Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 10-16 | Frauds Among Us

Mortal Kombat motions would work great on keyboard. Hopefully WB and NRS will focus more on the PC version this time around.

The fact that they're doing a same-day release is a great first step. It gives me some confidence.

Also? PC has free fucking multiplayer.

And this is why I'm now PC or bust when it comes to fighting games. Even if this means no VF6 for me, I refuse to pay money for an online junk fee.

So I play some fighting games but I don't really participate all that much in the FGC, can anyone explain something to me that seems stupid about the FGC?

Why does it seem that everyone hates fighting games being called an eSport and seems to be vehemently against any sort of organization that comes with eSports? It just seems really stupid to me since it could only be a good thing to have the scene better organized and with more exposure.

It just seems really weird to me.

esports are viewed as fake, anti-hype, white, and bad for the community as a whole. esports are seen as generally closing out the possibility of the everyman competing with closed invite only tourneys, and unstable because most esport scenes collapse entirely when the money dries up.

The idea is e-sports are professional and we'd lose the pop offs, shit talk, blow ups and overall competitive spirit.

because people are afraid of esports restricting what makes the fgc 'fgc'.
i think the biggest concern is it would lead to the downfall of grassroots events which is the core foundation of the fgc. luckily, capcom is smart enough to realise that when they started capcom pro tour by integrating these events into their tour.

that and bullshit structures and taking the focus away from the players who attends tournaments in person and from the games themselves to put too much emphasis on the spectator side of things

comes with unnecessarily bloated events too

I don't think "competitive" spirit is the appropriate word (if there's no competition in esports then what the fuck are they doing). Grassroots spirit is more fitting.

The only other competitive scene I follow is Hearthstone, and none of the arguments made so far as negatives of eSports apply to it really. Like "smack talk" is even rated by the commentators, lol

Also, I just realized Xrd getting localized means Xrd is getting /localized/. And that means different VA. Which could mean a different cry for Millia while she's getting hit. Please let it be better

Hearthstone's main tournament is Blizzard-sponsored like the MTG or Capcom PT. MLG (who are in the red as a company and will likely eventually bankrupt) and other companies like them who essentially market the games for 3rd parties are what people are (justly) worried about.

Possibly. But even being associated with esports tars it at this point. And rating smack talk? Sounds really fake.

Speaking of which, XRD is coming soon right?.

It's a really stupid sounding name.

1,000 times this.

One other thing about esports. They have to run ads. Lots of them. So there is SO MUCH DOWNTIME. Add that up with unnecessary commentator impressions and waiting time. It's pretty much unwatchable, and for the players involved in the events It's very frustrating too.

The downtime is fine when the game takes minimum 40 minutes to play through (i.e. LoL, Dota2). It just doesn't work when applied to running a tournament for fighting games.

Which is ironic because EVO had so much down time this year. It was pathetic.

I don't see how it could, people have adblock for no ads or they watch the videos together as a group, its the same concept, just in a different setting. Also, I mentioned adblock since this synctube might disable ads but I doubt that's the case. Fun times will be had now, FGC-chat can be with you whenever you want it to be!

It would actually be pretty awesome if we held a thing like this weekly and just chatted amongst ourselves during the matches. Would love to see Dahbomb's reactions during a hype marvel match.
Synchtube, last I heard from Hito (RIP), is a tricky thing on GAF. The MLP thread was using it regularly to watch episodes, and when he asked about it, he said they needed to put a stop to mentioning it in the thread since those episodes weren't legally able to be watched via Synchtube (the episodes put up that they were watching weren't put up by Hasbro essentially).

Doesn't stop people from watching Level Up in the past though...

We can just have a dorito's gate when grand finals in happening and have both players sit in a throne made out of mountain dew bottles and have coats made out of dorito bags.

So we can essentially watch teamspooky videos and cross counter ones but not if its uploaded by the actual content provider. Makes a lot of sense, thanks beef.

It's just so sterile and the whoever's made this culture 1:1 trying to imitate sports, players are on some pedestal/ivory tower and it's a select few instead of the open bracket nature of FGC events. To me it just looks like totally different philosophies; eSports = watch us, FGC = play with us.

I think we're doing fine since both our league/invite events and open tournaments draw so much viewers and interest.

It doesn't feel forced or anything like that as it's something that originated from the players and the audience, and the popular commentators are players themselves. Ultimately, it is more timid than some of the stuff we get in the FGC though, lol

I guess the grassroots thing I can sort of understand, but it's not games like League or DotA don't have amateur tournements or something. It seems like people misinterpreting things.

It isn't as big with NA and EU players, but the Korean LoL scene is pretty known for it's trash talk, heck, Imp from Samsung Galaxy White, the current world champions, is almost known more for his trash talk than his play. It's not like eSports means no trash talk. Okay, maybe Aris would probably be out of a job if he hasn't changed since the Cross Assault fiasco, it's not like that wouldn't exist in an eSports environment.

Even that's tricky cause it costs views :v We never watch those channels anyways though. Mostly anime and old stuff.

