Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Also compare the Ryse GPU usage above, with this which is Crysis 3's GPU usage:

Why are the 980s sold out everywhere? I wanted to be proactive and have it by the time my rift arrives on Monday but this will not be the case. The EVGA model I want is sold out online everywhere and none of my local stores even carry the 980s yet. :(

Also, I would like to know what everyone thinks of the other competitors out there. All of my cards have been EVGA but what do you guys think about Gigabyte, Zotac, and MSI brand cards?

What's the best GTX 970 that comes in at less than 11 inches long? I know the Gigabyte model is really popular here but it comes in a whopping 12.5 inches so it won't fit in my case. I was looking into the MSI or EVGA options but I know some of those are known to have coil whine. Can anyone give me a recommendation? Budget is ~$350.

They've all exhibited coil whine. It's a crap shoot.

Any card from any manufacturer can have coil whine and most of them do, but for the most part it's only noticeable when you get like 2000 fps in a menu or something and you will pretty much never experience it.

Then you can get unlucky and get a card that makes noise even at normal framerates.

So you can really pick whatever and just hope you don't get a bad one.

Hard to do with some good PC games coming out soon, but I think I've made the decision.

I currently have a 580 and was debating on 980, but I'm now leaning on waiting for either 980ti if that'll happen since all the cores are already unlocked on the 980, or the 990.

I saw a comment somewhere that the 970/980 are the last gfx cards to fit current motherboards. Not sure what that means or if it was just total bull. Anyway I have a 7970 so I don't have a huge need to upgrade, but if this is the last set of cards to fit my haswell mobo then I might as well get a 980.

Sounds like BS to me.

edit: maybe nvidia posted it. :P

What's the best way to test for coil whine? Is unigine heaven all I need? I get some audible buzzing at 200+ fps, is that normal?

Will overclocking increase coil whine?

Nonsense.

Just play a variety of games. If you hear a noise that is bothering you, open up the case and listen closer.

If you don't hear anything, don't go looking for it. lol

The MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming was in stock for 14 minutes before it sold out again... fucking christ...
Ugh. I've been waiting on this for weeks now, and I'm just never around when there's new stock. I'm not used to buying new GPUs around release, so I wasn't expected inventory to be drained so quickly for this long.

Well, there's just 2 days left in the return period and I don't have much installed but... I didn't hear anything in Korra
lol

Anyone using a 2560x1440 monitor and having issues with DSR? I feel like Nvidia only really tested it for people who have 1080P.

Whenever I try to use DSR, it severely limits my refresh rate. At 4K, it goes to 60hz, and at 5K down to 25hz. It's fucking useless because I clearly have the GPU power to do it in a lot of games, but can't due to that issue. Not only that, but the games get super choppy as well, leading me to believe there might be a conflict with GSYNC.

For example, If I'm using GSYNC at my native res, then 45fps feels perfectly smooth, but somehow DSR 45fps feels like a slideshow.

Is this for all games? I can downsample older/less demanding games from 5K and run them at 144hz just fine. Modern titles usually takes such a hit that I don't bother with it, but the frame rates I get seem to be in line with what I would expect.

edit: I have 980gtx and rog swift

Man I really wish I had money to get a new computer.

Even though that aren't really that many worth it titles to warrant a beast computer these days.

I just want to play next car game without chugging and I want to finally be able to play ARMA 3 without my computer crapping itself.

I am not sure if it's all games. I know it happened in FEAR and Dark Souls 2. I will try the new drivers Andy posted.

EDIT: YES! They addressed the Oculus Rift and GSYNC incompatibility in the new drivers! Thank You Andy!

With my i5 at 4.1 and my 970 and 1470 mhz boost I can run wreckfest at 60 most of the time maxed out....and it's very unoptimized.

Welp. 970 packed up and ready to go back tomorrow. Seeing as the Asus is out if stock currently, I wonder if they'll offer me a refund instead then I can camp an MSI going back in stock.

