PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | October 2014

I believe there's a thread around here somewhere with PS Now impressions. It's worked very well for me so far. tried it at E3 too on the PS TV and I couldn't feel any lag. I'm curious to see if the same thing applies when I use it today.

All the impressions thus far are PS4 though, right? Vita would potentially have more lag, but I can honestly say most of the streaming tech goes way over my head so I'm not sure.

TOTP: Buy Don't Starve if you like figuring things out for yourself instead of using spoon fed tutorials.

I'd say these are accurate. I enjoyed my time with the game. The writing actually isn't as awful as it initially seems, and the combat system I thought was interesting. However, the game is super repetitive and nothing is really great about it. If you want a better game, play persona. if you want fan service, play NepReb, if you want VN play literally any well known VN.

Okay, buying based on 'interesting combat system' (I'm easy to convince when it comes to vita games).

I don't like the Persona games. I don't care one way or the other about fan service. I don't like VNs at all... I got through VLR for the escape puzzles and gave up on Danganaropa after the first chapter (Velocity 2x and now Natural Doctrine stole my heart). I want to get back to Danganaropa at some point, I guess.

Wow the Playstation TV store is an epic disaster in NA. There's a classics category that contains a random assortment of PS1 classics, Minis and PSP games, and yet Alundra, one of my favorite games ever, is not on it. But can be downloaded through my download list.

Man, I think I'm just a lot more forgiving than many of you. A couple mistakes out of hundreds of games just... doesn't rate as 'epic disaster' to me. More like... standard for almost any product release by any major company.

As for them all being in the same category, I can almost hear the debate in the various meetings, where some marketing guru thought separating them out into ps1/psp/mini folders would be too complex for casual gamers and so just lumping them into 'classics' was the way to go.

But NepReb has very little fanservice...even less than Conception, not the 2nd game. I have a hard time believing anyone could play NepReb for fanservice alone.

Well if you've got the cash to throw around, go for it. The combat system is an odd kind of position-based turn based system. Against weaker enemies you can basically steamroll but some of the boss fights I actually thought were a lot of fun cause you had to plan ahead. I'd say for 20$ if you're just looking for something to pass the time is fine. The VN bits will probably make you roll your eyes though ahaha. (thankfully you can just mash through most of the scenes)

I wouldn't say it doesn't have fan service, but you're definitely right in saying that it's not the same sort as Conception. Poor example, my bad.

???

We're talking about Conception 2 aren't we? I've never played NepReb. I'm only picking up Conception 2 now because it hit my $20ish price range.

I have the store credit to throw around. More importantly, I know if they put it on sale for $15 on psn I'd buy it, and so spending $20 now for a physical copy I can resell if i hate it is actually cheaper for me in the long run, not even considering the credit angle.

PSNow is coming to Vita this week?

Any word on performance/lineup/cost/space requirements?

I found performance to be really solid on my wired ps4 -- felt native to me. It'll be wireless on vita, but there's a lot less data (lower res) so... hopefully it's as impressive. On a wired PSTV I bet it's as good as a PS4.

Lineup - same as current selection on existing devices, I'd think?

Cost -- see above

Space reqs -- it's essentially a glorified video streamer, so I'd guess it shouldn't be much (if any) bigger than the other streaming apps on vita. All the real heavy lifting is done server side.

Yes. My post meant to the one say that buy NepReb for fanservice. It even has less fanservice than Conception, and Conception II went much more on the fanservice side than the first game.

Most people play NepReb because it's a fun game with fun characters and humor. Nothing ground breaking, but I know for sure they are not there just for the fanservice.

Was it so, that you can buy Vita TV (in western world) only in black colour? White would be so much better colour for that little TV called Vita. Playstation tv as for colour black & as for name sounds so niche product.

Would be curious to know how many has thought: PS TV, ooh whats that, is it new enhanced Sony Bravia. Oh well, PS TV is luckily not so cluster f*cked name than WiiU.

I'm guessing zero people.

