Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Just bought this: EVGA Superclocked GTX 970

Anyone own this card? How is it?

Yup! Currently running it at +80MHz boost (over the factory OC, so ~250 over reference clocking) with an i5-3350P OCed to 3.7GHz, which results in:

zzSfmRI.png

Other notes:

I'm using it in a living room, so I've raised the base fan speed from 0 (with their recent BIOS update) to 5%. This allows me to keep my case fans low enough to where the whole thing is effectively silent when playing non-taxing games. Even while doing benchmarks / heavier games, it is *very* quiet. I've not heard any coil whine, but I'm ~8ft from the PC, and my case (Define R4) is pretty quiet as is.

I'm pretty happy with it, and the reduced noise levels alone have made it a worthwhile upgrade from my reference GTX 770.

You can overclock the i5-330P? I didn't think it was possible to overclock a non-K Intel CPU. My friend has that CPU and if this is the case, and could do much better with an overlocked 3350p...

Woo, just got my amazon shipping notice for 2 Gigabyte G1 970s.
Was ordered on the 5th, should be here in 2 days.

I was going to place an order for the gigabyte g1 970 on the 4th... but I didn't. Ouch... patience is a great virtue, isn't it?

Definitely feels good to have waited it out. Been reading up on SLI issues since i've been an AMD since I replaced my NV6800ultra and it seems like SLI support is still hit or miss (granted so is crossfire).

Hopefully NVSurround will be as awesome as my experience with eyefinity has been.

With a suitable mobo chipset (like the Z77, which is what I have) you can change the multiplier / bus clock, as shown here: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Proces...ssor-Review-No-Integrated-Graphics/Overclocki

It's not nearly as easy/flexible as with a -K CPU, but it works, and a bump from 3.3GHz turbo to 3.7 is fine by me! :)

It's been a long wait (it'll be 1 month from the day I ordered to the estimated delivery date), but I'll be joining you guys soon, NvidiaGAF :-)

I probably won't be able to get the second one until next year, with the demand for these cards is nowhere near satiated.

Actually you probably can get one of these by walking to any PC shop in Australia, and paying an astronomical sum of $840 AUD. o_0

Switched from Gigabyte to MSI for stock reasons. Hope the non UK based return service doesn't come to bite me. I am banking on me not owning these in a years time anyway.

My GTX 970 shipped on Oct 2nd from Newegg.ca.. based on tracking, it's still a few days out. F'ing ridiculous when they say 2-7 Business days. So frustrating when you pay $12 for shipping and it takes this bloody long. At this rate it will be obsolete by the time I get it.

Ordered an MSI 970. Told the guy that I'm in no hurry, it should be here for the last week November I think. I just hope he won't mark up the price to an insane amount. :lol

really loving going back to older games (and even new games) and ramping up the DSR. UE3 games look great at super high resolutions.

Mine left LA on the 7th, 2 days later it was in Vancouver, now no update... Hopefully it get's to Quebec soon enough.

Oct 7, 2014 20:35 Los Angeles - Lax Departed sort facility

Wish it shipped from Ontario as they normally do. Ordered a monitor for work, it got here in less then a day...

Going to get a " small " boost from my upgrade when I am able to do it lol

Current is Radeon 6770. I've settled on the GTX 970 as my upgrade.

Yeh my I5-2400 is OC'ed to 3.9Ghz. Just had to jump into the BIOS and change the frequency to 39. Can't go into the 40's though. Retail is 3.1Ghz and OC is 3.9Ghz. My MOBO has integrated OC'ing. Can just hit a button and get as high as 3.6Ghz.

I wonder if I just got lucky with my EVGA 970s (short pcb) in that I got no coil whine from either card, or if my "older" ears just can't hear it (late 30s).

I did have a 7970 2 years ago with audible coil whine if my speakers weren't on and I was playing games.

Yay. Dispatched, but it is coming from France. Wtf.

3/3. Can you try it on a different system?
Maybe later. So I have both installed now. Amazing performance!

The top card is getting a lot hotter than the bottom card. Constantly at 80°C in games while the bottom card is at 60-70°C. Is that normal?

