyhatting exclusives like Lords of the Fallen 2, ensuring it will flop on PC. But I don't even know what they can do. Release their own handheld for everyone to play their 500 free games? Make single player games? Moneyhat bigger exclusives? What would you do?
