Every negative PR and especially the dimension this whole affair had, made them ditch their plans. Every outlet, every board, every blog, every retailer had this DRM dilemma as their main topic last summer. Not to mention the tweets and posts per second. Microsoft witnessed the power of the consumers and back pedalled half a year before launch! It is only a secondary effect that many buyers sitting on the fence went with the other system. Again, not Sony made them ditch their plans nor were they responsible that Microsoft came up with the DRM idea. That's not how compeititon works.
