Fighting Games Weekly | Oct 27-Nov 2 | A Lot Of Shit Went Down

Damn, the put-downs in this thread today. :O

So I'm tinkering with Unity at the moment. It's a cool program and I think there's a neat fighting game engine in there waiting to be discovered.

There is already a FG engine in Unity, but it uses hitcircles attached to animation limbs for detection, which is dumb. Hitboxes should have nothing to do with the animation in a 2D game. That's because, functionally, a 2D game using sprites and a 2D game using animations should be identical. The game is really about boxes moving around on a screen, but you understand what the boxes are via the characters.

Anyway, I'm running through the basic 2D tutorial stuff at the moment and the rudiments of a 2D hitbox system are already in there via 2D box colliders.

I'm going to try and make something neat for Christmas-time using sprite rips as a proof of concept. Provided NaNoWriMo doesn't kill me.
One thing to watch out for is how Unity handles I/O. I don't know how true it is now, but I experimented with Unity a couple of years ago and the input handling had enough latency to make it unusable for a fighting game (it ended up being effectively something like 30hz or something awful). They may have addressed that in later builds, but there's no point in doing something that requires the precision of a fighting game with I/O latency like that. I know I've played a couple of music-rhythm games built in Unity and they always felt kind of jank.

Eep! I'll have to keep that in mind.

Make an FG w/ FGW gaffers and their avatars as Jojo-style stands.

You and your friend jerked it in the same room to DOA didn't you?

Woahhhh bro, take it easy there.
We went to separate rooms.

Grew up playing DOA?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ninja please! You used that shit to wank it in your 10 year old self bro!

You acting as if you never did it yourself, pshhh.

Yams pls. hahaha

i couldnt help it...

DOA actually didn't have that stigma until DOAX Volleyball. A lot of people played DOA3 consistently but when Volleyball came out many people didn't look at the series the same way.

it did have a bit of a stigma back in forums with a few people for fanservice, that shower scene in story mode with kasumi....

^ You and Yams gonna have Xmas avatars too?

im gonna rock it with a salt shaker on top of my head made to look like snow.

idk why enzo gets shit on for FGW titles when the bayo 2 OT title belongs in a dumpster

enzo is a scapegoat.

I love your avatar, Yams.

@sixteen-bit, not a bad idea, but maybe after I actually hit the project goals:

1. Design and implement a functional hitbox engine suitable for a fighting game.
2. Design and implement two different characters for users to play as.
3. Design and implement all the random functional crap that actually makes a game rather than just a weird tech demo. (UI, main menu, options, character select, button mapping, round system, etc etc etc.)

I'm probably going to use sprite rips from the SFA series, because rule one when doing work heavy projects in your spare time: cheat as much as possible.

Still don't know if I want to keep my Takamaru avatar as a long term thing or go back to my bread and butter avvy. Either way, I want in on the festive GAF-atars.

Are you deploying on PC or mobile, cause I got a lot of words to say about input interfaces for mobile games

Bayonetta 2 thread is made after this:

I hope the EVO trailer tonight is something substantial. Better not just be a clips of EVO 2014 and then a teaser of the date + hotel venue. But knowing Mr Wizard that's probably exactly what it's going to be.

That's what all the trailers have been. Why would you expect anything more?

Evo trailer will announce all the games, surely

SF4
Marvel 3
Mortal Kombat X
Smash Bros 4
Smash Bros Melee
ayy lmao brawl
Guilty Gear Xrd
Moneyhat Slot #1(Killer Instinct)
Moneyhat Slot #2(Namco game...OR DEAD OR ALIVE TEAM NINJA SPONSER)

Not sure why they can't just make the announcement via Twitter. Or at least just come on the show and make the announcements that way like they do the games line up announcement.

Twitter = less clicks, less embeds on game sites, and overall less mainstream attention.

That's just a guess

i am so out of the loop, i know mr wizard is making an announcement for evo 2015 tonight but is capcom gonna do something too tonight? i saw marvel patch and lost it.

Whats wrong with this way?
Because the trailer is going to be 99% filler of stuff we have seen before and 1% of stuff that is important. Normally in a trailer you show some new stuff so that every second of a trailer is properly utilized to showcase something new.

It's like showing the trailer for the next Avengers movie but having it filled with 99% of Avengers 1 footage and then at the end you announce the date and characters for Avengers 2.

There was a Marvel event today, they announced like 10 movies today.

I heard they had planned to have Spider Man come up and announce the Marvel 3 patch but they decided to save it for E3.

I might be wrong on this but if one tweet is RT'd by 50 people in your timeline it only shows up once. If a video is tweeted by 50 people in your timeline it shows up 50 times.

Same might go for facebook but I don't have account there so I dunno how it works.

Either way I'll watch the trailer so their nefarious plans worked already.

I don't think they are the same, but meh. They are just announcing the venue and date. It's like a teaser trailer, like when they show basically nothing and some inception horns and text and the movie logo. lets go! ;)

The trailer will be the event's date and venue between WUBWUB's

btw who told Mike Ross he plays Makoto?! Holy shit his Mak is bad

Brolylegs just beat Mike 2-1 on Mike's stream, Broly playing with Chun and Mike as Honda. Then they played another match and Mike switched to Makoto and Broly switched to Honda, and Broly won.