My Corsair Air 540 case has a pretty good airflow.

What type of spacing do you have between the cards and what type of cooler is it using?

Could using the same brand of PSU/GPU help coil whine at all?

Would me having an EVGA GTX 970 and an EVGA Supernova Gold PSU be beneficial at all, or it is just a crap shoot?

There is a space of 4cm between the two cards and they look like this:

I know that it's not ideal for SLI, but it should work too.

That's 1.5 inches of space, that should be enough for those fans to cool the card as long as there is good airflow coming form the rest of the case.

Can you get pictures of the cards in your case and your specific setup?

I'm also having Gigabyte 970 coil whine RMA woes and also currently have two in my system. The top one is more in the mid-high 70s in demanding games with the bottom 10C cooler. It's pretty normal, though I suppose our experience shows coil whine is "normal" too. I've got them in a Phantom 410 with an AF140 sidefan exhausting out to help.

The top card is likely to be hotter, it's doing more work sometimes and heat also rises from the lower one.

Are these cards really that prompt to coil whine? I got the evga super-super-clocked and I really only heard coil whine once in my first stress test, five minutes out of the box, and haven't heard it again in the last couple of weeks.

Well that doesn't bode well for mine..

Mine left LAX on the 2nd. Arrived in Vancouver on the 6th, and only last night decided to show up at a Moncton sorting facility where it has sat all day today and not scanned for release. I'd bet mine doesn't come before Monday at the earliest. Unless I'm lucky and it jumps on a plane to St. John's or something despite being ground. :/

Newegg will definitely be refunding me the shipping charge. Most of my orders from Hong Kong come faster than this.

I got the same card in SLI. My top card peaks at 76c and lingers around 70c. The bottom is like 65c. I wish I could cool it better.

This is my setup

Went to Microcenter last week picked up the ASUS 970 to replace my 560Ti and super happy. My HTPC is Almost completely silent now. The only noise is from the cpu cooler which I need to change. I can finally tackle my ridiculous Steam backlog and complete the Witcher 2 in all of its glory.

My Corsair Air 540 case has a pretty good airflow.

Hot air rises, so in a normal case the bottom card will heat up the air that is then sucked in by the top card. And when you have these cards with a cooler that does not blow out the air in the back, there is even more heat around them.

So it's not optimal, but it is the kind of temps you have to expect in a setup like that.

I didn't easily find any info on this - how do you update the bios on an evga 970?

So are all 970s on backorder until late November or is that just an over estimation and they're slowly getting stock in?

Ordered mine the 5th, the shipment I'm getting from came in on the 13th. Will be delivered the 15th.

All likelihood, shipments will trickle in.

Thats good, thanks.

The Zotac and EVGA versions of the 970 are in stock right now at Newegg.

Also good. I want the MSI one and I have a boatload of Amazon credit so thats where Im holding out. I just really want it before Dragon Age 3.

Ah, so I should install that before installing any graphic drivers?

Edit: It shipped!

\o/

Regarding the order of installation: the link explains how to uninstall any existing drivers before you flash the BIOS. If you're coming from a different Nvidia card (as I was), you just plug in the new card, boot, uninstall the existing driver, flash the BIOS, etc.

Cool - thanks for the info! I have the ACX 1.0, which doesn't have a driver update yet.

I'm pretty happy with the card altogether - running a stable +76 on GPU and +100 on Memory. The fans are not silent, but not bad, and coil whine is only noticable if I'm pushing high framerates without any sound or music on.

So basically, I've been playing the crap out of Shadow of Mordor and loving it. Over 60fps 1080p on Ultra (normal high textures) and of course I'm playing that with sound on :)

still waiting on my second 970, I was told it would be here this week, but I fail to believe anything I hear in this shitbag country

especially when I see them still out of stock all over the world

I've read that Purolator is pretty bad at updating tracking information. And it sure lookslike it. My tracking showed Left LA 7th - Arrived at Vancouver 9th - Left Vancouver 9th all showed up at the same time a few hours after it left Vancouver.
