iOS Gaming October 2014: We didn't even know this was releasing on iOS

Not open for further replies.
Slightly off topic, but have the issues with the latest version of iOS been resolved? I am on a 5s and had heard there were major slowdown issues and battery problems

From what I have seen there are still battery issues and WIFI lagginess on 8.1 so I'm holding off (I'm still on 7.1.2). I use my phone on WIFI at home a lot including controlling my smarthome system, so I need to wait until both those things are resolved.

If he doesn't, I can sort of understand his enthusiasm. Roguelike match 3? Count me the in!

BTW It's out in NZ, didn't realise it was F2P! Hopefully not too gimped.
Not a roguelike and it's the good kind of F2P
Game's a match 3 platformer, which sounds like a weird combo but works really well.

Guys...

Totally worth it?

Splot is a racer, you against an evil blob. The control system is deep and the kind you need to master. Tap right or left to go in that direction. Slide down on each side to go down faster. The catch is that you cant keep the screen tapped and advance, you have to tap after each jump and have to figure out the distance to get the little birds. And the evil blob is behind you getting close all the time, giving a rush. I am on the first world and is already tricky. If you collect all the ducks, you get a 3 bronze (I guess after you complete all levels on bronze you unlock silver then gold) star rating (not easy to get, already replayed a lot of levels to get them), and this game is not even done with its replayability. Each level has a costume hidden, and you have to collect 4 pieces to get this. Is a lot of fun to do it but they missed the opportunity to make it a GameCenter leaderboards competitive affair like other speed-runners on the AppStore do. Like Lion Pig does. That would make the soft grind even more fun (I got a special costume that is awesome). As you level up you unlock power-ups that make it fun and give you an advantage. The animations are superb and the blob is incredibly well animated, as is the game itself, gorgeous. Around 50 levels. There are a lot of achievements. An intro. Its very polished. Nice chiptune too. I wasn't expecting a racer, a genre I am not really fond of, but I need to keep playing it further and further. Its has a strange appeal to me. Its well excecuted and fun. And there is a lot of game ahead, with NO IAP, and lots of things to unlock.

Somebody said earlier on in this thread (or in last month's thread, I don't know) that they were disappointed in Hitman Go not having iCloud support meaning that they needed to keep the game installed on their device

Yeah, Hitman Go just got updated to add iCloud support...just gonna bring that up

Sweet, haha.

Dash, you summoned it!

It's going to be hard to reach the capacity limit on this 128gb phone.

Don't care much for the angry birds transformers game, but the intro and especially the music is just short of incredible.

Likewise for Asphalt overdrive, boring gameplay.. but the graphics, presentation and music are top notch. The first seconds of a race look like you are going to play Outrun 2 on your phone..shame it doesn't actually play like that.

I hope Hitman Go gets updated for 6+.

So does Final Fantasy Tactics (or any of the FF titles) ever go on sale? Just grabbed an iPad Mini 2, and I have always wanted to try FFT.

Thanks for the review! Might push me over the edge to get it.

On a separate note, anyone who is interested in MFi controllers, I found a Moga Ace Power Controller on clearance at Best Buy for $19.99. Not sure if that's a nationwide deal.

I honestly never played with controller support for iOS but figured for that price I'd give it a shot. Charging it but quickly tried it with Asphalt 8 and it works pretty damn well.

Never would have payed $80 for it, but it seems like cool enough to play around with.

Tried Adventure Xpress (adult swim match 3 rpg) enjoyed it (apart from the full screen ads after every fight) until I got to the boss of the second world who is nigh impossible unless you pony up some cash, shame really that they went down this road.

It is possible. I'm actually in the fourth world now or something (without spending a penny), but the knock I have against the game is that it absolutely has no variety whatsoever. Always the same enemies, always the same power-ups, always the same of everything. It's fun at the beginning, but a few hours down the road it turns into a drag. I stopped playing a week ago, will probably delete it.

I died twice, it then wanted me to pay for some revival potion or come back tomorrow, I wasn't coming back. I could invision beating him if I went back and grinded a few levels, but the game is clearly designed to make you pay to unlock equipment early. Think I'll just buy puzzle quest (again)

Kinda the same. I've managed to get a bit further (I think I'm around 6 or 7 worlds in?) but I've definitely hit a kind of a brick wall where the final boss/enemy winds up with at least 3-4,000 HP left by the time I'm dead.

The game itself wouldn't be so bad if it didn't weight the upcoming blocks against the enemy/weapons/armour/potions you have. ie. if you have a shield that has sun healing, you won't get many sun tiles. If you're against a water character, you won't get many green tiles (that are more powerful against them). If you have a weapon that powers up red tiles, you will get less red ones. If it was even across the board for each one, the game would be far better... but then, I guess they wouldn't be able to monetise it.

I'm impressed with how long it's held my attention, though. Just a sucker for match 3 games, I guess.

Edit: There's a new Puzzle Quest?

Sweeet!

.... I think I already deleted it though.

