Fighting Games Weekly | Oct 13-19 | The World Ends Ryu

For folks wanting to know exactly what is up with the USF4 PC version now:

1) There is now far less Waiting For Opponents message spam and stutter in general.
2) However, the "fix" for this was to simply make it harder for those messages to pop up - i.e. they made the game more willing to lag before it throws a red flag and tries to sort out the connection.
3) When searching for lobbies, the game will freeze several times.

There has been no netcode fix. There has been a number modified in the netcode to make the game happier about the lag. And there are now new issues to make online on PC even more unpleasent than it was pre-patch - issues that were in the PC Beta and widely reported.

I was thinking of getting USF4 on steam but why bother when they haven't fix the netcode. I mean I wouldn't bother buying the game if I have someone to play against in person. But since I don't, online is my only option.

Longer sets are great up until the point everyone goes on autopilot. Then it's just useless and not very interesting. FT7 or FT10? Sure. FT50? Fuck that. I used to run FT100s back when I was grinding out games and by about game 100 your brain is just cooked.

When I used to run sessions here more frequently I would run either timed sets (so that two people would play for a half hour or an hour and then everyone would rotate) or a fixed number of games (usually 11) before rotating in a semi-set pattern. Winner stays is wack in a more casual environment unless you can't avoid it.

this is pretty much how i feel about long sets too. i love 'em before that point though - the constant back and forth and adaptation/learning process is one of the things that is truly great about playing fighting games.

in marvel this is especially great because of how much you can change up your approaches while also learning quirks of the player and matchup- there's never a time where i've played a long set and felt like i've come out with absolutely nothing

edit: ft100s/ftdeaths are dope too, i don't regret any of the ones i've done despite the cooked brain part being true

I love playing long sets. Being outmatched is ok too- some hyperbolic time chamber shit.
It can get pretty boring if you outclass the other player and they're not really making any headway against you. I've only had this happen against a couple of my friends though. They don't care about getting better really. Yet switching characters on those guys, to give them a chance or stave off boredom, really pisses them off lol

Sometimes I wonder if I'm that guy for other players!

Boring wouldn't be the right word in that situation, would it? More like, is it too frustrating? No, for either one. Well, depending on the game I guess (and if it's a Blanka or Fuerte player)!

In that situation I feel it becomes sort of like a puzzle I have to solve, which I think is pretty fun! "Why do I keep getting hit by that? What's wrong in my approach? Is there something I'm overlooking? What are my options when he puts me in this specific situation? Am I being baited?" etc and so on. After a certain point though my brain shuts off and I go into auto pilot which then becomes unfun.

And I do worry sometimes that I'm too boring for the other guy lol

Dante/Strider mirrors with Frantic were some of the most fun shit I've done with a GAF member in any game. Even moreso when I was new to Marvel just because I'm the type of guy that cracks up seeing what kind of blender I can get put into by others before coming up with my own. :lol

I am at 96/105 challenges. A few will come in time, like getting 1000 KOs and 50 hours of play.

Then I have to make the miserable decision:
All-Star Mode with everyone?
All-Star Mode with 15 characters?
100-Man Smash with everyone?
Get all custom parts?
Get all Smash Run powers?

I have already cleared Classic and Smash Run with everyone (NEVER AGAIN).
Damn. I'm only at 85/105. Did classic with everyone, but I'm really dreading doing Smash Run more than anything else. At least with shit like 100-Man Smash I can dick around and learn some of these characters more in-depth.

I have no words.

I should really get around to finishing gathering the single player content in Smash too, but I'm already falling behind everyone in terms of learning how the game plays/my characters.

At the very least, tonight I got confirmation that Zero Suit Samus is the HBIC.

In news I'm pretty sure no one here cares about, Examu announced their next project: Arcana Heart 3: Love Max: Six Stars!!!!!!. (What the heck at that title...) One new exclamation point and one new character, who... uh... a) looks like a rejected character from Kill La Kill and b) I'm not even sure I could post on here.

Is it boring for you if you are outclassed? Would you just stop the set?
It really depends on how good I am at the game. If I feel like I'm good enough to at least understand and try to work through what an elite player is doing, I'll keep playing as it'll be interesting trying to work through the layers of tactics involved, like an onion. If I'm not that good though, I'll just get wiped and not understand why and it's not really interesting.

rose players! :l

I don't think I have enough room for more fight sticks. I have two TEs (one 360, one PS3) and they're fucking huge. Takes up so much space.

How do you do it, Markman?

It has consumed me and my home.

markman is also a sneakerhead

so i just imagine his house is built out of shoe boxes and arcade stick boxes

I have around 400 arcade sticks, lol. I have NEVER gotten a picture of them all together though, that would be a task for sure. I have about 200 pairs of shoes now too >.>

I have boxes all around me. SEE!

^ these are just my more recent ones, mostly... I was too lazy to get all the boxes in one pic...

I'd post pics of my sticks but you guys probably seem em already lol.

Being outclassed is ok as long as it's not "complete and total anhilation" outclassed. I mean, sure losing against someone better is good for learning, but there has to be a sense that at least you're getting SOMETHING done. Completely demoralizing loss is the exact opposite of what someone needs to learn the game.

I like easy opponents sometimes. It lets me experiment with new stuff without worries. I will still win. If I have too many, my skills will degrade, though.

