Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

A stable 650 W PSU is fine, you could even go with a 'weaker' power unit. For the 670 and the 970. .
No idea what you mean with good fans on the G1. Are you worried about noise and temperature? Gigabyte is following a very simple solution here. They are using a cooling system with a biger surface and 3 fans instead of the 'normal' 2 fan solution. That makes the card way bigger and a bit more power hungry. Also gigabyte is promising to use only selected Chips for the g1, this gives the card higher OC capabilitys.
But this doesn't make the G1 a quiet card with around 2,6 sone under heavy load. This is still a good value, but not a quiet one. All this combined seems to make the G1 a good card for OC. People are claiming to go up to 1500mhz stable boost with the G1 and still hitting under 80°C. And this is a very good sign.

If you want a more quiet card you could go with the msi or the asus gtx 970.

I hit 1470 with my MSI, it's dead slient, never goes above 65 Celsius.

Would a 550W psu do for a 970, or I gotta get that extra 100W in?
My Corsair HX520W, albeit old (6 years), still works like a charm but started to make funny noises (some crackling/buzzing sound) when 970 was under full load (Metro 2033 Redux or Furmark for example) - the PC didn't crash, there were no artifacts, nothing BUT even though I love that PSU, I decided not to take any chances and bought Coolermaster V850 just to be sure.
So yea, a good 520-550W PSU *should* take care of 970 just fine.

The buzzing was probably the card. The 970 uses less power than my 660TI.

Smart move, don't take any chances with PSUs.
The V850 is fantastic and you won't ever have to upgrade unless you want to go tri SLI.

No, it was not. It was the PSU. 100%
Checked it myself (Almost fully pressed my ear on the PSU, the sound was definitely coming from there).
The card is silent, no coil whine or any other weird sounds.
Like I said, the PSU is fine, but probably buckled under heavy load because of old age.

It uses less than my old GTX760 lol

Really, 500/550w is easily enough for GTX 970, at least the MSI one. Haven't checked how much the other ones use power though, but I doubt it's much more.

1080p monitor here too, we're gonna be playing on ultra settings for a loong time dude lol

My gf is so pissed off that I bought a new pc rig, so I bought her a new giant mickey mouse cupcake lol

Is the FTW version even worth $390? Or better to just go for the MSI Gaming 4G?

You should be carefull with this one. I've read only one review of this card and it wasn't that good. It's one of the more powerfull costum design 970 out there but under heavy load it seems to be very loud with 4,0 sone and 1,9 sone idle. Maybe this is only an easy fixable bios bug but still for 390 way overpriced in my opinion.

Oh I belive you, the MSI is a very good GTX 970. You did nothing wrong with it, both cards support stable overclocking, solid performance and good cooling. They both cost around the same too and also both of them are sold out all the time. I nearly bought the MSI and changed my mind in the last second. No Idea why.

I'm currently using a 2gb EVGA GeForce 770.. thinking of upgrading to one of these new cards and I had some questions:

(1) What manufacturer should I be looking to get?
(2) What model provides the best future proofing (not that it's really possible, but I had gotten a 770 with the idea of going SLI if need be down the road, but I'm looking at the jump in performance between a 980/970 and my 770 and thinking doubling down on a 770 would be a waste compared to just upgrading my card...
(3) Any idea what I could get for my used 770?

The only knock on the FTW was the fan noise. All FTW cards should now be shipping with the new bios with a better fan curve, and 0 dB mode. That price isn't bad if you need a new mouse, or you can sell it. The card also has a free backplate here.

Launch BIOS - Idle 42.7 dB / Load 47.5 dB
Updated BIOS - Idle 36.3 dB / Load 42 dB

I think EVGA flubbed the 970 launch, but they rebounded well. If I didn't already have an ASUS 970 Strix on the way, I would have bought the EVGA 970 FTW.

From reviews though, it's the highest factory OC out of all the GTX 970s and is very close to even being GTX 980 levels.

