Sonic Boom Street Date (and fans' hearts) Broken

Why on earth do they insist on repeatedly stuffing these games full of 2D bullshit? Probably the most wrong-headed trend in modern Sonic games. Move forward, not backward (even if a vocal minority want nothing but the Genesis games in HD).

Heh, yeah. While I don't mind some 2D here and there, it seems like they've got to the stage of inserting it even when it doesn't need it. Like this game does not need 2D sections, it's meant to be a action platformer...

We go two funny gifs out of it in about an hour worth of play. I dunno what you guys are talking about but that sounds like an amazing sonic game to me!

It's a shame. This probably would've looked so much better on more powerful platforms, but it's more developer incompetence than anything.

It's a downgraded, ugly game with stereotypical dialogue, framerate issues, shoehorned in 2D platforming elements, and technical glitches that are unbecoming of a major franchise. This reminds me of when Sony trusted their R&C FFA Port to Tin Giant, and Call of DutyVita to Nihilistic.

This game looks like Sonic Unleashed but it's 100% the parts you don't want to play and none of the occasional fun daytime segments.

I agree with the 2D parts; it breaks my heart every time a Sonic levels suddenly switches to a 2D segment for no reason, it's like they interrupted the fun I was having so that they could maybe save on production costs.

Then again, Boom does have 3D sections eventually (like on the 2nd part), but they are terrible-looking as well.

The Sonic Cycle never ends.

Except for the half decade it did, sure.

I don't mind them, but there's a 2 D companion game so I don't see the point in having 2D sections in this one. At least it's not as baffling as the 2D segments during the modern Sonic stages in Generations.

I'm not sure if it's just that. I think it's probably a case of being rushed out the door as well.

I would kill for a good 2D Sonic game on an HD console, but I agree they shouldn't try it anymore. They're just not good at it. It doesn't appeal to young fans because they don't have nostalgia for it, and it doesn't appeal to old fans because it's not as good as the originals.

Well, I think if they made a full 2D game, and a full 3D game, like what Nintendo do, it would be better. Instead of what they've got at the moment where they're trying to appeal to both, but fail. However, you're probably right in the fact the 2D one would probably not do to well.

Mind you, people seem to be liking the 3DS version which does seem to be mostly 2D.

Well , euh ... as expected it's a platforming game ratchet and clank - style and not the speed action game that i would have enjoyed having ...

Not surprised, not the game i was expecting ...

So they have never actually tried just going back to basics?

Hey look...it looks like any other action platformer but people are hating it cause it is Sonic. I have not see any bad stuff from this feed except for the commenters.

Sonic like Mario, should mean a higher standard. Should.

I just hope the next real Sonic team game is closer to Generations, but 60fps like Lost World.

A little less homing attack focused too.

The 3DS looks as good as it probably could, being on 3DS hardware. Sanzaru should've done the Wii U version instead. At least they have experience with Sly 4 being on PS3.

Is that a question or a sarcastic question?

Sonic 4 tried it, but, I'm not sure that was their best efforts. The 2D sections of Sonic Generations were miles better.

I was serious. The extent of my Sonic knowledge is that there were games on Genesis that most people seem to like, and that I can't think of a legitimately good 3D entry in the series.

Colors and Generations.

Lost World was OK. Adventure series weren't bad, but they went overboard in 2 with extra mechanics.

Still getting it day one, and the OT is still happening.

From what I saw on the first vid, they did co-op from the start, right?

There's two 3D Sonic games that are widely accepted as good 3D Sonic games (arguably three but I'm just going to stick with the two most agree on):

Sonic Colors
Sonic Generations

If you have not played either of these titles, in terms of Sonic games, you've missed out. They're both pretty great and sometimes I feel like Generations is underrated given how much it seems to be forgotten by people who shit on Sonic all the time.

May have been pointed out in the topic, but at 13:00 Metal knocks Amy's hammer out of her hands, then it immediately cuts to her landing with it. I know she can "generate" the hammer, but I'm pretty sure it's just an animation mistake.

The Advance games on GBA are good, the Rush games on DS (including Colours DS) are excellent, Colours is decent, Generations is some of the most fun I've had with the franchise and Lost World is unfocused but it has its moments.

:/

I am just going to assume the game looks that rough due to the Co-Op mode activated (like how in Hyrule Warriors, when you enter co-op mode with one person on GamePad and another using Pro-Controller/Wiimote + Nunchuk combo; the game runs at 30FPS and gets a resolution drop instead of native 720p at 60FPS like in single player mode)....at least I HOPE that is the case :(....

I am waiting for Cobi's playthrough of the game before making judgments of the Wii U game....but the two videos of the first hour really don't leave much to be excited for :(.

It honestly looks like a very rough Jak and Daxter game; that isn't a bad thing (as I love Jak 1 :D) but....for a Sonic tittle, I expect a lot more with the level design. Much of the platforming those videos showed off could of been in any licensed kids platformer...

Shame too, this has a lot of talent behind it despite how underwhelming how the game looks (Naughty Dog + Insomniac + Heavy Iron + Dreamcast/Pixar Animators + High Impact Games + Santa Monica Studios + SuperBot developers......just, BRB is overflowing with talent...and that is NOT apparent with this game :().

Ah right, too used to Sonic hate so you can never tell in these kind of threads lol.

In terms of 3D, Sonic Unleashed's Sonic levels were good, so were Sonic Generations Modern Sonic levels. Sonic Colours was good too, if a bit repetitive in design. Lost Worlds was mostly pretty decent too, but some of the later levels let it down. Rushed perhaps.

I think they have the potential to make good 2D and good 3D games, but, they need to focus their efforts more and give the games the time they need. Stop adding in new gimmicks, focus on just one be it 2D or 3D, and don't rush it out to meet some deadline.

Umm, Hyrule Warriors is always in 30fps I thought?

Assuming that it doesn't run poorly just because of its engine, this is a pretty good showcase of CryEngine being scalable. Disregard this post if it isn't CryEngine.

It's a 30FPS game that runs at around 20FPS in CO OP.

O_O

Damn, guess I was completely wrong there XD! Still, the resolution does take a huge hit when co-op mode is active (720p in single player too 420p in Co-Op), so maybe that is why Sonic Boom U is looking so bad; the game is rendering on two different screens...so it makes sense if a lot takes a hit (shadows, animations, frame-rate).

Then the question is, why did they make Sonic Boom U co-op anyway if it was going to take such a hit on the Wii U's hardware...

I think this is your first question.
