I going to go with Varick the main villain with Kuvira being manipulated by him and his crazy inventions...

I don't know... Good start to the season. :)

Guess we now know what was behind Varrick in the trailer now.

Did we all forget Book 2? He tried to kill people during that final Nutuk mover.

That was just a harmless kidnapping attempt.
No ill intent.

Toph throwing shade on her daughters metalbending?! :[] That's really got me interested. Still <3 Lin <3 though.

edit: i panicked and spoilered that idk what to think anymore what are the rules

I thought spoiler policy was spoilers until a certain time of day, then no spoilers.

Kuvira is still a boss

The problem is, she's kinda right.

Wu was clearly going to be a puppet. You had Mako asking the President of the United Republic if Wu was who he wanted on the throne. I'm sorry, did I miss where the Republic was supposed to be able to pick the leader of the Earth kingdom? Not only that, but they were going to send in "advisors" to do the actual ruling for him, since they know he's useless.

At least Kuvira cares about the strength and sovereignty of the Earth Kingdom/Empire, even if she's going about this the wrong way.

Bro! Varrick's the best.
You better watch out Zhu Li is coming for you.

Watch out, she's gonna do the thing!

I was under the general impression that we keep till spoiler tags until after a certain time due to the iffy release schedule it has now that it's online online only.

Fuck it, gonna post em.

Some funny scenes. Bataar is such a Mama's boy and he's gonna cry like a little bitch when he realizes Kuvira is evil.

I cam't wait to see that reaction.

Review roundup for the latest episode.

Book Four is settling in now that the initial shock of the three-year time jump has worn off, making “The Coronation” feel like a much more familiar show as a result. The exciting new status quo made the Book Four premiere stand out from what came before, and the dense character development of “Korra Alone” brought the show to new heights of emotional introspection, but there’s nothing particularly remarkable about tonight’s episode. Yes, it brings back a beloved old friend in Toph Beifong and considerably advances the Kuvira plot, but “The Coronation” still feels like a place-setting story that sets up a lot of future material, but isn’t particularly exhilarating on its own.

AV Club

Korra: Book Four's third episode posed a lot of questions to our main characters, most of which came about after Kuvira's assertive -- though somewhat unconvincing -- declaration of a new Earth Empire. Meanwhile, Korra's training with Toph brought about several great moments -- some humorous, some thought-provoking. As to what lies ahead for everyone is still uncertain, but we're slowly beginning to learn more and more as each respective nation plans their next move.

IGN

‘The Legend of Korra‘ Book 4 has me hooked with story, but it’s wowing me with the return of the original Metalbender, now 86 years old, and actress Philece Sampler’s faithful rendition of her layered persona. It’s Toph again, and not just on paper. The way she speaks, the way she jabs, the way concern slips out of her hard shell, the way she forcefully reels in that trace of compassion after noticing it snuck out — Toph is the most successful “classic” character to transition to the new show. She needed to be. Only someone as no-nonsense as Toph could whip the Avatar pack into hero mode, the human Zoloft to Korra’s spell of depression.

I'm liking the episode even more now after sleeping on it and time passes. Mostly because of the great dialogue and how they're setting up the season.

I actually like the fact that Kuvira's plot is headed where it's expected to go, and quickly. I just hope that they show more of why she's THE antagonist or worth going to war with. I want to SEE those prison camps, what she actually does to cities and states that refuse to sign the contract. Yi refused for a day or two, but what of those states that said NO with much more force.

It looks like we'll get a taste of her true authoritarianism when Suyin refuses to recognize her Earth Empire next episode or the one after that.

Overall, I believe the points of Kuvira being a dictator could have been made a bit better, although it's still early and the writers obviously still want the characters to spew-out the pro's and con's of Wu and Kuvira each for a bit more, with Korra coming in later and saying "BALANCE" and, the end.

Also, as far as the spoiler policy goes, it's kinda tough. Originally we did it like all other TV OTs handled it, spoiler free after it airs. But as you all know, Korra’s airdate shifted around a lot across all the seasons before finally being yanked off the air midway through season 3.

We played the rest of that season out under the rules that spoilers should be used until 8pm, which was Korra’s old airtime until it went online only. Reason being that folks might not have known it was off the air, so they'd come into a thread full of spoilers. Now that book 4 is relatively solvent, that's no longer true. The new problem is that the episode goes online five hours after primetime NA, far and away the timezone that most watches this show. And even then, it doesn't always go up at the same time - sometimes it's early, sometimes it's late. That means the vast majority of the thread will see the episode at variable times throughout the day.

I personally think once the episode goes up on Nick.com, spoilers can be unmarked. This makes all the onus of avoiding spoilers go on the individual: that person should know to not check the thread on Friday if they've not seen the episode.

I might post bigger impressions later, but for now, the main takeaway from that ep is how much I missed teaching sessions about bending. Toph training Korra was so great.

I like the idea of allowing spoiler as soon as someone posts a link to episode on Nick.

