All she does is remind me of the shittiness of S1 and the whole "Equalist" thing. Why turn an adventure series into an attempt to replicate an introductory PoliSci class?Kuvira is an awesome villain...so far. We just fear she'll be reduced to a terrible villain. I think, people just want more from the show. We know the potential, and what it could do. I would say, even if Kuvira doesn't end up living up to the expectations that some of us, she could still be great.

I still say that Kuvira lacks a certain "oomph" factor in terms of presence. I think it's the lack of real opposition. Any half conscious idiot can push around Wu or play Bolin for a chump, while real opponents like Suyin are holding back. Her real make or break moment will be when korra rises to the challenge. Right now, she's a big fish in a small pond.
I just like her personality, and bending style. But I can agree that she doesn't come off entirely menacing yet. I dunno. You mean purely from a design point of view? (I guess that would be presence). I don't know that she'll ever get that for you if you think she lacks it now.
At this point, she's been restraining herself as she builds up her empire. At some point she's going to let loose and go crazy. But I'm not sure that will add to her presence. I think she will be ruthless when she attacks the Metal City and conquers it. But again, not sure if that will give her any kind of presence. I guess in part it depends on what her motivations are. Because I thin how she carries herself, is kind of tied to what she actually wants from her actions.
I don't get a good feeling though with scenes like "I always Get what I want"...
I like politics, but it has to be nuanced for me to find it interesting. Amon being a villain seeking power by manipulating the weak-minded was just an aggravating waste of an interesting idea.Ah, so you don't like the political themes in general? That's fair enough. I personally liked the potential of the equalist movement, and hated how they side swept it by having Amon be a fraud (only doing the movement because he had daddy issues). I also generally don't like villains that are just evil to be evil (unless, they are a lot of fun to watch. Like they are totally menacing and bad ass. In cases like that, I'm okay with them not having motivation).
That said, if you don't like the political plot, then yeah. I guess you would probably rather have Kuvira just be a psychopath that just wants power. If she has any conviction for what she's doing politically (or is morally grey), it will just play into a political plot/theme you wouldn't like. I don't think you are wrong for feeling that way though. It's just interesting to see what different fans like and dislike (or what they want vs don't want).
Yeah, I assume it's all leading up to a confrontation ala Amon/Korra. I just don't have that many hopes for it based on that season.I still say that Kuvira lacks a certain "oomph" factor in terms of presence. I think it's the lack of real opposition. Kuvira being a cartoon version of Pol Pot or some other military dictator is giving me the same feeling. The fact that she isn't even all that charismatic as a leader doesn't help as well, because at least you could believe why people would follow her other than because the plot demands it.

S3 was good. I'm not sure why they felt the need to run away from that when they finally made up for the terrible S2.
Now you say it, I would actually like to see some scenes that show that she is actually a very good boss. Something that makes it more believable that people follow her that intensely. Even if she bullies local authority and may or may not have the wish to grasp power for herself, she can still be a decent boss.
Like Balalaika of Black Lagoon or the Boss of Saint's Row. Both are not good people who show no mercy for those who cross their paths, but don't shy away when it comes to protecting and avenging their followers.
Well, it's not a new idea in fandom - every single X-men story ever written involves "normals" trying to persecute Mutants in some way. lolWell interesting perspective! Sorry for writing you off (that wasn't my intention). I have a lot of the same fears and criticisms as you actually. I guess the reason I liked the equalist movement (in principle), is that I think in a world where bending exists, it would make sense for non-benders to become a lower class. This is something I've always thought about going back to ATLA. And with Republic City existing (where all benders come together and live as one, it makes sense they would start becoming their own class too). Prior, benders lived in their specific nation. So there wasn't as much of a divide class wise (with regards to bending).
So that is why I loved the potential of the plot. And thought organically, that kind of movement made sense. I just hated how they handled it.

And as an idea, I think it's fine. But 1) it's never really brought up again in the context of the universe and 2) it would have been far more interesting if the villain actually believed in the movement and wasn't just some mustache twirling evil guy.
(Of course the other major problem with S1 was how it ended with Korra getting all her powers back, but that's a whole other story).
I think I'm the only person who would explicitly compare Korra to Full Metal Alchemist (beyond the superficial fighting styles), but at least the political situation and the set up of the villains made sense in FMA and allowed for certain themes to develop.
I don't know if they don't think kids can handle political depth, or if it's the handcuffs of being forced to have 13 episode story arcs, or just something else entirely that made S1 feel so lackluster and has made the first three episodes of S4 feel the same way.
And I like you both. 5aints Row is coming. Believe in the boss.Saints Row...you said Saints Row? I like you.
I kind of hate that meme, and not in a funny-hate way, even though it is kind of funny, but weird....
Glad I didn't bet wrong.
I agree it's not unique. It's been done before. I just think it made sense organically in the world (like the evolution of the Avatar world, especially with Republic City being the first state where anyone from any nation could live in).
That said, I agree 100% with your criticisms of the plot. I basically liked the idea of the plot and the potential. But didn't care for how it was handled at all. Also, based on interviews from the creators, it seems that they never really intended to take the plot seriously. I think what kind of worked, is that Amon (at least IMO) was menacing, and pretty fun to watch. So at least on a shallow level, I think he was entertaining (unlike Unalaq). But I do agree how his plot comes together, and how the equalist plot kind of just falls apart, it's certainly a mess and not handled at all with any type of subtlety or complexity that a political plot like that would need.
I think a lot us want that with Book 4's plot with Kuvira. But it's not likely to happen. I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT, and all the obvious evil cues they are throwing around (the close ups, the camera pans, her evil grins). Yeah....
So for me, my best hope is that Kuvira is at least entertaining and menacing. I personally like her personality/design (I can agree with Veelk's criticisms of her though). But I still like her. I'm not 100% on whether she will pan out as a main villain though. I have my worries.
And I like you both. 5aints Row is coming. Believe in the boss.
I think for me the only way that Kuvira pays off is if she's pretending to be evil and consolidating power for some greater threat that's coming. Basically the Watchmen gambit. She would need to have some other majorly impressive motivation for me to be satisfied otherwise.
And yeah, as someone else mentioned, it doesn't help that the characters that you know are idiots are the ones who are blindly following her. lol
Only thing is, I can't imagine the Red Lotus are THAT massive, to be able to take on an army.,,
