She does a web based video series called "Tropes versus women" where she points out potentially harmful tropes that are used against women in video games.

"Gamergate" is a name assholes on the internet use to justify being absolutely horroble sub-human pieces of shit to any female working in or near the games industry mostly by sending them death threats or posting their private information (address, private phone numbers etc) online and claiming there is a conspiracy by games journalists to give favourable reviews and coverage to females because they get sex from it.

In short, cunts being cunts to women because they are cunts and use shit like twitter to spead their cuntish message.

Edit: Yes I mad. Ignorant pricks going online and threatening women in gaming because they are women annoys me. Weird huh?

It's not a coincidence that the threats against Sarkeesian began in earnest when she began speaking up about feminism as it relates to videogames.

Also, please enlighten us all as to what "Gamergate" truly represents.

So people keep associating this incident to the gamergate movement, is there any hard evidence that links them or it's just a narrative fitting made up bullshit?
 
Slightly off topic, but I'm curious. What would happen if the president decided to give a speech at Utah State University? Would people be allowed to carry concealed firearms in to the event?
 
What really surprises me is that someone as mild as Sarkeesian can bring out this much vitriol. She's an incredibly moderate critic who seems to go out of her way to assuage those who disagree with her. The fact that her criticisms would make someone want to issue death threats - and possibly carry them out - speaks to how unhinged some of her opponents are.

As for this law, I don't know the specifics of it, but if the police and university are actually adhering to it, then it's nonsense. There's no way you can prohibit a gun ban in a specific venue at a specific time that's in response to an established threat. That's insane, and if true, the law needs to be overturned immediately. This is like the second amendment version of yelling fire in a crowded theater. There's no way that a temporary gun ban in a specific venue is an infringement on anyone's second amendment rights.

I'm guessing not, but who knows. I do know that when Obama came to UW-Madison that there were at least a half-dozen snipers on all the buildings nearby, and that people had to go through metal detectors and pat-downs.

I had only the most basic knowledge of what this #gamergate thing is so I looked it up. Seems like just a 4chan-created meme that people have blown up into a full on twitter phenomenon? I thought it was about game journalists who were caught sleeping with indie developers or vice versa or something. Now it's about murdering YouTubers?

No. It's a movement built on misogyny and hypocrisy. Not every member of gamergate is violent or misogynist but I'd say a majority hold views that most people would find ugly. If sane gamers want to address whatever beefs they have with the so called gaming media they should probably create a separate movement, because lord knows gamergate has an ugly taint that is being exposed to the entire world right now. And the FBI.
 
The police decision seems to be in accordance with Utah law. The policy is absurd, but you can't expect the cops to intentionally go against the rules and expose themselves to liability.

Anita has to fear for her own safety because of her opinions and activism. That reality is the truly disgusting part of this situation.

Disagreeing with an idea (via debate, babble, vitriol, or otherwise) is one thing - your right. Threats of violence are another level entirely. I sincerely hope that the disturbed individual(s) responsible get the help they need.

But it is an infringement upon the law. The exact same law the police are sworn to uphold.

Deciding laws is not in the hands of the police; it's in the hands of the people and their elected officials. The police did right in this case.
 
Jesus fucking christ, I could not imagine giving a speech where the audience is free to carry firearms. Permit or no permit, no permit guarantees that "the wielder of this gun will NOT have a bad day, *ever*".

Well people who use the #gamergate bullshit often insult or threaten women in gaming online. Anita is a woman involved in gaming online who receives death threats. Kinda seems like a link there.

Maybe not directly linked as the #gamergate bullshit is to do with female developers and how they allegedly give sex away for reviews coverage and Anita isn't a dev. They probably come up with the same argument and just say for views on videos or something.

For people who tend to get confused about this definition: being unable to speak due to actual threats of violence against your person and your audience is what actual censorship looks like

But the people of Utah have the right to carry concealed weapons. What I'm getting at is they would allow increased security and infringement of the state's resident's rights for one person, but not for another.

I was asking because there might be some federal laws involving the president that mandate exceptions or something that I don't know about.
 
I dont understand game culture at all anymore. Even reading the game gate thread in the gaming section...It is like people are on a different planet.

Well, here's a way we can test this empirically: Go on to Twitter and search for how actual #Gamergaters are reacting to the cancellation. Are they by and large 1) denouncing the death threats and expressing empathy for the fact that Sarkeesian has been made to feel physically unsafe in public, or 2) insisting that the threat must have been planted by Sarkeesian herself to draw attention and anyway she didn't have anything valuable to say and it's a good thing someone shut her up?
 
That's one way to get around all that nasty free speech nonsense. Threaten their lives and bring guns. Then hide behind their gun laws to convince themselves that they're in the right to do this.
 
So if Obama came around, they wouldn't take away or scan for firearms?

I understand the decision not to speak. Sure, plenty of speakers in the past who have had many threats on their lives didn't let those stop them, but this I guess isn't quite like other speakers. :/

The thing with this gamer gate bullshit is that even if there was a shred of actual well thought out reason in it (there wasn't, it's a blanket to shit on females in game by making up a link between female developers and press contacts giving favourable reviews and coverage) the people hiding under the blanket are reprehensible pieces of shit using it as a way to insult women by pretending to care about the state of the industry.

The funny thing about those who don't want Anita to give a speech is they claim to defend free speech and are supposedly fighting against censorship, not realizing that what Anita does is simply criticize video games for problematic representation of women exercising her right to free speech and here we have those gamergate bullies actually censoring her right to free speech with death threats, the irony of it hurts and infuriates me.

It's trumped-up bullshit based on a conspiracy that never happened perpetuated by morons who think polygon and kotaku are actual respected "journalism" sites and that they're on some sort of righteous crusade for pointing out that they write bad articles, while a legion of assholes make threats and various sexist bullshit while hiding behind the tag. It's inherently tainted from its very origin, so why not make an actual movement rather than trying to redeem the joke that is "gamergate?"
