Fighting Games Weekly | Oct 27-Nov 2 | A Lot Of Shit Went Down

Kadey curse plz be real. Think he's playing more cuz they keep asking him to commentate for SF 4, so he wants to know what he's talking about.

He's already at Jchensor level of knowledge.

Very likely that they were out of winner's matches that were notable to run then? I was there but I don't know the exact situation with what matches were in the queue.

I don't think that was the case because they kept that match on hold until they could show it. I'm only joking about the SoCal bias thing anyway.
Not entirely joking

Anyone have link to the Armhouse Youtube page? Its by the guy with "gief" in his name, I just can't remember it at the moment. Thanks.

When did they say anything close to this ever?

You make it sound like melee players don't want a new game to move on to, which is dumb.
I really do believe that there's a subset who actively don't want a new game to move on to, much like many 3S players really never went headlong into SF4.

Maybe it has to be the right game tho...like I'm sure kuroda woulda been all over it if the new game had more of the things he was accustomed to. And I don't think there is anything wrong with sticking with the game you like and trying to help it succeed even if a new one comes out.

BlazBlue is about as doujin/indie as Call of Duty is, yeesh. I would also say that $2 isn't worth it, but at that rate it's probably worth it for the story mode if you're into that sort of thing (and the cards).

indie? nah

but doujin?

. . . of course not, because of production values

but it's so fuckin chuuni i'm not battin an eye that someone calls it doujin shit

I think so too. You know who needs a new game more than SF4 players tho - Marvel players. Maybe they can all switch to Omega mode with animal costumes I dont know.

I'd love for them to run the High Roller tournament for Omega mode that they were considering for Edition Select last year.

To be honest Omega mode is a huge breath of fresh air. Even for me Ultra is stale at the moment which is why I'm probably finding myself playing other games which I normally do not.

It's funny how you're framing this as a bad thing when previously you would stress that SF4's success (and perhaps quality) is due to its similarities to a prior iteration of the franchise.

Yeah there's a subset of people but they clearly don't make a majority of the players. There were many players who wanted to move on to SF4 after SF3, they had their fill of the game.

Smash players were ready to move on to Brawl but that game upset them so greatly that they went back to Melee emphatically. If more people want to move on to Smash 4 than stick to Melee than most would follow (at least for EVO, Melee would still be alive at Apex). People will go where the players are, it's as simple as that.

Going to run the GGPO Vampire Savior Halloween Eve Tournament again this year. It'll be tomorrow, Thursday, October 30th @ 8pm PDT/11pm EDT.

I guess this is a yearly event now since this is the second time I'm running this. :P

BBCT Steam is going to be in an upcoming bundle for $2.

That's within the price range for me to pick up out of my OCD for buying fighting games on the cheap!

Yeah, and given Brawl's issue, that was totally a reasonable move. If Smash 4 fails, moving back to Melee s fine, but you have to let it have the chance to succeed first.

Smash 4 will get its chance just like Brawl did. Brawl was a featured game at EVO for TWO YEARS and was actively played by the Smash community for a good amount of time. There's no reason why Smash 4 wouldn't get similar treatment from the community.

I just got this game. Got a signup link, RWG? Couldn't find it on Challonge.

Wow Harada just posted that Master Cup 7 has 176 teams for a total of 880 competitors. Damn, Japan loves its Tekken, lol.

The problem is that it shouldn't.

The problem with Brawl wasn't that people were giving it a chance, but that it was pushed to the forefront of the community by becoming the premiere event at every tournament (many not even having Melee present) in hopes to rope in newer players. Brawl became the face of the competitive scene and that objectively hurt it for a time. The game was a legitimate slap in the face to veteran community members (today, essentially dismissed as mere "Melee" players when convenient) that spent years to prove to the larger FGC that their game actually housed fighting game elements they valued, and was worth playing competitively.

Then the scene decided to allow a game, whose creator openly admitted that he disliked the competitive Smash scene, and created a Smash game designed to be anti-competitive as a result; become the face of its competitive community. It was fucking dumb.

It took ROM and Genesis in 2009 and Project M to help jumpstart the entire scene again

Ignoring the fact that Nintendo almost literally slammed the door in our faces myriad times in the past and is now essentially pimping the modern Smash scene due to their current market woes: if the scene has any sense of pride left, they'll allow Smash 4 to coexist with Melee, but have Melee maintain its position as the premiere event until the numbers show which game deserves the spot at EVO. The game that is the face of the scene is important and you want to make sure it's the right one.

They had arcade exhibits at EVO before man.

During EVO2011 TTT2 wasn't out yet, hence the exhibition was valid since it was new footage people haven't seeen before. By EVO2015, T7 will have been in Japan/Korea for 5 months with vastly superior nicovideo and Green Arcade stream footage, something very different from the EVO2011 TTT2 arcade exhibition. With all that footage available at the touch of a button it's pretty pointless to have an exhibition of a bunch of American players who haven't even played the game yet when people can watch Japanese/Korean play.

Of course if they're gonna showcase something exclusive for consoles (like EVO2012) then an exhibition is A-OK :)

The problem is that it shouldn't.
New games need to be played in a healthy competitive environment for a considerable period of time before complete abandonment. 1-2 years is the minimum. Otherwise you aren't giving it a solid enough chance to find its stride among the top players (it takes months, even years to get accustomed to a new game even within the same franchise).

I do agree that Smash 4 should co-exist with Melee/Project M etc. but EVO line up has to be decided by January so people can start preparing for the main EVO games. I am not sure a verdict will be reached by then but ideally both should to be included.

Melee's main problem is simply the whole Gamecube/CRT issue. It's a logistics problem at EVO and it's just easier for them to run Smash 4 only. The other problem is if Nintendo will allow Melee to be the main Smash game at big events.

Can't wait for Mastercup 7! The poster image they hired JUNNY to make for the tournament is too good:

LOL @ TTT1 Unknown's wolf appearing

There's nothing "unhealthy" about being a side-game whatsoever. Look at Project M.
Why? It's a fan made mod of Brawl (an existing game and thus not a new game), that's the worst example you can use.

For a new fighting game to reach its maximum potential it has to be played as a major focus starting out. It's not exactly healthy that the first tournament Smash 4 is entered in it's treated as a side game. That's sending a message to the new players that the game they just bought is second rate and they are more likely to quit early in the game's life span. A game being a side game attracts less entrants and exposure... EVO has proven this already.

I feel that you have to assume a game is solid until proven otherwise. Your method is more towards a game is mediocre until proven otherwise.
