Fighting Games Weekly | Oct 27-Nov 2 | A Lot Of Shit Went Down

DOA actually didn't have that stigma until DOAX Volleyball. A lot of people played DOA3 consistently but when Volleyball came out many people didn't look at the series the same way.

Yeah, I do remember it have a better rep more than ten years ago.

I think it was some compilation disk that they put in kiosks or something with a whole bunch of games

I probably got it in a magazine or something

I just remember playing the demo so much and never buying the full game

just looked it up.

How do FGW regulars feel about Dead or Alive? Do you play it, like it, hate it, just like the breasts? What do you think of the free-2-play implementation?

I don't play it, but it can be fun. I think it's the ideal F2P model. Swap out a character each month and they give out a free character every once in a while as a promotion. If all I cared about was Momiji, I would only spend $5 total on the game in its lifetime. I think it's $5 per char, right?

DoA probably had that stigma since the start of the series. It had boobs physics on PS1, I mean, how many 3D PS1 games had boob physics? Also, I remember that stigma being there during DoA2 days, it was all over gaming magazines at the time. It just wasn't as bad before DoAX.

Doa is way more confusing to me than vf man. every time I fucked with 5 I just left feeling confused and because of that I can't really make a coherent statement about what I think about it. Not sure how I feel about holds either.

Vf is so simple and elegant that within a couple hours of messing with it I was completely absorbed by the system and the little mind games that come up.

That said it's a shame it gets a bad wrap for the tits stuff because a lot of people seemingly really dig it. Not sure if that stuff has helped or hurt the franchise more.

The PS1 boobs were so shit hardly anyone cared. DOA wasn't even that big until DOA 2 Hardcore and DOA3 on Xbox... before that it had the stigma of being a VF clone.

It was a very good looking PS1 game too(image probably taken from an emulator):

But yea, the series wasn't big until PS2 days.

I messed with doa for a few hours. I can't say I enjoyed any aspect of it. It may be my least favorite 3d fighter.

Haven't touched the series since PS2 days, only played DoA1 demo and DoA2(not hardcore, the original shitty port).

I don't know man, looks like ass to me compared to T3.

T3 was the year after DOA. So it obviously should look better. T2 was the year before and it looked way worse than DOA.

The arcade version of DOA and T3 aren't too shabby in either case though. T3 is definitely a little more advanced but DOA isn't ugly compared to it.

I don't think DoA is all that bad but its worse than TTT2, VF and SC5. I just haven't bothered with the series in ages. They were really waaay ahead of their time in the original xbox generation though.

Luffy gonna steamroll again btw

Also, good shit at Daigo vs Justin first round. Too bad they can't auto lose and both get knocked into losers but at least one of them will gtfoh

I remember liking DOA back in the days of DOA2 Xtreme and DOA2 Ultimate. Never had an original Xbox until the end of it's life cycle, so I didn't play DOA3. By the time DOA4 came out, I had lost interest in the series.

When DOA5 Core Fighters(the F2P version) came out I gave the series another go, and I find myself really enjoying it. I definitely don't find it as good as other the 3D fighters, but DOA just has a real visceral level of fun to me. Some of the most fun I've had playing fighting games recently is with DOA5.

I haven't really taken it online much, but when I have the opportunity, I'll get together with some of the folks from the OT and see if we can have good matches.

Unfortunately, nobody in my scene really talks about the game. When DOA5 Final Round comes out, I'll try and stir up interest. I do think the game is worth playing, it's pretty solid in my eyes.

This has nothing to do with the fighting games

http://www.goldper10.com/article/300.html

but it's an article on how much players in the League of Legends scene make for being a pro vs streaming on Twitch. With that said the 2nd part I figure has some relevancy to fighting games since our community streams on Twitch as well.

TL:DR

1) The starting CPM for Twitch is actually $3.50 per 1000 Ad Impressions (Obviously higher for the big name streamers)
2) Subbing to a stream costs $4.99 a month, with half that money going to the streamer
3)That would make the minimum possible average viewership to make a living off of streaming in the 1,500 to 2,000 range as that amounts to $26,000-$35,000 a year. (This is if 50% of your viewers use adblock. Obviously higher if less of your viewers use adblock, and lower if more of your viewers use adblock.)
4) Basically the big name League guys can pull around $5-10k per month if about 20-40K viewers per stream (with 2 ad per hour, and 50% on adblock).

Not bad at all for doing something you enjoy. Obviously we have no idea what the long term viability of it is but I sure as hell would have preferred streaming over working retail in college.

From a gameplay perspective DOA5 is a very good take on the series. I don't know if you knew but Itagaki was a Sakurai like guy with his series. Since he attached way too much importance to his favorite characters (the ninjas) he made them the better characters in the game. I don't remember if it's in DOA3 or 4 but Hayabusa was a better grapler than the graplers of the game, that was ridiculous.

Talking with the EU DOA community, they told me it was a great combination of two people that made DOA5 a good game : Hayashi as the producer and Shimbori as the director but also as the lead of gameplay. THey understood perfectly what was wrong in DOA since the first game and corrected while keeping the game feeling, that's impressive.

