Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

It was today.

Nowinstock.net has an alert system that can email or text you as soon as it's flagged as in stock somewhere. I recommend that.

Thanks for the heads up.

Also, after people really having a go at them, are the EVGA cards with the ACX coolers as bad as they say?

Diablo 3 is a stuttery mess in Full screen for me with SLI enabled or disabled, vsync doesn't really help. It smooths out in Borderless Windowed mode but there is still this intermittent single frame stutter every few seconds.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wouldn't say it's bad, it's just that the heatpipes on the 970 was misaligned, contributing to poor heat dissipation:

Just got my gigabyte 970 and doing some stress tests. My card seems to be hotter than some reported here. I'm reaching 70 degrees running the furmark Bench... Is that a problem?

No, that's perfectly acceptable. Plus furmark is a bit of a stupid test, pushes card beyond the limit it would be under normal usage

Fur mark is dumb. Your GPU will never get anywhere close to those temps in any video game.

Overclock that card. When I had the card, is get 65 degrees clocked to 1540
MHz boost.

For anyone that has a 970 and Star Citizen what are you getting for you FPS at 1080p? There was a post on reddit and people were saying that they were getting 80+ fps on max setting in vandul swarm. I get a max of 64. I just want to know if i'm losing power somewhere in my build. Thanks

For the GTX 970, I wouldn't touch anything other than the FTW Model: 04G-P4-2978-KR. The lesser cards aren't bad, it's just the competition is offering a better all around product. EVGA has amazing customer support though, and that goes a long way for me. I'm trying to snag a 970 FTW before 11.9.14 for the free backplate offer..

"So what did Gigabyte sacrifice to make this happen? The truth is, not a whole lot. Presumably, the VRM circuitry isn't as elaborate, and the cooler certainly isn't either, but the card is still overclocked, running at 1076 MHz Base with a Boost clock of 1216 MHz. Reference GTX 970's run at 1051 MHz and Boost at 1178 MHz. It's not much of an overclock, but it's enough to show that Gigabyte has faith in its design. It is powered by a single 8-pin PCI-Express power connector."

That thing is hella sexy.

Would be awesome in a ITX rig, I'm really tempted to build one now.

Are there any decent guides out there for tweaking the 3D settings in the driver settings or at least explaining them in a more friendly way? Thanks.

The thing is, the FTW version is also $20 more expensive than the rest, and from what I can tell, it's only on EVGA's website? Are there any other sites that carry it?

Am I correct in my understanding that a stress test, like Furmark for example, is not a good way to indicate if the factory overclock on a card is stable. I've just been trying to determine if I should RMA one of my MSI cards. Furmark I have no problem running, but I've been getting a flickering screen and artifacts while playing Shadow of Mordor. My plan for tonight was to test my rig with just the single card that I believe is ok (it is also the card with the much higher ASIC quality rating in GPU-Z, perhaps coincidentally) and see if the game still has problems.

Also, does anyone else running these in SLI show the second card running at a lower voltage? At rest, for example, my GPU1 was running at 1.025 and GPU2 was at 0.98.

Edit:
I don't touch Furmark anymore for 2 reasons that are directly related. It's notorious for pushing cards past their breaking point. The other reason is caused by Nvidia and AMD's reaction to the damage it can do. They apparently recognize the executable and automatically throttle their cards to prevent failure so it's also an unreliable test for overclocks.

Interesting.

Not sure if you guys have seen it, but OcUK are having a "reference" 970 built for them -

Using these to prevent coil whine -

A lot more pricey than other 970's (£319.99) .... but damn I like the look of that cooler.

Any UK retailers that have the 970's is stock? Preferably Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA cooling solutions.

Every place seems to have a 3-4 week waiting period... That just wont do with Advanced Warfare coming out in a few days. Need that 144hz goodness.

I think I'm going to RMA my ASUS 970 STRIX for coil whine. It's not that bad but the fact that I know it's there plagues me. Plus I tried turning off VSYNC in Witcher 2 and the menus were sitting around 2500 fps and the card was squealing like crazy. Now THAT was noticeable.

I'll go to Newegg for the RMA initially since they give the 30 days. I have about 10 days to get it to them. Going to have to get it in the mail tomorrow if I can. I'll aim for a replacement first and if a new ASUS comes along and does the same thing then I'll have to see if they'll replace it with a MSI instead.

Asus GTX 970 Strix 4G or the MSI GTX 970 4G? Go.

MSI - more power, higher base OC, same quiet fans, better overclocker (thanks to more power)

Only thing ASUS has going for it (imo) is it has the backplate and looks better (red does not look good in my case). It used to have price, but MSI lowered their MSRP for the Gaming 4G to match the ASUS.

I'm putting that in my FT-02!!!

Ironically enough I would love to see that only to learn how it works in a vertical position. If the heatpipes can't fight gravity I'd love to see how it works with only two of them operating.

It'd otherwise be the perfect GPU in my FT03-mini.

Okay, that's what I thought.

I know I want SLI of these fuckers for right now, but I may just buy one, which is already much better than my GTX 680, and then get one later when the price drops. Or just save up for the next chipset and use the GTX 970 as an in-between.

Ugh. I just found out newegg doesn't pay for return shipping for replacements. Its going to be at least 10-15 bucks to get it back to them in time. Maybe I just live with it or RMA to Asus.

Edit: well Asus doesn't pay for return shipping either. Sigh. So I'm on the hook for some money to return the card regardless. I should have held off and waited for a revision. I guess I'm going to just suck it up and live with it. There's no guarantee I'd get one that DIDNT have the problem.

GTX 970 back in stock at Newegg. I picked up the Asus GTX 970 for $338.41 after code before it went oos again.

I received the stock alert from NowInStockNow two hours earlier than the Newegg auto notify.

Have you called Newegg directly and asked for a shipping label? That always does the trick for me.

At this stage getting a GTX 970 without coil whine might as well be the same as being a winner in silicon lottery. :-P

I'm considering returning my second 970 and just jumping on one of the sick deals on the 780 Ti or perhaps a 980.

I reckon you will have better luck getting 780 Ti. If you're aiming to get a Windforce, Strix or 4G, they're still sold out everywhere. I missed out on Newegg latest 980 restock as well, the notification email never came through. :-\

Guys, don't use newegg's stock tracker. In my experience, it is way slow or never emails me. Use http://www.nowinstock.net and set up a text alert. Using that I got one in a day. They seem to be going in and out of stock almost daily on newegg when I had notifications for them on my phone.

What's the main difference between those two Gigabyte cards, besides the different clock speeds? Worth holding off for the 369 one or just go with the 349 one?

Any rumors on a 6 or 8gb cards. For 4k gaming 4gb is not enough.

i asked the same question in the previous page and got the same answer by 2 users, not coming soon they say, demand for these cards to high they say, you'll be waiting a while they say, so i made up my mind and went out to get a 980 and is sold out everywhere