FYI guys, SAS4 is a good time

Are you in Canada by any chance? I have an FFT ipad code, but it only works on the Canadian App Store. I'll give it to you for free

There isn't any such logic in the game.

lol this pikpok basketball game is pretty much just that wwe f2p card game, but with some minigames.

and pretty hefty timers.

yay! Awesome news, maybe the new pack is near? Fingers crossed

That code has reached mythical status :)

btw, a couple of days ago Tunesmith told me something pretty interesting about iOS8.... something about some kind of leaderboards coming back? ;)

Hopefully it performs as well as the WWE Supercard game. Wouldn't mind having the dedicated NeoGAF OT that has either.

Btw, dunno who follows my twitter or if you had the game on appshopper, but
Shadowrun is only $3 (launched at $10) till the end of the week.
€2.69 here, which is croissant+cappuccino... bought!

mmmmmhhhh... cappuccino.... :-(),,

Good for you I guess.

It will be free to play, with an option to buy an IAP that removes the energy system entirely making it premium-ish (I can assure most of the other IAP are basically cheats). Wish Adventure Xpress did this. Its a win-win situation for both customers and developers. You guys are in for a gaming treat with Puzzle to the Center of the Earth (and Gauntlet Revenge also).

I don't see the IAP to remove energy system.. do you mean the infinite lives IAP?

Anyone played Phantasy Star 2? How is it?
It's definitely a straight port from the genesis. IMO their Shining Force port worked better(WHY YOU NO GIVE ME SHINING FORCE II SEGA?!) but if you love old school RPGs and don't mind the oldschoolness, get this game. Now.

Do Square titles ever go on sale? Ive been wanting to get FF6 for a while now.
Last Year's Xmas Sale info:
http://toucharcade.com/2013/12/20/s...-including-final-fantasy-games-and-much-more/

Expecting another Xmas sale this year.

Isn't Chaos Rings 3 releasing this week?

Is it Japan only for now?
Chaos Rings III came out 10/16 over here in Japanland. Not sure about everywhere else.

Yeah, I was hoping for a Flick Kick Football style basketball game with some evolved mechanics. But timers and two currencies...yuck. Such a shame.

Pretty much my thoughts this morning. Not sure on the game yet, but the presentation is bang on. I also like the 'birds disguised as robots in disguise' tagline.

There are actually 3 currencies.

But in terms of what the game is derived from, it was designed to be an evolution of Flick Kick Football Legends (which has collectable cards, energy, and 2 currencies) more than the original all arcade Flick Kick Football.

Is AppShopper going to optimize their app for iPhone 6 / 6 Plus? It looks like crap on my 6 Plus.

They still haven't released a native iPad version, correct?

Is there a better alternative?

I don't think they'll ever update it again.
IIRC, Apple banned these kind of apps. That's why they released Appshopper Social, as they thought they would be able to sort Apple's ban this way. I think that they were able to publish it, but they risk getting banned again with an update.
I'm speaking of memory, the real issues might be different, but Apple is definitely getting in the way somehow.
It's a real shame.

Huh, so it just feels like it then. Thanks for clearing it up :)

I think its just one of those things that when you are hanging out for a certain colour, you don't get what you want and possibly feel like the game has something against you.

We didn't really have the time or the budget to get to the point where the game messed with the randomisation because it actually has something against you :)

Not really our style to do something like that anyway. The only times when we have messed with such things in the past it has actually been to weight in favour of the gamer so you don't feel hard done by e.g. in Shatter extra lives drop seemingly right when you need them (because the game actually notices that you need them at that point). Now we are getting some data in, we are doing something similar too with card pack draws in Rival Stars Basketball to nudge away from "pure" randomness and towards getting the cards you want and need.

Ah, I've never played Legends. I would imagine it made a buttload more money than regular ol' Flick Kick Football.... :(

Looking at Pete´s blog, I see there is a new cool looking weird match-3 with some Super Hexagon game there, QbQbQb (video), but yet again it fails to include GameCenter, and high-scoring games need GC at all times. I will be adding it to the list (Escape from Montegrande and SEJ: Groove City are also in that list) to see if they add it. Hope so.

I wanted to keep playing but I NEEDED to sleep, so no further things to say. But I can say that although it wasn't what I expected to be, I quite liked it. Different kind of platformer than Im used to and well executed, polished and without IAP.

Errr, sorry you are right, I usually call "energy system" timers. Adventure pack removes the lives system, the timers, altogether. And its doesnt have double currency just coins. The 20 moves you get on each level are needed, without them the game becomes a walk in the park, a horizontal one with no hills and horizontal escalators (dont know the name of those). There is plenty of energy bricks ) all over and if you match more than 7 (upgradable, (one of the four formulas in the game) you get a special shard that helps. Its balanced.

Flick Kick Football (and the free ad supported version) have actually been pretty huge for us, and continue to be good earners in our portfolio.

Funnily enough as I look in our reporting now they've coincidentally made about the same as Flick Kick Football Legends (like within $100k of each other), though they did have a 3.5 year head start and Legends is pulling out ahead in front.

Ok, you guy's ready? You know what I'm going to say, right? All together now...

I didn't know QbQbQb was coming to IOS! Really enjoyed the game on PC. It's stylish and colorful but can get really tricky and challenging

The dev is also working on Jameson The Pilot. The FTL, Out There, space sim fans here will want to keep an eye on that
