Xbox One Available for $349 in the U.S. This Holiday Season

The console hasn't been out for a year yet and already MS is desperate to drop $150 on the initial price (doesn't matter if anyone says that it had kinect, that thing is crap).
Sounding more and more like the original Xbox launch, and that's not a good thing

Huh?

Ye i bet investors would be overjoyed that they are losing 50 mil per 1 million units and that's without the bundled games they are giving away.

It depends on how you view it. They lose "50 million per 1 million units sold" - but how much will they make back over time? Between Xbox One subs, royalties off 3rd party games, plus revenue from their own published games - chances are that that "money lost on sale of console" is made back 10 fold with a year.

Bring it to Canada and you have a sale. I wanna try MC:C and FH2 :)
We already have it, when you consider exchange. MS, unlike Sony, didn't raise the price when the dollar dropped 10%.

$350 US is $392 Canadian. The Kinectless box has always been $399 here.

lol really? Why doesn't it matter? There are people who want it for streaming purposes alone. Why would they get the kinectless SKU?

"Damned if they do, damned if they don't."

Wasn't the popular thought here that MS needs to make their box cheaper than the PS4? They are doing that. Now it isn't a good thing?

Agreed. This is awful news. They should have kept the system at $500. Don't know what they're thinking.

Are these posts serious?

November 2013: $500
June 2014: $400
November 2014: $350

Not bad. I think there's room for more added value. Maybe three months of gold to really sweeten the deal.

They need to be careful though, any more price cuts (temporary or otherwise) and their console value will bottom out with consumers.
I think it already has in some way. The system isn't even a year old and the price difference is night and day.

Is the thread title messed up or something? It's 50 bucks off anything x1 related console. The 349 price point is the vanilla version.

Ah, this must be what my manager was hinting at yesterday at work. This is going to move a hell of a lot of consoles and to be honest, if I were Sony, I'd be shitting myself. PS4 has no big games to draw consumers to them while MS has the MCC and Sunset Overdrive prepped to dominate. I daresay that Sony and Co. with their hubris about selling a console with no games for so long finally got punched in the mouth with this deal. This is what happens when you underestimate your opponent Sony. Get prepared to be 2nd again in America and soon WW.

Yeah, I'm a little confused, too - could someone with a little more knowledge of the pricing explain how much the AC:U and Call of Duty bundles will cost? $349.99?

Eh, let's not get carried away. Halo is definitely going to help. Sunset Overdrive has good reviews but I think we should wait to see how it does; wait to see if word spreads out about its solid reviews.

And in terms of worldwide I would say it's over. America is still up for grabs though.

I expect Sony will respond to this with an equally strong deal. However, I expect Sony will work with retailers to create bundles that include something like a free game and a year of PS+ for $399.99.

I should really learn to not buy a console at launch :/

This is like a poor imitation of Miles Q, who in turn is a poor mans Chinner.

Sarcasm? Sometimes i cant tell with you.

Thanks for the laugh

What's funny about it? Absorbing a loss to gain marketshare is a play Microsoft has used before in the CE side of their business.

Do you really think that this time last year Microsoft saw themselves cutting out Kinect, dropping $50 and bundling AAA title just to stay competitive? It's effectively a $210 price reduction from the $500 they launched with.

Yes, it's a good deal for consumers and will likely help them win Nov + Dec NPD but what's wrong with analyzing the business angle of the move?

i can understand the rah rah of the american side of things but no way in hell does microsoft recover outside the us.

edit: oh right, i forgot to check the tag.

I don't think Sony underestimated them. Some projects were not ready for the fall, one big project got cancelled. They can't go toe to toe with Microsoft in terms of price cuts, because they simply don't have the money. Sony is doing all they can, worldwide.

I think it already has in some way. The system isn't even a year old and the price difference is night and day.

Sales between now and January will tell the story. I think there is some truth to them having hamstrung their own market with how aggressive on pricing they've been, but the alternative would have been to do what Nintendo did and just hope it gets better, which probably would have been even worse.

As with all things, time will tell, but I don't foresee them making huge inroads into the PS4 with these deals.

It's a good deal and puts the Sony offerings (that we know of) to shame, but it's going to be an uphill battle to convince consumers it won't be ever cheaper or there won't be a better value bundle just down the road.

Yeah, I'm a little confused, too - could someone with a little more knowledge of the pricing explain how much the AC:U and Call of Duty bundles will cost? $349.99?
AC:U bundle is normally $400, so it'll be $350. COD bundle is usually $499.99, so it'll be $449.99 (unless they take $50 of $449.99 because many retailers already slashed the price to $449.99).

It's in the link,.

1TB Cod bundle is 449, the other two are 349. edit: and 449 for the AC bundle + Kinect and Dance Central.

