Pretend for a minute you’re Tim Sweeney. How do you make EGS relevant?

BennyBlanco

aka IMurRIVAL69

All these years later and they're just adding text chat. But really, they have such an impossible hill to climb to become relevant.

- one of the most popular games in the world is exclusive to EGS
- other big games that used to be on steam are now exclusive like rocket league
- have spent a fortune giving away free games the past few years rather than spending money advertising (smart IMO)
- moneyhatted exclusives and pissed people off (dumb IMO)
- all the big chinese gacha games are on EGS and many are not on steam, for instance Genshin and ZZZ

All this and nobody cares. Kingdom Hearts was exclusive for a long time and I feel many people didn't even know there were PC ports, then when they got steam releases they showed up on NPD charts.

Steam is just so entrenched and not just in the West but also extremely popular in Asia. If EGS is just now implementing text chat how long would it be for things like steam workshop and community controller layouts?

I know people hate EGS but I want Valve to have viable competition. Too much is riding on Gabe. Once he is gone everything is up in the air. Valve could go public and be beholden to shareholders or get swallowed up by a bigger company, or his son could take over and everything could continue as normal. Who the fuck knows. Either way it's not a good thing that they have no relevant competition.

So what do you do? Seems they are back to moneyhatting exclusives like Lords of the Fallen 2, ensuring it will flop on PC. But I don't even know what they can do. Release their own handheld for everyone to play their 500 free games? Make single player games? Moneyhat bigger exclusives? What would you do?

Imo literally start cloning steam; add reviews, charts, community forums, mod workshops, steam-gram etc. Also built in an opt-in seamless library where it detects games already installed that can all be launched from it like the xbox pc app.

Steam has competition - they start fucking things up people will easily and quickly move elsewhere.

There is no way. Just focus on making Fortnite as profitable as possible. This is strictly a Fortnite launcher.

But even if they had all those features, they are still missing 10s of thousands of games that are on Steam and not on EGS. Sure you could launch them from EGS but you didn't make money. Same problem MS is about to have.

The same way Sony beat MS. Great exclusives. Steam fanboys cri ertiem. I couldn't care less about those features you mentioned, I care about games. Lords of the Fallen 2 is day one baby.

It's weird how many PC gamers have EGSDS, I never really suffered from it myself. I just get my games wherever it makes sense to on the day, who gives a crap what store it's on.

They have tried this though. Alan Wake 2, FF7R, Kingdom Hearts, Borderlands 3, Fortnite, Genshin, Rocket League, etc etc etc

Epic doesn't need to build their own handhelds, because all Windows and Xbox handhelds currently and future Xbox Magnus consoles will fully accommodate the Epic ecosystem.

They shouldn't waste money on timed exclusives either. What they need to do is publish more games, big, small, doesn't matter. Publish on 4 ecosystems, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, Epic. With proper full ecosystem support across form factors including mobile.

So the games they publish for Xbox should be Play Anywhere, Handheld Optimized, Cloud Enabled for xCloud and GFN. That way, the Steam users who still wouldn't use Epic store might be more willing to use the Xbox Play Anywhere variant. Like how FortNite is Play Anywhere now. Epic should start doing more native Windows on ARM64 builds too. Then have ARM64 native Android and eventually iOS versions.

Tim Sweeney once said, he will put their games on any store that has 12% store cut, so do just that. Start with Xbox PC store since both Epic and Xbox PC (MS Store) have 12% cut. Just publish more good quality games that Epic owns permanent rights to. Then let the chips fall where they may.

It's not about the individual features. Epic would have to adopt a completely different culture. People love Steam because Valve feels like what a group of game enthusiasts would do if they set out to make the best store front. Epic feels like just another big company faced on quarterly profits in service of yearly bonuses. Epic is beholden to their investors, even if they aren't a publicly traded company.

I give a crap on what store I get my games.

I want my gaming library in one spot. One account. Not scattered around multiple storefronts. it's basic quality of life

Lower price compared to buying Steam keys on key sites, that is it, store features don't matter at all despite the rhetoric from EGS haters.

This is the issue. Everyone is so entrenched in one ecosystem already that they're afraid to move anywhere else.

That's not the issue at all. And as far as I'm concerned there isn't an issue to begin with.

People aren't "afraid to move," they just don't see a reason to. Being entrenched doesn't magically make other options better.

There's always the Ingvar Kamprad solution, create a non-profit foundation to run the company according to a set of ethical guidelines & principles.
It worked for IKEA.

A company being publicity traded is not the norm.

Oh, and if I were Sweeney, I'd get a hair transplant like, yesterday.
There's no reason to look like this when you're a billionaire
Either shave it all off or fix it, my guy

2025 and Steam still doesn't have a cashback system. Gabe is a dinosaur.
They have something more fun and that can give u more money back than the traditional fidelity points that usually expire, that are the trading cards that you can sell. Not all games have them though. They also have the steam points you get after every purchase, but those can only be spent on steam cosmetics stuff.

Overall Steam has much better community feautures that make ppl engage more with the platform. PC is a open platform and i hate when storefronts moneyhat exclusives. Im not installing ur shitty launcher, want to make it relevant, start working on better community feautures to make ppl want to engage with your platform. Paying for exclusives will just make me want to stay away.

It's next to impossible to make a product relevant when you:
  1. don't understand or care about what the people using the product are looking for; and you
  2. don't give a shit about making your product better.
People have said what they want out of EGS for literally years. Tim Sweeney sucks dick and would rather sue everyone into oblivion in the hopes that he could profit off of successful lawsuits instead of just putting that lawyer money into EGS and making it a more viable option.

Also, a ton of people hate him solely for all the exclusivity agreements. That shit wasn't commonplace on PC before EGS. The best thing Tim Sweeney could do is sell or give EGS to someone who actually cares about gaming; someone who has the ability and the desire to put effort into the storefront.

Merge with GOG and embrace their DRM-free policies and preservation program. This is the only way they can be relevant but they will not commit to it because they value control.

And for consoles? I don't see what else Epic has to do. If some titles weren't Epic only then people would just stick with Steam.
Consoles always been closed platforms and thers only 1 storefront on consoles, and even on console we are starting to see less and less exclusives. PC is an open platform, i dont want to have multiple launchers on my computer. EGS already does a great thing for devs by having the lowest fees, they need to work on better and more interesting community feautures if they want to atract more users. The free games thing they have is also a good thing, moneyhatting exclusives is not.

Yeah. Also, there is a fight to be on our desktops. It's blatantly obvious to me.
Btw, only NeoGAF gets to be on my desktop notifications. Fuck everything else.
I treat my desktop like it were my virtual home and I don't want junk all over the place.

Heck. I have no background image or anything, just an all
Black background. Very sterile.

Spend some of that infinite Fortnite money in free games, coupons, exclusive games and an anti-Steam smear campaign via every big outlet and every irrelevant indie I give a super deal they can't refuse for their shitty game to apparently, while avoiding making an ace platform for users to enjoy🤷‍♂️

You want competition for fear of what Steam may become after Gabe is gone like everyone else at Valve currently and in the future hates what he's been doing and your solution to that is to hope a platform that's doing everything wrong since its inception and its boss is so unhinged grows bigger?
