It started with Crystal Skull
The quality of the Transformers movies didn't help.
At some point, as happens with every famous young person, a saturation point was hit and people found it was more entertaining to mock the guy.
He then made it a lot easier to mock him with years of highly public acts of douchebaggery.
He then transcended mere douchebaggery and became a bearded trainwreck of a person from all accounts.
None of this shit was mitigated by quality acting performances in the same period of time.

Now we're at a point where he's been brought low, and he's acted so weird, that it's come back around. He appears to have turned in a solid supporting performance in a meat 'n' potatoes war movie, he went on tv and told a great story about what a fucking idiot he was at a Broadway show, and now there's a video of him appearing to mock himself.

He gets one role where he plays a likeable but misguided asshole who finds the light in the last 20 minutes and does the right thing at the cost of his life/dignity/respect, and he'll be back in the saddle again.

This is how celebrity tends to work.