The MLG events for MK9 were great, some of the best tournaments for that game, and they never had a problem with trash talk and hype. I mean Arturo worked there and loved it. This last MLG for Injustice was absolutely awful though, but that was more of a problem running it than them being too sterile and boring.

I won't speak for the community or anyone else, because really who am I to speak with any authority on how anyone involved in watching, playing, or organizing fighting games feels? So I'll just tell you how I personally feel.

I am not against "any sort of organization" that wants to make a "proper" league or more "professional" tournaments. In fact something like that is the route I hope that the EVO organizers eventually take (and what I think they're sort of slowly moving to already).

Then again, that depends on how they decide to go about things. Are they planning on completely sterilizing the production and taking themselves completely seriously? I don't know if I want that. I can just go watch Starcraft or Dota if that's what I'm looking for.

Also, what would that mean for me as no-name scrub who every now and then likes going to events to try and not go 0-2?
I haven't succeeded yet, if you were wondering.
What happens when events only want the biggest and best names? Well, I only really go to one or two of the bigger events a year, so I would probably be fine as long as it doesn't consume the small local events. I'm rambling now, sorry.

As for "eSports": it's a really dumb name. One that to me sounds like something birthed in a boardroom full of people who only care about squeezing as much money out of advertisers as they can. Why the obsession with wanting to be seen as something legitimate by other people when we already know it is?

Just call it competitive gaming. That's what it is. We don't need to ride on the coattails of professional sports.

I never thought about it like this. It's totally true. I never feel compelled to go attend one of their big events when watching some of the tournament streams. Fighting games though, Spooky's streams are the reason I started wanting to seek out the local community here. It looked like fun.

You know what's competitive? Sports.

You know why it's called eSports? Stands for electronic
No shit

Actually seeing people get upset over the word is pretty childish and hilarious to me xD

That seems like bullshit to me, since a lot of the FGC seems to have the mindset of "if you don't know how to play, then fucking don't." It took me years before I actually knew what a dragon punch was and how to do it, I just avoided anything that used that motion. And if I tried to ask anywhere I would just get flamed as an idiot. Maybe people are more open now, but I have trouble believing it. The fact that the scene isn't regulated at all just makes atmosphere worse with terrible comments that can and surely have made people not want to be involved.

Thinking that the FGC means "play with us" is just delusional. Fighting games, maybe, but the FGC is way less inviting than MOBA and RTS communities, at least from personal experiences. Only reason I posted here was because this is one of the first FGC threads or other sort of community things that has not seemed like complete shit, to be expected from something on GAF. Have I only had shitty experiences in real life and the internet? Who knows, but the fact that I have had many shitty experiences, and I'm a white guy so it's not like it's even bigotry or something, makes me think it's a bigger problem.

I'll agree with that the name is stupid, but that isn't a reason to not want organization. I know that's not what you're saying, at least it doesn't seem that way, but most people seem to be opposed more to the concept of eSports for some reason.

Pretty much.

The word itself doesn't really offend me at this point

but seeing your avatar does kappa

Edit:

Your experience is really odd, I was self-taught watching shinakuma videos back in the day and playing online by myself and when I started playing actual pro's they taught me from the ground up what I was doing wrong when I was really into street fighter at the time. maybe you just unfortunate to meet a bunch of jerks.

Tbh your experience is the first time i've heard of something like that. Strange.

People will tell you basic stuff like that no problem in person if you're new and ask.
Online though? People have spent so much time filling wikis and threads, you're expected to read up resources before you ask anything obviously.

Not really seeing how regulation stops terrible comments either. Or how anything the FGc can throw at you can be worse than MOBA hell.

Pretty much.

I'm sorry your experience was like that while mine was random people telling me their address or when locals were and trying to get me to show up.

Or people asking me if I know how to play and then explaining it to me if I don't at the locals.

My online experience with the FGC was pretty great when I joined soulcalibur.com during SC2 and SRK to check out the 3rd Strike forum.

SF4 online communities were night and day in comparison. Too many unhelpful scrubs coming out the woodwork.

The only memory I have of my local scene was getting 32 wins in Tekken 5 with Wang then getting threatened to get stabbed before everyone else around me beat the shit out of the guy. *shrug*

Its probably not all that uncommon. Like it takes a fair amount of effort to teach an absolute beginner how to play a fighting game, and you kinda need a decent amount of self motivation to get good, and there are like a million tutorials and videos out there for people who go looking for them. Like if someone's asking for tips getting started, a lot of people wouldn't know where to begin explaining, and they probably use a lot of terminology that a beginner wouldn't understand. All of that combined with catching someone in a bad mood or whatever, can probably seem very unwelcoming. Its easier than its ever been to get jnto fighting games but it could still be better.

I've had that regularly happen to me. Whether it be Halo, COD, Mario Kart, Marvel, people would get hella salty and I had to get off the system since I was winning too much. Granted I didn't show mercy.

Maybe he's just asking in the wrong forums. The SRK newbie section is pretty good about answering those questions. Here is okay too.

Gamefaqs, probably horrible.
