So why doesn't Sony advertise their resolution advantage?

I know Andrew House mentioned it briefly at Gamescom or E3, but seriously, whats stopping them? Why not just slap a sticker on the box where they advertised Destiny's exclusive content?

"Looks best on PlayStation"*

or

"In Full 1080p HD, only on PlayStation"*

*the only home console with this feature

It may be petty or cheap, but so what? So was Microsoft buying away a 3rd party game from Sony or Sony advertising Destiny as basically exclusive. They're throwing blow for blow, why not go further? I think your average Joe knows what 1080p is.

Because nobody outside forums where you debate the point/know the answer gives a shit?
I'd imagine that this is definitely the reason. Majority of consumers care more about the actual graphics themselves than the resolution.

Please don't give them any ideas, christ. Padding out their conference with an hour of stupid exclusive DLC announcements every year is quite enough.

I would think casuals don't care about resolution that much to sway them. If they already have a PS4 what's the point?

Before I came to this forum, I didn't even know game resolution was a thing. I just assumed the game was the same resolution as my t.v. (As in, not stretched).

The average Joe likely won't really know or care and they might also have a gentleman's agreement with Microsoft about this.

Because all X1 games output at 1080p.

Advertising your internal rendering resolution is sketchy at best. What if your UI is 1080p, your viewport is 900p and your particle effects are 540p.

Nobody cares

Who cares, its marketing. They can frame it anyway they want. Just call it Native 1080p on a premium shiny sticker. Your average Walmart customer will notice that.

Which totally explains why the market evolved from 720p TVs to 1080p ones, and now is moving towards 4K.

Wait, the opposite!

The real answer, I think, is that it has already gained enough traction by itself. They don't have to say anything. Customers and media does it for them.

That's certainly not true in the slightest.
Depends in your social circle I guess?

My friends played Titanfall at my house, everyone really liked it and no one complained about the graphics. In real life I rarely hear people talking about graphics instead it almost always goes about the gameplay. Folks don't care about the platform it only matters to them if they can play with their friends. That's my experience at least.

The people who'd care already know?
Plus it would restrict them from ever having titles not 1080p ? Could be some cool stuff to do in Morpheus, who says that's 1080p? They'd also have to worry about the camera stuff too make sure that's all 1080p. (Probably is, but false advertising and all of that)

I bet they could make them give a shit though if they started educating people on it. Though it would take more then Sony, the "journalists" at our prestigious media outlets should be doing it to, instead of saying garbage like "nobody can see the difference without squinting."

Still, I wouldn't say its completely ignored by non-enthusiasts. It may be an uncommon factor, but its still a factor. Like undecided voters, it could still make a difference if Sony reached out to them a bit. *shrug*

you dont advertise something that is flexible. Not all ps4 games are 1080p and that flexibility will continue into the future.

Exactly. That shit resonates with the average consumer. If the PlayStation box has it and the Xbox box doesn't, I don't see how you don't make a mental note.

That's just talking about resolution support though. Nothing to stop Xbone from using it. Also you can't put "1080p HD only on Playstation" because well, that's not true. You still have PC and the games which run at 1080p (or less) on both consoles.

The problem is there's no easily identifiable, well known metric to advertise. Pretty much none of the general public are gonna know what a teraflop, or something of that ilk, is.

They already advertised PS4 as the most powerful game console ever released. I think that's as far as they can go without stepping on PC's toes.

Read the OP, that's nothing an asterisk can't get around.

"Casuals don't care about big impressive numbers."

Yes indeed, words every marketing department ever has lived by.

What about all those games that doesn't actually run at 1080p? How and why in their right mind would they enforce this with publishers? Would be consider false advertising as on arrival.

lame idea if you ask me.

I hope they don't. The sooner people get over their resolution felating the better.

Also this, what about felating about actual good games and innovation instead of graphics

Advertise it on a game by game basis? I don't particularly care about resolution but your question has a really obvious answer.

I'd say it's true in more than the slightest. It doesn't mean no one cares, but the nuance of a resolution difference like we're talking about isn't a particularly strong selling point to many. At least compared to the things a savvy advertising agency would put into a commercial.