Just for fun, I put my old Asus 660ti back in and loaded up witcher 2 with no vsync. Where the 970 is squealing like crazy at 3k-4k fps in the menus, the 660ti is dead silent even at 2k fps. Coil whine is not a forgone conclusion and does not exist on all cards.

Even as mild as it is on the Strix 970, it just shouldn't be there. If my replacement card has it, I'm going to just straight refund and wait for a revision or something. I love love love the performance of the 970 but I don't want to be babying it trying to get around the coil whine for the next 2-3 years.

"So what did Gigabyte sacrifice to make this happen? The truth is, not a whole lot. Presumably, the VRM circuitry isn't as elaborate, and the cooler certainly isn't either, but the card is still overclocked, running at 1076 MHz Base with a Boost clock of 1216 MHz. Reference GTX 970's run at 1051 MHz and Boost at 1178 MHz. It's not much of an overclock, but it's enough to show that Gigabyte has faith in its design. It is powered by a single 8-pin PCI-Express power connector."

That thing looks all cute snugged with the motherboard. lol.

Also, I'm considering getting the Zotac Extreme version of the 970 on my m-itx build. I have a big enough case so i figured why the hell not?

Anyone know the reason why you can't have SLI enabled and monitors working on both cards?

I have 3 monitors, rarely ever game in NVSurround anymore, have my middle (Primary) monitor on the top card, the 2 side monitors on the 2nd card.

This works great except for the fact you can't enable SLI.

I'm sure there is a highly technical reason why it won't work but anyone know?

Does anyone know why you can't set up DSR for individual profiles? I want unique settings for each game, yet you seem only able to set the options globally in the driver settings.

You set what resolution you want in each game's options. The DSR in the control panel only dictates what resolutions will be available for games to choose from.

Looking to order one tonight, I need help. Never brought a GPU before, ran out of money while building my pc and been using the hd4000 for everyday use and civ5/minecraft.

Brought a bunch of games to push my self to get a GPU, like the witcher 1+2, metro 2033, tomb raider etc over the course of the last few steam sales/humble bundle etc. Will be getting the witcher 3, shadow of morder, dragon age etc.

I wonder which one (970) to get, G4 gaming, evga etc. I want to play only at 1080p for now with some recording with fraps, twitch streaming etc. How much to overclock, should I also overclock my stock i5 3570k. Up my ram from 8 to 16 ( I stupidly brought 3 sticks, and it only can take two and two.

Thanks, x-drake.

Ohhh. It looks like it's GSync + DSR + SLI that isn't compatible yet. Just saw a post by AndyBNV stating that this config is in the works.

Yep. That's the one. If I turn off gsync... I can do it. If I turn off SLI I can do it. If I have both on, I can't. Shame these drivers don't support it yet, but I'm happy to hear it's in the pipeline.

MSI GTX 970 get!

Gave BF4 a quick try and what a beautiful feeling it is to be able to max out the video settings without a care in the world.

This one should hopefully last me for 3 or 4 years.

Oho! Thanks for the link.

I shall follow that thread closely as well.

Thank you for sharing.

Here are the instructions on how to raise the power limit on all iterations of both the GTX 970 and 980. This will very likely void your warranty if something terrible happens, but there have already been quite a few successful attempts on record.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1517316/...build-and-new-nvflash-5-190/110#post_23040140

*Again, do this at your own risk*

EDIT: You need to make sure the nvflash.exe with supporting files is in the root directory of where you extract it to. I'm going to try this later from a flash drive.
EDIT2: If you're not power limited, this may not be for you anyway. Most Gigabyte G1 cards don't have this issue. Check in GPU-Z first to see what is holding back your overclocks. For Zotac owners, we are power limited and there is a fluctuating voltage issue. I hope by raising the power limit to 150% or greater, it will stabilize the voltage and allow for a more stable boost clock.

Didn't have the money right now for a full rig so I just got a 970 in the meantime.
The jump from the previous HD6670 is mindblowing.
Now I'm hugely CPU bound though, was to expected lol a 970 on an Athlon II X2 is quite silly XD

I guess I'll run older games in 4k until I save enough for the jump to Devil's Canyon
