So why doesn't Sony advertise their resolution advantage?

The simple answer is that Sony doesn't want to be sued or go anywhere near those murky legal waters.

But as we enter into the world of common sense, it would be ridiculous to think that having a more powerful console that consistently offers games with better graphics is not a competitive advantage (and yes, that means outside of Gaf too, who woulda thunk it)

Sure they do, according to half the people in this thread specs sell consoles which is why:

N64 outsold PS1

Xbox/Gamecube both outsold PS2

PS3 outsold the Wii

And it's clearly the ONLY reason why the PS4 is selling better then the Xb1. Not the pricepoint, the brand, the image the XB1 had, none of that matters at all.

Proof, gimmie.

Unless Sony had it, in which case I'm sure you'd be all over it. And most normal people don't think it'll make the XB1 output in 4k. DX12 is about "putting the pedal to the metal", it's those refinements that make Halo 4 look almost current gen in some circumstances.

PS1 outsold Saturn, PS2 outsold DC, 360 had better multiplatforms and it outsold PS3. N64, GC and first Xbox were released so much later, that they had no chance, and PS1/2 had better 3rd party support.

selling high resolution to the masses is totally not possible

oh wait

retina-100611-1.jpg

Apple aren't selling high resolution screens; they're selling retina screens. That's the entire point, calling it something more catchy than "high pixel density". The average apple buyer has no clue what retina means, they just know it's something good. Fucking brilliant marketing really.

I think this would be significantly harder to do with games though, their "resolutions" are way more complex, with all their upscaling and downscaling and dynamic resoultions and different elements being different resolutions and all that.

pretty simple. It's not always in Sony's control, they can't advertise something that they can't deliver. Not all games on the ps4 run at a higher frame rate or higher resolution than the xbox one.

Because Microsoft would respond by touting their Blast Processing power, confusing the consumer and in the end the full-1080p messaging would be lost in that.

Edit: Never underestimate the power of some people on this forum to assume the mainstream audience will care about the same things they do.

Third party publishers probably will not appreciate Sony pointing out that one of the versions of their multi-platform game is better than the other.

"More pixels than our competitors (excluding PC)"

I just don't think resolution is as important to the average customer and the people who care are going to educate themselves anyway.

what multiplat game besides the sports games don't run at higher res on the PS4 then the X1? also there is clearly a disparity when we all can see that one console regarding multiplats has more games natively running at 1080p then the other. The one thing Sony has been doing regarding the PS4 as a capable gaming console is delivering.

Strangely the only company cares about 1080P is the one who tries hardest to pretend it doesn't matter :

Just more recent games out of the top of my head: Destiny, AC Unity, FC4...i'm sure there are plenty more

Because nobody gives a shit to be honest.
I read stuff like this all the time, nobody gives a shit, it doesn't matter, you can't even tell the difference etc. Plenty of people do give shit. This time around I think gamers are more formative and in touch with what's going on then they have ever been. Even casuals who aren't as informed care enough to want to own the best console regarding specs power and what would be best for them. While they may not take the time to educate themselves they do listen out threw word of mouth and often would like to make decisions without having to feel like it was the wrong one when lots of money is involved.

I just pulled up a list regarding res for both platforms and there is quite a disparity going on. I am on my vita atm and not to keen on how to copy and paste links but there is a gap between the two consoles regarding multiplats clearly. I do think Sony just simply advertising the PS4 as the most powerful gaming console in the world is enough.

The people that care already know. To others I would imagine it is just technical jargon, and not top of the list in terms of advertising.

Until the general public knows the difference between native res vs. upscaled, doubt it'll happen. No need to really rub it in that much anyway, both companies already advertise multiplats as exclusives, it'll just add more fuel to the fire

Isn't that a good thing?

I rather see both companies make it a challenge to never release sub-1080p games or they lose bragging rights. Consumers benefit in the end.

its fun teaching/showing people that are willing to learn. Showed a buddy of mines the difference between native and upscaled res and showed him what crushed blacks looked like vs a intended picture and it was like he had a epiphany lol. Some people would be really appreciative on being shown the truth. You walk into a bestbuy or walmart to shop for a tv with a untrained eye and all those settings being maxed out look amazing to the average uninformed consumer.

Some of the shooters + the majority of the platformers and racing games.

IGN list? If so, it's missing a lot of games that are on both systems (sports in particular).

The majority of games on both consoles are 1080p -- PS4 has more though obviously. Think as of right now around 95% of PS4 games are 1080p where as around 70% of Xbox One games are 1080p.

I honestly went into this gen thinking 1080p natively would be the standard. The fact that one console has to play catch-up is a little underwhelming. We also will expect graphics and performance to get better threw out these consoles lifespans before they hit the limitations ceiling. I suspect the PS4 will get threw atleast 5 years with high quality well performing games not so sure the X1 will make it threw 3. When devs start to find the sweet spots within the consoles hardware over time will things get better or worst regarding res and fps?

I was honestly expecting 720p/60 FPS and 1080p/30 FPS would be what the majority of games this gen would fall under before the consoles were revealed. Didn't even think of 900p so I guess things are better than what I expected.

Both consoles will have more impressive looking games as we continue to move on. PS2 gap vs. the competition at its time was bigger than the gap we see now with PS4 and Xbox One but the PS2 still had very good looking games past its fourth year (Okami, God of War, Gran Turismo 4, etc.). Same will more than likely be true of the Xbox One.

When devs start to find the sweet spots within the consoles hardware over time will things get better or worst regarding res and fps?

Devs will find many tricks to make their games look better. I could see there being a bit more 900p multiplats (games that are 900p on both systems) as this gen moves on but overall I think things will mainly stay the same way -- 900p and 1080p.

I don't think games on the PS4 and Xbox One will be under 900p after this year; PS4 because it has more power and there's never been a sub-900p game on it. Xbox One since it seems like MS is doing all that they can for games to not be under 900p on their system due to "resolutiongate".

It is a good thing at first glance, but I can just picture how chaotic the gaming media would make it or flip it around into something different. Better for Sony to stay humble at this point and let Digital Foundry make resolution articles. The moment Sony shows any kind of arrogance..."see??? this is why I hate Sony!", even though they might not even know the difference.

It really is cool for people that want to know the difference, I just think some people would also be impatient about it or we'd see a flood of system war articles about it. It's bad enough as it is

I remember a time when Sega advertised how much more powerful they were over Nintendo. That didn't work out very well for them. Sony should make it a talking point but not a selling point. Let their first party games speak for the console.
