Major PS4 System Software Update v2.0 Available NOW

Sweet. Custom backgrounds. Now all I need is something like this on my PS4.

Sony, please deliver!

Yup. I need that Corn Love parity between my PS3 and PS4!

They are. It's YouTube. And it's coming in this update.

But it already posts your videos in the what's new section when you publish them to Facebook. I'd imagine it's the same for YouTube when it comes. That's better than posting a link in the what's new section, IMO.

I think see what he means. Right now, if I share to facebook but to a limited group (say "family") and not public, a link is created on "what's new" for everyone on my PSN list but it's a blank video for anyone who is not on the limited Facebook list I shared with. And even people who on Facebook are on the Family list but have not linked their PSN accounts, they won't see the video in What's new. Presumably it will be the same if we upload to youtube but set it to private or share it in a limited fashion.

If we could privately "store" content in the cloud somewhere, whether youtube, facebook or whatever, and only selectively share to the what's new profiles of some of our PSN friends that would make a ton of sense.

But that requires a lot of things. It requires PSN friend groups, which we dont have, it requires cloud storage, which we don't have, and direct access to sharing with those PSN groups, which we don't have.

In the UK PS Access youtube channel they go through the top 10 things you need to know about the update and he mentions that you will be able to create your own themes. Was this known?

I was finally able to watch the video. MAN! This is a huge update that is really improving a lot of key features. I'm incredibly happy about this.

I can't help but think he must be mistaken, as we haven't heard that anywhere else. I hope they're right, but we'll see.

PS4 users cannot create their own custom themes or custom background images "at this time". You can, however, choose your own background colour.

Hmmm

You think they'll add sound to the dynamic backgrounds this time? It was kind of annoying to have that great rain theme from "Heavy Rain" without the sound from the rain.

YouTube allows you to Post videos as public, Unlisted or private. If 2.0 follows the API as they do with Facebook. Unlisted is the option that you want. It will be saved to your YouTube account and only be assessable with a direct link. This should be what you want.

I fully agree. I know how to works as I use it extensively in conjunction with Google+'s circles feature. And it works wonders when you combine the whole thing of groups, contacts, easy selective sharing and channel subscriptions.

But please walk me through this: I save a video as unlisted on Youtube from the PS4. Now tell me how do I easily share it with a group of 15 friends on PSN who are fans of Driveclub. Say have it appear on their what's new. (Those 15 may or may not have linked their youtube/facebook/twitter accounts to the PS4, and if they have, I don't necessarily also have them as Facebook friends or Google+ contacts.)

If alongside Youtube we get Google+ contact sync and all those sharing abilities, that's something else, but we don't even have Facebook contact syncyet.

It is a lot to ask of them.

Well, considering they would have to rewrite the friends system to allow for categories, it is quite a bit. Otherwise, since the friend limit is so huge now, you would be seeing a constant flow of notifications every second or so.

Then it wasn't thought out well. I'd rather have 100 friends that I feel connected to and know their status without having to leave my game than 2,000 friends where I have to leave what I'm playing to find out if they are online.
I feel more connected on my Vita and when I had a PS3.

Do people really have that many friends that this would be an issue? Nobody complained about it last gen. And for streamers or other people with a lot of followers, just give the option to toggle notifications off like they do for all the other notifications.

Can we pause background downloads i.e. the downloads after the game is installed?

For example, Sniper Elite is 20+ GB, but 3 GB install is required to play. So the game is there in Downloads section only till 3 GB, and once done, it gets removed from there and continues downloading in background. You can check the current size in Game information menu. There is no way to pause or stop that, no matter whatever you do. It hogs your bandwidth like anything, even affects your store browsing and MP gaming. This needs to be fixed on priority.

2.0 drops tomorrow? I just won't even turn my PS4 on tomorrow, zero chance PSN doesn't go down.

Why do you think that? Firmware updates are not hosted on PSN multiplayer servers, they don't require PSN authentication (you don't even need an account to get the update), and the streaming tech is p2p. So apart from maybe an increased number of users online tomorrow I'm not seeing where the extra load is coming from.

If you share to YouTube and they allow you to choose unlisted. It will show up in What's New for all your PSN friends. I doubt you'll be able to limit it to specific friends.

They way "unlisted" works with youtube(proper), you don't need an account to view. It simply makes it unsearchable on youtube. Unlike facebook where people can't view something that they are not given permission to view.

You don't have to buy them, you know.

I'll be happy to buy some if they have some I like. Just limit them to around $2 US.

So, unless Sony does something completely wrong anyone on your PSN list should be able to watch it.

So, if I post something to Facebook, like a capture, purchase, or whatever, it shows up in everyone else's What's New? And then that links them to my FB page, which shows my real name? Is there any way to prevent that? That's why I didn't use my real name on PSN. =/

No. They can only see if if they are friends with you on Facebook and privacy option is sharing it with them.

They sold a lot of themes on the PS3 and still allowed customs.

they also had free online and now they don't. it wouldn't be unusual for them to not allow it. also hacking or something.

you act like i'm saying its bad or im against custome themes. i'm not. i just have a feeling they might not allow it this time around and it may or may not be due to nefarious/monetary reasons :)

That video suggests they're taking updates a bit more seriously than they have been doing. Hopefully Sony are starting as they mean to go on.

Clearly you haven't been using it, lol.

Searching PSN for a name to message, adding/removing people from friend list, receiving messages but taking minutes (or days) to be able to actually see them....

It's a giant clusterfuck right now.

I'm pretty sure that is possibly the fault of your PS4 (there was some OS whining thread where people complained about this same problem and others told how it could be fixed) and not PSN being so shitty it can't handle a few messages. Something is screwed up with your PS4 if messaging etc. takes that long, and maybe returning it to factory settings or something similar could fix it. My messages go through immediately & load really fast and I haven't had any problems with friend list stuff either, so it's not necessarily PSN's fault.

No, It just embeds the video from the link.

do you think it works like magic? How can you share it with someone that you dont have as contact?

Yes, you can share easily but you have to setup it properly on facebook - create a group of friends you want to share it with and then later share to that group via PS4.

It is very simple and requires 2 minute effort from you.