MarkMan do we need to hold an FGC-GAF intervention for you

I once played 146 matches straight with someone, and I vowed to never do it again. Good learning experience, but I literally had to stop playing because I was feeling physically ill, and there was a weird moment mid-match where I realized I had more or less stopped thinking. Needless to say, I've limited myself to 50-75 games total at most from that point on(because long sets rule, but too long of a set is just not a good thing).

Dante/Strider mirrors with Frantic were some of the most fun shit I've done with a GAF member in any game. Even moreso when I was new to Marvel just because I'm the type of guy that cracks up seeing what kind of blender I can get put into by others before coming up with my own. :lol
We had some fun sets, that's for sure. I find that getting put into the blender by someone, for me, is the best way I learn. Forces me to adapt, so long as I don't want to just lose all the time. lol

God damn, with school I barely have time to play the game at all, let alone go through these insane challenges.

Maybe I do this stuff when the Wii U version drops... that's close to winter break, too.

You just have to find the time. I am working 60 hours a week and am in school. Squeeze an hour in before bed, etc. I have to afford myself some small pleasure.

Your cipher is complete for the rest of your life. Damn. I should check up on Sneakerhead-GAF and see what's good with Jordan brand for the near future. Always miss out on the good things and find out 3 days after I come into some money. :lol

It's just a netplay taikai for LOVEMAX!!!!!, nothing exciting like porting the new update.

Knew it was too good to be true lol

but I mean one character and Arcana (and exclamation point) is patch/dlc tier

lol, as someone who is new to Smash and was having hard time getting into the game, ZSS saved the game for me. She feels like a traditional fighting game character, more so than anyone else I tried. Fast normals, projectile, dive kick, SRK, her general movement and recovery on most attacks is excellent but most importantly, fucking hit confirms. Only negative is that her hop is just a bit higher than I'd like it to be, the other character I played a lot with is Megaman and his hop feels perfect, like a KoF hop.

When they thought zero new characters arcanas (but five exclamations points) was worth a new retail release? Good luck with that. :p Frankly, the extra stages/music/modes in AH3:LM should have been sold as DLC to AH3 (and then run the retail release with everything included if you really wanted to).

Right now I've pretty much centralized on Marth, ZSS & Greninja. Marth is just my Smash character and I'll stand with him until the end of time. I've also begun to feel a bit more solid playing the ground game with him thanks to playing around with shield dancing. Zero Suit Samus is just the most ridiculous thing. She feels like Smash 64 Falcon (minus the hyper masculinity and PANCH) between her maneuverability and the way her blows connect. She's wonderful to play. Greninja is just the truth for how many different ways he can be played. That and Hydro Pump is the most based thing I've seen in a game in a while. Beyond these three, of the characters I've played:

- Pit just feels weirdly slow and combo-less. I'm also eternally sad that arrow looping is gone (I got WAY too good at that) and that his fair (while amazing in reach) is yet another multi hit move with no knock back and a good bit of cool down on landing. I want someone to show me how to play this character right though, it's not a Smash game unless I can rep with both of my boys (Marf and Pit)

- Shiek is incredible, but something still hasn't clicked and made her a character I want to main consistently.

- Palutena is wooooooonky. I feel like she needs devotion to shine but as is, it's weird playing her.

- Rosalina's the same way except with more easily noticeable and attainable benefits.

- Fox is too basic now. I miss Brawl shine stalls. Never mind comparing him to his Melee self.

There is that too. If I were a newbie picking up Marvel 3 recently, I can't imagine it'd be much fun or helpful in playing against a veteran ZMC player. Or a Skullgirls newbie running into a seasoned Painwheel/Bella player who locks the new guy down in the corner and starts hitting him with lighting fast resets that look like one long combo. I wouldn't understand what was happening in either situation.

Although, I think you'd at least eventually learn some valuable things about blocking and teching in a long set like that!
I like easy opponents sometimes. It lets me experiment with new stuff without worries. I will still win. If I have too many, my skills will degrade, though.
That's true, it does give me a chance to experiment with characters I wouldn't normally play. Get a chance to better understand how they work.

That's what I was kinda getting at, haha. :)

Everybody is talking in here about being on the winning side and getting bored and how to deal with it.

What if you guys are playing somebody way above you and they are destroying you. I think, what if they are getting bored, playing out of pity for you, just screwing around with you. What if all these matches were they quit after a few and some don't like it. What if you were boring them and they thought low of your tactics or you were scrubby and not worth their time.

I've been in these situations before. I remember I kept playing this guy in marve 3 back in the day and beat me like 25 in a row. Every time I hit rematch I thought he would just quit. I think he was just having fun clowning me, lol. Me personally, I don't mind losing so much, if they are willing to stick around and humor me. You learn a lot from those, especially if they are playing for real still and trying to destroy you and not fucking around.

Fighting Rosalina is annoying, but goddamn can she not take a punch. My Ike and Zard were giving an online player some lessons last night.

She is truly the glass cannon of this game. I'm always kind of mystified when I see her get some early KO upsmash/forward smash without Luma handy only to get revenge KO'd by some random ass special move/fsmash. :lol

Would love to play Grininja more but I'm afraid trying to control Hydro Pump with the 3DS analogue might give me a rage stroke. Maybe when I pick up a WiiU. :(

I like losing. It just means I have so much to learn and that I need to "git gud". If a person talks shit to me about me losing, I don't really have anyone to blame but myself for that so I don't even get mad :V

Oh god that's quite a design

Man I can do ft100s in Puyo Puyo of all things and usually not get bored.

That's because Puyo Puyo is hype as fuck
