Costume Quest 2 confirmed for European Wii U release this week

Just a separate PSA as this wasn't in the weekly PR.

When Double Fine confirmed that it was bringing Costume Quest 2 to the Wii U, it wasn't surprising that a number of fans were rather pleased. The original gained serious popularity thanks to its cute visuals and solid adventure RPG gameplay, so the promise of a sequel that'll improve on that release is certainly tempting.

Of course, the trick-or-treat premise suits Halloween rather well, so its absence from today's European Nintendo Download news concerned some that were looking forward to the release. We've been in touch with Nintendo UK to clarify and, thankfully, it's been confirmed that it'll still arrive this week; panic for Costume Quest fans is averted, then, while it should hopefully be all set for North America, too.

Do you plan to pick up the game? (I'm kind of on the fence since I like to play series in order and haven't played the first yet.)

I was going to buy it but then I found out there's no off-tv play. Unacceptable.

And it's another Double Fine game.... just like The Cave. They seem to hate off-TV play, for some reason.

Reposting from Nintendo DL thread, re: The Cave:

Here's the thing. The game is basically unplayable in Single Player, IMO. Maybe I just lack patience (this surely wouldn't be the first evidence for that theory), but even playing The Cave in co-op with me using the GamePad and my wife using the Wiimote + Nunchuk, it was quite tedious to switch between two characters in different parts of large maps, especially when you have to sync up multiple actions at once at times. I can't even conceive of how you could play with three characters as one person without it being an insanely frustrating experience, since you literally have to move each one individually, even when they're all side-by-side and going to the same place.

Just my two cents, FWIW. Still, that doesn't explain why CQ2 wouldn't be on Wii U. (And I really would like the first game to be available on Wii U before this would be released for Wii U. Makes me feel like we'll get Broken Age Part 2 on Wii U or somethin'.)

Didn't know this was coming to Wii U. I might pick it up. No Off-TV kind of blows, but I rarely use the feature so can't really say i'll miss it. It should definitely be there though. No excuses at this point.

No Off-TV sucks but since I really want to play this, I'm getting it. Not like I would have the option with any of the other console versions.

Yep, though that is only from my experience with Unity. Either way, it shouldn't be that difficult to add off-tv play for such a capable team.

Double Fine don't use Unity though, they have their own in-house engine, which I presume makes it harder to implement. Either way, they are launching this on quite a number of different platforms simultaneously so it's not really a surprise that they lack the resources to add a feature to just one version of the game, even if it would make perfect sense. I seem to recall that the Cave ran pretty sluggishly on Wii U at times (I don't think optimisation has ever been a strong point for Double Fine), so rendering onto two screens at once might have led to unacceptable performance issues.

How stupid. It's a no buy for me as well for the same reason.

At the of end of the day, content is king and Off TV is only a feature. I'd play a game projected onto Roy 'Chubby' Brown's bare naked arse if it was good enough.

I know that they use their own in-house engine to develop games which is why I only used Unity as a personal example. Double Fine isn't a small time indie so I at least expected the bare minimum of what the Wii U should support. People complained about the lack of off-tv play with The Cave on Miiverse and it will happen again which may lose them some sales (at least mine).

For off-tv it's basically just mirroring the tv image, not rendering both individually. Performance shouldn't be an issue at all, significantly higher technically demanding games manage it all the time.

Excellent news! Will buy once the patch is live, already feeling burned waiting on the (pre-launch) promised 1001 Spikes and X-Type+ patches after buying each.

a) Double Fine isn't developing this, Midnight City is.
b) Off-TV isn't rendering on two screens at once. It's switching between the two.

Double Fine are developing it, Midnight City is a publishing label.

I should have clarified when talking about off-tv play that I was talking about using the GamePad for a 2nd co-op "viewpoint" in the Cave.

I'm tempted to pick it up for Halloween but i wouldn't be able to play it without Off-TV play so i need the patch before i buy it but then it will be after halloween and i'm not sure if it will have the same magic if i miss that. I'd like to play it in the room with my housemates while we watch terrible horror films on the TV :)

Hmmm, i'll wait and see how much it is on the store first.

Is there a release date for NA? Couldn't find one myself.

And my Wii u isn't even plugged into the TV, so hopefully by the time the date is sorted, so is that off-tv issue.

I was hyped for this game this year, but this late release killed it.
I don't have time to play it this week, so this is a next year purchase for me.

Maybe that off-screen play patch will come by then.
Sheesh. Haha.

If it's hitting Europe this Thursday, there's no reason it wouldn't hit NA as well - the country where Halloween is a big Holiday lol.

I will probably grab it if it comes out in NA this week. I've said it before, but the original felt like a Calvin & Hobbes video game. I will keep throwing down for that experience so long as they maintain the same quality level.