I will have to ask though for people that have dealt with other companies, outside of EVGA, who has great customer service, and if something needs to be replaced, will do it quickly?

I did flash my vanilla Zotac 970s BIOS afterward to increase the power limit. It now can use up to 130%. It seems to have made my boost overclock more stable, but unfortunately the voltage does still fluctuate. Hopefully Zotac releases their own modified BIOS eventually.

No coil whine on my G1. But this mofo is long! At first I thought it wasn't going to fit in my case and almost had a heart attack. But then I noticed I could take one of drive cages out to make it fit. I had to rearrange my drives but it all worked out in the end.

DSR downsampling seems to break in game vsync in The Witcher 2. It locks the framerate to 40 fps. With vsync disabled my framerate stays between 85-100 fps 2560x1600.

Hey guys, regarding GTA V for PC coming in late January and current Nvidia cards:

Is anyone here expecting (or hoping) that Ultra settings, 60 FPS @ 1920 x 1080p will be possible with just one of the non-Titan cards such as a super clocked 780 Ti or super clocked 980 without having to resort to SLI ?

I mean given the motherboard, CPU, RAM, cooling, etc. are also up to scratch. I know GTA V system requirements haven't been released yet and lets say anti-aliasing is turned off or kept to a minimum.

I sold my EVGA GTX780 SC ACX Friday for $320. I'm stuck with an old EVGA GTS450 until my ASUS GTX970 STRIX comes in either today, or Monday.

I'm only in the hole for $20 with my GTX780, but the wait feels bad man.

This will be me in a couple of months. How is the change?

Any owners of 970s also own Project Cars can tell me what their performance is? I would like to get that card but only if I can nearly max that game and have it going at 60 FPS.

I have a 980 and at max settings, with high AA, and 16+ cars on track I get frame drops (from 60fps). Add weather to that and the frame rate can drop to 40fps and an average below 60 frames. If you want truly locked frame rates you are probably going to have to set everything to high versus ultra.

I am hoping the next couple months of development add a little optimization.

Jesus, these cards are nuts. I've been testing my EVGA 980 GTX OC and it's just destroying anything I throw at it at 1080p/60fps. 8x MSAA? No problem, still 60fps. 4k DSR? No problem, still 60fps.

I have yet to find anything that stops this card outside of benchmarks (don't have Crysis 3, but testing on Crysis Warhead and I'm still getting 2k DSR x 8x MSAA ~60fps; any minor drops seem game/cpu/ram related as changing the MSAA or DSR doesn't really seem to effect it)

I've had good GPUs before (owned at 580 GTX which was a beast when it came out, but Metro 2033/Crysis and such still couldn't hit 60fps maxed even with 2x AA), but this is on a whole different level. It's just so so overpowered. gj Nvidia!

and the 970 is a way better deal. That extra 20% power in the 980 is necessary since nothing even comes close to using the full power.

When using DSR 4k, what should the smoothing percentage be to get the best image quality?

I saw a little bit of mention of this a while back, so I thought I'd chime in.

Has anyone tried out running Borderlands 2/The Pre Sequel on their 970? I only have BL2, but I see people reporting similar problems on the new game as well.

I set up a Asus Strix 970 earlier this week, and it runs like a charm. My performance in Shadow of Mordor and Arkham Origins are right up there with the benchmarks that are floating around, so my general performance isn't an issue.

Borderlands 2, on the other hand, is giving me frame drops as low as 30-45 fps when combat gets heavy. I know that phsx isn't exactly efficient, but this should be more than enough hardware to handle BL2 @ 1080p.

CPU bottleneck shouldn't be an issue here with an i5 2500k OC'd to 4.3Ghz.

Looking around, it looks like its a pretty common problem floating around that will hopefully be fixed by drivers, but its worrisome when I see people reporting stable framerates in the 100's with similar setups.

I've encountered no problems so far, while playing bot BL2 and The Pre-Sequel. It's all smooth 60+ fps with max settings.