I would be okay with this. I watch it through Nick myself, but I don't come into the OT until I've seen the episode regardless of whenever I get around. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
wow,Kuvira could end up being the most evil Avatar villain after Unalaq. :O
GIANT MONSTER BATTLE ANYONE?

Sounds good.

This and when Bolin sees Eska are my favorite parts of this episode.
Don't forget Korra's face after getting hit by that lump of grass.

Just finished my re-watch. A couple thoughts:

- I feel torn on Toph (sort of, but not really). I think, on the one hand they are clearly nailing the portrayal of the Toph we knew in ATLA. It's great to see the old Toph we knew on screen again. They have the mannerisms and how she talks down perfectly. I love how she worked Korra and didn't give two shits about who she was. And while I think Korra has made some improvements, it was nice to see someone tell Korra how it is. I wish we could have had Toph in Book 2. HOWEVER, it feels kind of jarring to me that they showed us a different Toph when she was police chief. This is only a small gripe, because we only saw brief moments of her. So how do I know she wasn't like this back then. Plus she did call Aang Twinkle Toes in that flashback. But I dunno. Every single flashback we've seen of her, she seemed more serious and a bit more dignified.

It feels strange to me, to see Toph at this age...revert back to Toph as a child. It kind of feels like they are just re-creating the child version of Toph for fan-service sake. Every character from the old series, was shown to be quite different as they got older. They did show Aang still had his goofy side. But for the most part, he was mostly a different person. And it makes sense, because ATLA they were kids, and then they became adults (and people change). I'm not too iffy on Toph just because I did lover her in this episode. And I guess it could be argued that, apart of her walking the earth and getting back to nature and who she is, was getting back in touch with well..who she is. So it makes sense logically. I guess I just found it a tad bit strange kind of, to see toph from ATLA make an exact return on this show.

- I think this episode did a really really good job balancing various plot elements. It's probably one of the best episodes they've done to date, in terms of structure and spreading out covering plot, and doing so in a way that doesn't feel jumbled or rushed.

- Wu x Mako dat new ship. Nah but seriously, I actually hope they keep Wu around and give him a redemption arc. He's really funny, but I also think the guy has a lot more to him, and could see him having a really good story arc (as he eventually matures, and figures out how to help his people). Although I would kind of fear them using him, as a way to return to the status quo, and have a new king take over (after Kuvira falls), and everything is all right (this plays into my fear of them reducing Kuvira and her form of government to EVIL).

- I personally like how they are playing Bolin this season. I'm interested to see where they take it. I like that Bolin really believes they are helping the people (especially his family). So despite his reservations, he still feels it's better than what it once was.

...I guess that's really it. It was just a very solid episode. No real gripes. I really enjoyed it.

Theory: Toph lied about the metal bits. She figured Korra needs a physical representation of her mental block, just like she did with Aang, making him stand his ground and earthbend by himself. So Korra really doesn't have metal bits still in her body, but Toph needed to give Korra a goal, a physical goal to overcome her last obstacle.

I hope, like Veilk, that Korra realizes her through value is not in her physical attributes solely, and Toph's multiple references of Korra being "blinder than" her are hints that Toph wants to push Korra to open her mind even more and learn to live also with her trauma, and the Swamp will also help in that way (Again, the spirit vines used by Varrick also point to them being a major plot point in both Korra's and the main plot)

Then what was causing Korra her pain?

I think it will be both. That she has physical metal still in her and that Korra is also figuratively holding on to poison. At least that was my take. I guess the physical metal left in her might not be real and Toph was talking figuratively.

About dat spirit vine....kind of iffy on it. Really reeks of Kuvira going full on villaib with super powers. Do not want.

Then what was causing Korra her pain?

Katara said it: "The mind can be a powerfull ally. But it can also be your worst enemy."

Although it could be like Azula says, that both the pieces of metal and Korra's desire to not be the Avatar are linked, and Toph knows that the first will only be resolved after the latter is taken care of.

Oliver Sava at the A.V. Club said it best:

Korra connects her personal trauma with her role as the Avatar, and she’s convinced herself that she’s only going to get hurt if she tries to be the savior of the world again. Toph is there to humble Korra and show her that she’s a part of something bigger, and it’s no coincidence that Toph is connected to the entire world through the roots of the swamp. Korra needs to get out of her head and find that connection to the rest of the world, because then she won’t be fighting this battle on her own. (Korra also needs to get rid of the metal poison that remains in her body, but she can only do that once she finds mental calm.)

-Totally agree. Thinking about it now feels strange. She called Aang Twinkletoes in one of the flashbacks but it wasn't nearly as Toph-ish as this portrayal of her. Maybe in her seniority she said "fuck it" and went back to not giving a shit? Who knows.

-I felt that the Wu segments dragged on, but someone posted somewhere (here I think) that Wu is obviously going to get his shit together and become King when Kuvira goes down. That many scenes (more than Eska/Desna throughout the whole series) of Wu obviously are going somewhere.

-Same here. Let's hope Wu becomes a different sort of King that also redefines the meaning of the title (holy shit we're setting him up here).

-Classic Bolin!