Also; black is the standard colour for PlayStation devices PS2 and later, not sure why anyone would expect different.

I was talking to my friend tonight and I told him I was excited for the PSTV launch. His response? "What's that?"

He's a gamer too. hell, he OWNS a PS Vita. Does the PSTV even have commercials?

You simply cannot compare 999 to Danganronpa in terms of quality. They do things similarly, with the death games, they both have puzzles, they both are VNs, but you simply cannot compare. They are both great games that have their own strengths in their own way. It's so hard for me to actually come out and say "I like this series better" because they are both amazing series that are so equal, yet so different.

The wait for a VLR3 announcement is killing me slowly. DR will most likely see more titles coming out, it is a pretty popular series now. I just don't get how VLR didn't appeal to the japanese market, how it seemingly got better received here, rather than there.

To me Danganronpa is really good, a great story and decent gameplay. Hooked me really well so I played the game in several big hour chunks, pretty much a chapter every time I got a chance to really sit down with it. Very good, and I'm glad I played and finished it just before I started having no time for massive sit down play sessions (with a new college term and stuff).

999 was a lot better for "pick up and play" mode for me. It's a much better, "portable" game I think, since it is comprised of much less story in between the gameplay bits, and the gameplay itself is very engaging, but also easy to stop on a dime. I can't imagine having to stop a trial in Danganronpa to get off at a bus stop. That sounds awful, totally breaks the flow in my opinion. But stopping a puzzle, brewing on it during the time that you can't actually play it, then returning to it even hours later did not detract from the experience for me.

In addition to the much better gameplay (at the very least, the much better "portable gameplay"), I think ultimately 999 had a better story in my opinion. (I'm going to be talking about the stories of both games, so anyone reading this who wants to keep both stories fresh should ignore the next two paragraphs.)

*BEWARE End Game Spoilers for Danganronpa 1 follow*
The whole despair thing was a big mindfuck, and I liked that, but... The mastermind's motivation seemed pretty much nill, and that really drained a lot of my narrative enthusiasm. I want my mindfuckery to have a purpose and meaning, and sensible origin if you will.
Maybe my opinion was lowered because I expected more after being vaguely spoiled about a thing or two.

However... *BEWARE End Game Spoilers for 999 follow*
The whole origin of Zero, the pseudo-science concepts, and the emotional core of the game really appealed to me. A lot more than anything in Danganronpa. Even though I really liked all the various wacky personalities in Danganronpa, and I'd like to see them again, I feel like in 999 I came to care a lot about the people in this game. They weren't super fleshed out, but their struggle was a lot more human than most things in Danganronpa.
Thankfully any spoilers I came across happened literally minutes before they occurred in the game, so not too bad there.

Anyways, those are my thought comparing Danganronpa and 999. Just thought I'd elaborate on what I said earlier, since I didn't want to just state my opinion without justification. Someone needs to make a community thread for both games though, but I guess I'd want to avoid those till beating the second games in both cases...

Oh, as for Danganronpa versus Zero Escape popularity in Japan, I think maybe there's a chance it was affected by the platform choice of each game. PSP probably was a bit more of a comfortable home for the visual novel genre, and Danganronpa's energetic presentation makes it stand out more. Comparatively, 999 probably failed to have a sufficiently adequate marketing campaign I'd guess, and I'd also say that its art style probably was seen as perhaps too realistic/boring. The fact it was on the DS while also appearing to be quite a dark game prevented many kids from playing it.

Also, if I'm being slightly unfair, Danganronpa is very easy in comparison to 999. Wouldn't really change the balance of popularity between US and Japan, but it probably didn't help either side who got confused on 999, to pick up VLR when it came around. I think it's also possible that with the Vita shortage of games in the US, that VLR was taken notice of more closely than in Japan, and I would think that a Japanese audience might be less inclined to jump into an entry in a series before playing its prequel "so to speak". A lot of fans were probably pulled in by VLR, and its possible Japanese folks interested in the game were perhaps just more well informed, and decided not to jump on to a sequel to an "obscure DS game".

