Week of November 10th to 16th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at AnneIFrank!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Right now I play mostly P4U2 and UNiEL as tournament games, but I play a mix of stuff on the side like BBCP, SF4 and poverty stuff like Melty Blood and Project Justice. Project Justice is one of my fave games to play because it's really ridiculous and busted in a unique way. I came for the weird characters and stayed for otg unblockables, air resets, and jab loops. Vanilla P4U is also up there as a fave too, that game has really fun neutral and a strong pace, and it's simple to understand most of the fundamentals in that game.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I actually love simple things that add a lot to games, so things like P4U's air turn make that list. Such a simple thing really adds a lot of options to the game and is basically the basis for my character's (Aigis) entire existence. I also have a thing for reverse beats and free form gatlings, from Melty Blood and UNiEL. Freedom in pressure and confirms is very powerful and definitely not for everybody, but I love the nuts stuff that comes from it.

Least favorite is the same old. XFactor is pretty lame and boring, I prefer the system in say BBCP over that. DWU in USF4 is also fairly underwhelming, it's not the fix for SF4 vortex I was wanting, and with the direction the game headed in it just doesn't sit well with me. There's not a whole lot of individual mechanics I actively dislike, I'm more about big picture type things.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
This will be long and personal, but it's important to me, so yeah. I've played a huge amount of games for as long as I can remember, but I first got a copy of SSF4 just to have a new game for me and a really competitive friend to mess around with. We didn't get too serious, but had fun. Now the personal part. I've always dealt with really troubling depression for a very long time, and somewhere around the start of 2012 I ended up hospitalized through a series of mistakes. When I got out of the hospital, I didn't have a whole lot to look forward to, so I started to grind out SF4 AE online to pass the time and cope. It got me through some long nights. A few months later I went to some tournaments, and then found my local scene. The local FGC basically became a second family to me and honestly helped save me from the depression, and even when I still deal with it today the friends I've made through fighting games are always there for me. The LGBT side of the FGC has been especially kind to me, so that's another special thing around here. The take away here isn't about me, it's about how powerful and important the community and social sides of this whole thing are, so don't take them for granted.

Other genres I play is pretty much anything. I'm always playing something.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Probably Aigis from Persona. She just has a really unique and fun style for a character in an ASW game. No other character gives me that type of mobility and that type of mix up and power, and the specific way she goes about movement and mix up really only works in context of Persona's systems. Plus I love her from the Persona series in general so it's just a dream for me.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I play almost exclusively locally(shout outs to Game Galaxy arcade and Jason Wilson), but I will play online because it's needed with how little strong player XP you can get for the airdasher games. We're spread too thin skill wise and character wise to not use online.

The style I like to play is very heavy rushdown and tends to fall into the high damage or setplay camps. I love having huge amounts of mix up options and I will use all of them that I can. As my friends would say, I like "the cute shit." I also tend to have an emphasis on being in control of neutral game, so characters who can convert well or have high mobility make the cut. Basically, I want to oppress you and make you scared as often as I can. Chars like Aigis, Sakura, Taokaka, C-Satsuki, Merkava etc. are all in my roster.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Biggest strength is easily my willingness to investigate and training mode things, and then to play optimally. I training moded so much in SSF4 AE, that by the end I was timing unblockables using taunt. I do have a healthy balance between training mode/video watching and play time of course. You can't be only a training mode monster.

Not going to expose my weakness, sorry! I got tournaments to go to.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best set of moments come from outside of tournaments ironically enough. I do work hard to personally help people get into the games and scene, so every time somebody thanks me or says how much I helped/inspired them my heart melts. Watching a player I taught from literally 0 fighting game XP to getting wins in tournament recently made my heart explode.

Worst moment was probably my 2nd Final Round. At that point I was playing SF4 well enough to keep up with the higher end players, but I hadn't got a wrangle on my nerves yet and completely flopped in tournament. Was a big wake up call to strengthen myself mentally, it's basically the biggest thing there is in competition and I hadn't worked on it yet.
What do you want from future fighting games?
Creative and fun games! I don't have anything specific to say, I'm just always very excited to try out new games, no matter what sub genre they fall under.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
CurlyW
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax comes out on Thursday and I'm pretty excited for it. Also Guilty Gear Xrd is the ASW megaton this year, so I'm into that too.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or (preferably) PM me to let me know.

omg! i knew enzo would pick the wrong title yet again.

Oh, that title is all kinds of mean!
wow enzo's terrible titles even managed to summon bishop. enzo super arcade will still be holding the events on wed, thurs, sunday so they aren't really on hiatus. maybe put something in there about events being on the superdojo twitch channel.

Don't worry Enzo. You have the blessing of the Elder Frauds

Your position is safe for now

lol nice banner, but who is the 3rd guy in the top row?
John Nelson, TO of ReveLAtions (who never paid out as he was supposed to, and got away with it multiple times).

minus stopped working for me for some reason; no idea why
Happens to me too sometimes and I start freaking out. Minus in general is pretty shitty now, sometimes they delete old files with no rhyme or reason, or change their extensions.

KFC or Popeyes is the first question on the Fraud Litmus test

It's also the only question

KFC didn't kill Guilty Gear in the US

They selling people buckets of grilled chicken tho

Xrd soon- I hope it actually has legs. The one game to unite the FGC!

Also, ya'll can't downplay KFC until you've tried the limited edition yuzu flavored stuff in Japan. Fried chicken plus a hint of citrus goodness is too godlike.

You kept that in, enzo? Ahahahaha, nice.

Was waiting for a new thread to share this cool new indie fighting Kickstarter I saw earlier today: Pocket Rumble.

It's a Pocket Fighters-inspired fighting game that is still very much competitive, but emphasizes strategy over execution. All the special moves are done via simple combined button presses, you can queue your next move during an attack animation so that you don't need to be frame-perfect to pull off a combo. They also manage to have a really diverse starting cast with this control scheme, all touching on iconic fighting game archetypes.

This is the kind of fighting game I've wanted for a long time. Something that isn't as simple as Divekick, but still loosens the barrier for people interested in the genre that are too intimidated by the unforgiving path to being viable.

Oh and speaking of Divekick, Kick and other indie game characters cameo as secret arcade mode bosses. The fencer from Nidhogg and Candyman from Lethal League are a couple of the more relevant examples.

I'm a little tired of the whole faux 8-bit aesthetic that seems to litter every other indie game these days, but I still find this really exciting. I'll probably make a thread for it later, unless someone good at making threads would rather do it.

I hate you Enzo! Viscant is not a fraud!

BOOO. BOOOOO!

Enzo too impure to understand the greatness of Viscant.

I'm pretty sure this already had a KS, got roasted when it first got posted in FGW, and failed to meet its funding goal. Don't know what they're changing about it this time.

Wow, this is looking really impressive and comprehensive. Now that's how you do a Kickstarter pitch.

Thread is titled "game, blouses" in my heart.

I like the pocket fighters aesthetic. looks almost exactly like those snk games on neo geo pocket.