Also DOA5 has the most women in the tournaments I help to organize. Almost a third of the players are women. :)

Tampa Bison wrote a pretty interesting article about how Chu Chu got into the Capcom Cup and how he feels about it

http://www.esportsmax.com/article/cnb-chuchus-road-capcom-cup

A pretty good read IMO if you're following the Capcom Pro Tour and wondered yourself how he got in without ever hearing of his name at any big tournaments.

I have some issues with the article.

First, this should have had a huge "OP ED" tag/line/whatever on it. This idea that someone "deserves" or "doesn't deserve" to be in the cup is subjective, and frankly, irrelevant. Capcom set the rules, distributed the points and ChuChu played within those rules to qualify. End of story.

Second, there's no comparison to Du. Du didn't travel extensively outside of his region (North America), and he competed online to earn points, things TB called ChuChu out specifically on, and Du has a chance of being in the cup as well.

It's also interesting that ChuChu got second on PS3 and XBox online to Du in October and earned less points than Du did for those two events.

This isn't to say that Du should be called out in the same way, more that neither should be called out in this way.

It seems to me that TB has more of an issue with the structure of the cup (specifically with the weight that online points give) than with ChuChu, and he's directing that (improperly, IMO) in the direction of ChuChu.

Gotta give ChuChu props for playing the system.

Exactly.

They do. Whenever I grew out my nails I'd always break one playing FGs.

Anybody who can play on stick without breaking a nail is pretty high tier.

Reminds me of watching CEO, I kept thinking "how does Ricky play with those nails."

I love you all.

How bout that Daigo.

You guys missed the top player pool party with them too.

Blame Twitch new ToS.

That "Ultra Combo" logo in the center is distracting me, but as always, Desk is on point with his videos.

James Chen wrote a preview article on the capcom cup

http://www.ultrachentv.com/2014/10/28/the-capcom-cup-2014-preview/

What's of note is that James calculated the possible matchups if everyone is seeded through point totals

this would be an amazing bracket

So much salt would flow if this was the bracket.

I believe that point totals should absolutely serve as seeds into the bracket. It's really the only fair way.

If you want a better placing in the bracket, don't want to play your teammates? Play more, get better. Done.

we need to study why this effect occurs, given the fact that the current atmosphere in gaming!

my first DOA was the dreamcast one that came in the demo. I quickly noticed how polished and tight the gameplay was. Coming off tekken 3, the whole presentation was just mind-boggling .

the stage hazards, the crazy ninja moves, the hits felt real. everything about it felt really well done and meticulously created. Itagaki also rode that wave into ninja gaiden and i could tell he was a good game creator even if his aesthetic choices were a bit out there.

I lost track of the series after volleyball cause i felt game had lost their vision of a really tight 3d fighter and became more about the visuals and obvious titillation. i also felt this was the same time Soul Calibur also started to stray somewhat and start bringing in the 3rd party gimmicks.

Perhaps the sexualisation isn't so much of a put-off? It's like dudes wanting to play big buff dudes like zangief and whatever. Self projection and what not.

Fine. Page me Cobalt!

Slide method is pretty easy. As weird as it sounds it's like throwing a frisbee to me, like the way your hand is going from one direction to the other. I might make a gif just like I made a gif for Mes on how to do Ultras.

That image is strangely hypnotic.

The DOA community in France is welcoming to all players. The "leaders" are a a mix of cool people, men and women, that works together. Some are on the gameplay/competitive side, some on the franchise/fanservice side.
It's my opinion but as I like playing cool/muscular/sexy characters and to have a various cast of characters, I think female are the same with female characters and DOA has a diverse cast of characters, all with their style, personnality and goals. It helps finding your favorite character.
Street Fighter should have more female characters. In USF4 there is like 10 female characters for more than 40 characters. It's not enough in my opinion.

DoA has always felt bad to me, can't really put my finger on it. Definitely the evades feel really weird, movement in general isn't as unrestricted as I want it to be.

I'd probably get used to the stun system if I took the time to learn the game.

ssh, don't anger the professional victims and political correctednessionists with things that don't fit their narrative. Though it's probably just another example of systemic oppression somehow. Everything is.

I think it's an interesting phenomenon and should be studied more.

On the game itself, I've never tried playing it seriously and the last time I touched a DOA game was years ago on some demo disc, but just watching DOA5 something about the movement bothers me, at least visually (it could actually feel really great, wouldn't know).

I would think more girls play DOA because there's a lot of female characters (that may offer movre variety than Loli 1 vs Loli 2).
/shrug

I don't have a problem with DOA except the animations really feel jarring to me. Something is up with them.

DOA3? You mean the game advertised with "she kicks high"? Sure, dog.

Absolute Battle is going down here in Dallas Nov 14-16th and it's looking to be one of our biggest tournaments yet. We have Jan, Ranmasama, Busby, F-Champ, RayRay, Angelic and Noel Brown confirmed for Marvel and Snake Eyez, Native Impact, iRedman and a tentative PR Rog and Ricky Ortiz for Street Fighter. It feels good to see how my community has grown so much.

http://www.versusgameplay.com/events/absolute-battle-5/

It'd be cool if you guys would check out the stream and help support our community. I'm gonna do my best to show that Texas and the South has killers too.