I wonder if Singapore will get PSNow
with our infrastructure - more and more families are on fiber connection now - it should be possible

Does Sony even officially support Singapore?

yes Flandy. what kind of question is that? lol.

we had a PlayStation 4 launch event - freebies like PS+ subscriptions, PSTVs were given out.

Xperia is doing pretty okay here as well (almost every other person here uses a smartphone)

in sheer numbers, the Singapore market is small. so we are often regarded together with the rest of Southeast Asia (but honestly, the internet infrastructure here in Singapore/Malaysia is much better than most parts of the US)

Vita download list isn't borked huh...
ah well let's see what's on sale this Tuesday/Wednesday I want SNK's PSP games to go on sale already...

I wouldn't mind finally picking up Baseball Stars super cheap, even though it's always cheap... just been putting it off.

I pre-ordered my PS TV from Wal-Mart to get the extra Sly Cooper game voucher... skimped on shipping, so it won't get here til next week probably. No rush anyway... I still didn't buy a TV to even hook it up to. Might wait til black friday or cyber monday for once.

there are so many improvements that would be great on PSN/Download List
sigh.

(1) PS4esque Library feature on Vita to help with DLCs downloading/organizations and serve as a Steam-like system for all your games
(2) Indicators - Indicate whether the game is something you bought or got for free on PS+

so I got some PSN space bucks and I am looking at a few games (probably going to pick up two atleast) and I wanted to get some thoughts from Vita gaf

I am looking at:

Sword Art Online
Toukiden
One Piece Unlimited world Red
and Rogue Legacy

I am pretty much brand new to One Piece and am trying to figure out the best way to tackle that stuff (probably going to start watching the show soonish) but it looks like a nice and colorful beatem up. Toukiden I am alittle hestiant on because I have read that there might be an expanded version coming so i'm not sure if its worth buying the current one.

I really like RPGs though so Sword Art looks like it could fill that itch nicely, and I like the anime more than I thought I would. I wish Oreshika had a date but I have not seen anything, and I have heard Conception is really bad.

I also keep debating on Danganronpa but I have not really ever bothered with Visual Novels before so I'm on the fence with those.

Anyone know if there's a way to filter by games with preloading? I think every day 1 digital 'big' release has had it, but I'd like to check on a few things.

Flying Get info:

GarakeGK has mentioned that there'd be a new "plus" announcement and releases on 1/22, while mentioning that he has yet to platinum "Ar no".

There can only be one: Final Fantasy Type-0 Plus!

GarakeGK cryptically posts stuff before magazines get released. He's usually earlier than most other "leakers". Sometimes weeks earlier.

You won't hear of him unless you go to actual JP boards or go to blogs that posts his recent escapades.

inb4 anyone believes FFType0 Plus, lolololol.

Isn't he FurageGK (フラゲGK)?

Obviously he refers to an Atelier game, but i hope it's something new to Vita.

Which games were free for PS4 this month in Singapore? Do you guys get the same stuff as HK? We got Sportsfriends, Spelunky and PixCat.

yeap same as HK. lol. Asia PS+ covers all of us.

(though I subscribe to US PS+ only cause I like the selection and games better)

Escha & Logy would be the next, right?
Yes
Psssh, don't tell everyone.
I still hope it's something new for Vita

Adding the digital number, isn't it pretty huge for a Vita title? Usually with Vita games, shipped is almost equivalent as sold, right? I don't think they are shipping that many copies of a Vita game without any order.
400k should be retail only and in EU SAO:HF is not even retail(right?)

Downloading the Brutal legend deemo from the HK sstore, I always wanted to try it

FYI the game is bugged; if you reach a certain % in the game's progress by the end game, like you've completed 70% or higher of all missions and collectables, the game will no longer load your save data when you are in the final area.
This was never patched cuz the game didn't sell well at he time.
Get it off Steam/GOG when its on sale.
