The Game Awards (Dec 5): VGAs replacement [funded by] Keighley, game world premiers

I'm rather surprised to see Nintendo participating in this, but I guess I shouldn't be since the whole infamous Cranky Kong reveal at VGX last year (which I still believe was a legitimately cool announcement, but Nintendo fans can raise hype like no other).

Maybe Reggie will wear a Metroid pin this year, to go with his Samus from last year...

...And then show off some new Pikmin 3 DLC!

The meltdowns would be glorious...even if I'd be a casualty.

Hmmm... sounds interesting. Might be worth watching if we can get confirmation Keighley and any of the actors/writers involved with the VGX/A won't be in there.
XD

It seems Keighley is a force to be reckoned.

No problems from me, like most of the stuff he's been involved with. Specially the interviews with game creators.

Wow, what a crazy turnaround. I was unhappy about the VGX, but this sounds better.

Geoff, I hope you guys will rock it. Looking forward to it!

Hi guys - Thanks for the interest. Happy to answer questions about the show here on GAF.

How does the Game Advisory Board work? Will they pile together a list of games they recommend for awards or will they be responsible for testing our a certain amount of games and offering their picks based on that?

Why is the board so limited in its current iteration? Very few Japanese developers, none from Europe, nor any type of indie developer input. Is that something looking to expand upon or work towards in the future?

I'll watch it but an award show where the focal point is "entertainment" and "100 billion dollar industry" instead of being about the artistic value and contributions of the medium is not something I'm particularly interested in.

It's going to be a publicity stun and it would be cool to see some new games but this contributes very little to the medium and it's just another way to cater to the AAA industry and the big money makers.

If its similar to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards it could be pretty cool. People from within the industry voting on the best games. With all the manufacturers and some of the others involved we can HOPE that it won't be about money, but recognizing high achievement in game making.

Keighley has lined up an impressive roster of supporters, who serve on the show’s advisory board, including Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America; Yves Guillemot, CEO, Ubisoft; Hideo Kojima, president, Kojima Prods; Shawn Layden, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America; Peter Moore, chief operating officer, Electronic Arts; Xbox chief Phil Spencer; Martin Tremblay, president, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment; Rockstar Games and Valve.

a couple points.

Showcasing "video games" is great. I can't wait to see new trailers and developers getting the love they deserve... But I fail to see how this will be any way different from prior game awards shows. And award shows in general are terrible, I never watch them because the format never changes; always in a big arena/stadium/hall, hosted by someone everyone loves/hates, and musical guests, lets not forget the musical guests. I actually liked that fact that last year's VGX had the balls to switch it up, even though it didn't work. I'll watch this just for the exclusives. Keep up the good work Keighley.

Steam Sales tied to awards shows is a smart thing to do. I'm not sure if I can call myself excited but I'll watch it for sure.

“PlayStation looks forward to seeing our fans and celebrating with them both at The Game Awards and The PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas this December,” said Shawn Layden, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “For those who can’t join us in person, we will be livestreaming the weekend on PlayStation Network.”

Lets hope this includes the panels.

No Joel McHale no watch.

The only interesting thing about those awards last year was watching everyone from this PR controlled industry squirm while Joel laid into them.

As awful as VGX was, at least it premiered No Man's Sky for us. Which was an awesome out of left field moment. But yeah, this sounds like it has the right idea with the industry itself coming together for it's own show.

Who is voting for the awards? What are the rules? Who will be presenting the show? Are the musical presentations directly related to games?

Alrighty then.

Is this a black-tie event with suits and the whole shebang?
Who is picking the recipients of the awards?
How long has then been in the making?
This sounds like what you've always wanted.

Answers:

1.) I don't think it will be black tie.

2.) The awards will be selected by a combination of the press and fans. More details will be announced in the coming weeks about that.

3.) Well I've been working on this for a while now. It actually started in earnest after Last of Us: One Night Live. Neil turned to me as we walked off stage and said, "You should make the awards feel like that." It's been a few months of aligning with all the publishers and platforms, and I'm truly honored they have all put competition aside to support the show.

4.) Yes, I'm very excited about what we're building. Tight timeline this year, but I'm excited by what is coming together.

Also, how can one whole development house and one whole publishing house be on a board? Who specifically (if anyone) from from those companies gets to make any kind of decision? Are those companies funding the award show?

What are you doing to make sure that this time it doesnt end up being embarrassing for the industry more than a "celebration" of it?

Hey guys -- This morning I'm happy to announce The Game Awards 2014, which will be taking place on Friday, December 5 in Las Vegas. This is a new awards show I'm building for the industry from the ground up, and I look forward to having a direct conversation with you guys about it over the next month.

Just...be respectful. The awards are what they are, and the reveals are cool but after the last few months of horrifying bullshit I don't think I could bare to see a show which claims to represent the industry trot out teabagging soldiers and semi-adversarial comedians.

I'll set my expectations low, but I can't see how this can possibly be worse than last year's VGX since it's at least endorsed by the big 3.

YESSSSS.

Can only go up I guess. I'm actually intrigued considering the console holders are involved and it will be streaming on all consoles. I'm far less worried about ethics concerns if it's a show voted on and involving the devs and publishers themselves. It's a giant circlejerk just like the Oscars and many other awards shows. It's more sad that it's going to have "reveals." Just another way that video games can't get away from commercialism.