Sounds like they took their black Friday deal and extended it all month long!

Hope they manufactured enough bundles, because those things are gonna sell out fast!!

Wait I keep hearing that its not that XB1 sales aren't bad but that Ps4 sales are great so why does MS continue to drop the price and give away free games?

Crazy deal none the less. Hope sony matches so I can't get a white one.

November 2013: $500 Kinect Bundled
June 2014: $400 Stand Alone
November 2014: $350 Stand Alone
November 2014: $450 Kinect bundled

fixed

400$ earlier this year wasn't a price cut, this is a real price cut. You are getting same thing but 50$ less.

$100M is a lot of money to throw away for something that may not appreciably alter the course of this generation. And to make back that $50 per console "10 fold within a year" each person would have to spend thousands. Hard to imagine that being common just given how many people in this thread are talking about picking up this deal to make the Xbox One their 2nd or 3rd console. How many people already paying for PS Plus are going to carry a 2nd subscription service? How many are still going to buy most of their games on something else? How many were going to get an Xbox One at $400 and are now just paying less?

If there was some magic equation that rendered this price reduction risk free they wouldn't have waited so long. Or stopped at $349.

Lol.

Sad & Deluded.

Wait I keep hearing that its not that XB1 sales are bad but that Ps4 sales are great so why does MS continue to drop the price and give away free games?

Because they know that many gamers (thousands upon thousands) will be moving to current gen this Holiday season and therefore they want to get a huge portion of that group by any means necessary. This move on top of COD marketing and Halo MCC will definitely push some more current 360 gamers over to the XB1.

you are aware that the wii u always comes with one or two games of its own right? the wii u is 'effectively' $200-210 if the xbox one bundle is 'effectively' $290.
I wasn't actually aware the holiday Wii U bundle was priced at $299, for some reason I thought it was higher.

This is purely opinion/conjecture on my part, but I doubt that the perceived savings on the inclusion of Nintendo Land amounts to anywhere near that much, while similarly SM3DW at least, will be relatively old by the holiday - although I don't know how well the price on the title has held. MK8 will still be relatively new.

Comparatively, I would think the brand new Assassin's Creed title would be easier to calculate savings.

The perceived price is probably still lower for the Wii U, although they'll probably be appealing to different market segments anyway.

At any rate, the nominal prices are still surprisingly close.

Wait... with the bundles, does this effectively make the Xbox One cheaper than the Wii U?

Not sure how you got that out of it. Outside of the fact that Nintendo has always sold the Wii U with a game bundled in (and this was back at the $350 price point).... for $300 you still can get a brand new console anywhere with a game or TWO games packed in (NSMBU + Luigi U) and this is before any special holiday pricing or deals (if there isn't a price drop, there will be a "buy a Wii U, get more games free" promotion... at least for Black Friday).

The only comparably priced bundle is probably the MK8 bundle, which is going for $350 at the few places that have them left, but their packing a game AND extra controllers into it. Still a better "value for the dollar" in terms of gaming.

The only way you could argue it's cheaper than the Wii U figuratively (and that's the only way it can be argued, since it's not literally... because every Wii U sale includes a free game) is that for the price difference there, you're getting singificantly better hardware, thus on a power to dollar value, the Xbox One could be considered cheaper - but this was already arguable at the $400 price point.

Literally... no, it's not cheaper... it's still $50 off from being the same price and even then, Nintendo's Wii U is profitable per sale right now, so they might have room to drop the price and they certainly have room for black friday deals. This basically IS Microsoft's black friday deal, all winter long, and they may just keep it afterwords. The Wii U can do more enticing things - 1 day drop on all consoles to $200 as an example. If you buy Smash you get a free game promotion thing (like they did for MK8).

Why would they drop the price if SO bundles are sold out?

desperation man, they need to get the consoles out there, they will take major losses just so they can say they beat Sony, which is kind of sad but whatever, because screw it what's another 3 months of paying off a best buy credit card, maybe i'll pick up a bundaroo too if they are basically giving them away

Had to happen, Microsoft couldn't let Sony run away with it unchallenged and the consumer swing to Playstation would be too great with friends, family, colleges helping solidify PS4 as the platform of choice. The PS plus subscriptions are a killer blow to Xbox, that's money Microsoft might not see again and makes a two console owner more unlikely this generation as another subscription could be off putting. If this price drop and good game line up doesn't work, ouch. Microsoft need to be cheap enough that Sony won't follow until consumers swing back their way. The nuclear option if all else fails, make online gaming free on Xbox One, that would be a dagger through the heart.

Sony will benefit from 3rd-Party games as CoD, GTA V, AC Unity, Dragon Age and Far Cry 4 though. I fear that LPB 3 will be irrelevant.
